About the journal
The expanded, bimonthly Seismological Research Letters serves as a general forum for informal communication among seismologists, as well as between seismologists and those nonspecialists interested in seismology and related disciplines. The contents of SRL include contributed articles on topics of broad seismological interest, opinion pieces on current seismological topics, News and Notes about seismology in the U.S. and internationally, Transitions notes about seismologists, special earthquake reports, and letters to the editor.
"The Electronic Seismologist" is one of SRL's most popular columns. Many readers find its information on data exchange, the World Wide Web, and bulletin boards containing seismological information necessary reading. "EduQuakes" aims to provide a forum for the ongoing educational mission of the Seismological Society.
SRL prides itself on its ability to disseminate information quickly. For example, articles with preliminary reports about recent earthquakes of major public interest have appeared in as little as two months after the occurrences of the events. In summary, SRL is an excellent tool for keeping current on developments in earthquake seismology.
Instructions to Authors
Seismological Research Letters--Submissions
Seismological Research Letters (SRL) is a journal containing articles and items of broad appeal on topics in seismology and earthquake engineering. Articles submitted to SRL should be informational in nature and should be of current interest to a cross-section of the SSA membership. Articles expressing some particular view about seismology or seismological research will also be accepted. Articles that contain original research results should be submitted to the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA). News/notes, special reports on particular earthquakes, seismic network summaries, information on computer hardware or software pertinent to seismology, seismological equipment information, book reviews, and letters to the editor are also solicited for publication in SRL.
Articles should not exceed 20 pages of double-spaced text (excluding figures) unless approved by the editor. Supplemental electronic supplements can now be considered for SRL; the electronic supplement policy is posted at esupps.html.
Submissions are encouraged via e-mail or computer disk in Macintosh or IBM formats. Please also send three printed copies of submitted articles. All submissions should be sent to the editor: Sue Hough, USGS, 525 S. Wilson Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91106, USA; telephone (626) 583-7224; fax (626) 583-7827, e-mail hough@gps.caltech.edu.
Submissions to the ES-SSA Section of SRL
The ES-SSA section of SRL is devoted to the seismology of continental interiors. Articles pertaining to eastern North American earthquakes, intraplate seismotectonics, and earthquake engineering are particularly encouraged. Three copies of articles for this section should be sent to the ES-SSA editor: Martin C. Chapman, Department of Geological Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic & State University, 4044 Derring Hall, Blacksburg, VA 24061; telephone (540) 231-5036, e-mail mcc@vt.edu. Appropriate review articles and tutorials are encouraged, as well as news and notes pertaining to the Eastern Section of SSA. Referees are sought on all ES-SSA papers exceeding four published pages in length. Page charges for articles in the ES-SSA section are $25 for each printed page. The editor may allow exceptions to the page charges under certain circumstances.
Color Charges in SRL
The rates for color in SRL are: First page: $1,050 Second page: $600 Each additional page: $90 Color separation per page: $155
Submission of Artwork in Electronic Form
Electronic submission of artwork with articles is encouraged. We prefer the following file formats: TIFF native Adobe Photoshop files JPEG (as long as compression is avoided or minimized) GIF Other formats often work too. Check with us if you're not sure.
For color images, use CMYK color mapping instead of RGB. (CMYK often looks less bright than RGB, but since it will be printed using CMYK, that is a better representation of what it will look like in the journal.) Color scans should be made at 300 dpi or greater resolution.
Grayscale and halftone images should be 3% highlights and 85% shadows.
For photos that include a few arrows and legends, you may make a combination file, but also include the original photo in one of the above formats. That way, if there is trouble with the combination file, we can use our software to recreate the legends and arrows.
Guidelines for Line Art and Combination Files:
When possible, use PostScript fonts. The journal is set in Helvetica and Adobe Garamond (and their stylistic variations), but Times is also fine. The best file formats by far are: native Adobe Illustrator files EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) PS (plain PostScript, including PostScript "job" or "printer" files) Adobe Acrobat PDF files
Formats that sometimes work but which frequently get corrupted in minor to major ways are PICT, CorelDraw, and figures pasted into a Microsoft Word document. Older versions of Word seem to behave better. Again, for color work use a CMYK color model when possible. For black and white work, avoid color (it will appear gray). Instead use solid black and gray scales between 20% and 70%. (Shades outside this range can be used, but be aware that shades darker than 70% may appear black, especially when used in thin lines, and shades lighter than 20% fade on printing and may not be easily visible.)
Most graphics software will produce usable PostScript files if you select a PostScript printer driver (whether or not you have a PostScript printer) and print a file to disk. These files can be quite large, however. CorelDraw produces fairly unreliable PostScript, especially when raster-image files are included.
