About the journal

 Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology focuses on (a) basic research, (b) the integration of basic and applied research, and (c) improved practice in the field of neuropsychology. The primary function of Neuropsychology is to publish original, empirical research on the relation between brain and human cognitive, emotional, and behavioral function. Sought are submissions of human experimental, cognitive, and behavioral research with implications for neuropsychological theory and practice. Articles that increase understanding of neuropsychological functions in both normal and disordered states and across the lifespan are encouraged. Applied, clinical research that will stimulate systematic experimental, cognitive, and behavioral investigations as well as improve the effectiveness, range, and depth of application is germane. Neuropsychology seeks to be the vehicle for the best research and ideas in the field.

Instructions to Authors

All new and revised manuscripts (including tables and figures) must be submitted electronically in rich text format (RTF) via the manuscript submission portal.

In addition to addresses and phone numbers, authors should supply electronic mail addresses and fax numbers, if available, for potential use by the editorial office and later by the production office. Authors should keep a copy of their manuscript to guard against loss. Authors with questions concerning manuscript submission should address these directly to:

Neuropsychology is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research articles. A detailed description of the editorial coverage policy appears on the inside of the front cover of each issue.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Formatting instructions (all copy must be double-spaced with wide margins) and detailed instructions on preparing abstracts, tables, figures, references, and abbreviations and metrics appear in the Publication Manual. Also, all manuscripts are copyedited for bias-free language (see chap. 2 of the Publication Manual).

Abstracts

All manuscripts must include an abstract that contains a maximum of 120 words typed on a separate page.

Tables

Each table should be submitted with the manuscript file. Each should start on a separate page and must be numbered and labeled with an appropriate title. All tables must be self-explanatory.

Figures

Any figures should be included in the file that is submitted. For production of accepted manuscripts, the APA office must receive high-quality prints, which must not exceed 8.5 x 11 in. (21.5 x 28 cm) in size; photocopies, transparencies, slides, and negatives are not acceptable. All figures must be numbered and labeled with the first author's name. All parts of multiple-part figures must appear on the same page. Original color figures can be printed in color at the editor's discretion and provided the author agrees to pay half of the associated production costs; an estimate of these costs is available from the APA production office on request. Please supply three glossy color positive prints. Alternatively, a figure may be printed in black at no cost but published in color online (provide a CMYK file). For further information about graphics files, see pp.176¨C201 of the Publication Manual

References

References should be cited in text as follows: "The results replicated those of a previous study (Knoth & Mair, 1991)," or "The procedure was a modification of Krettek and Price's (1989) and Smith et al.'s (1977) . . . ." Multiple references should be cited in alphabetical order: "Earlier investigations (Abbott, 1988; Hunt & Aggleton, 1983; Winocur, 1985) . . . ." Each listed reference should be cited in text, and each text citation should be listed alphabetically in the reference section. The following examples illustrate the style to be used for a journal article, a book, and a chapter in a book, respectively:

Jernigan, T. L., & Ostergaard, A. L. (1993). Word priming and recognition memory are both affected by mesial temporal lobe damage. Neuropsychology, 7, 14¨C26.

Francis, W. N., & Kucera, H. (1982). Frequency analysis of English usage: Lexicon and grammar. Boston: Houghton Mifflin.

Jacoby, L. L. (1984). Incidental versus intentional retrieval: Remembering and awareness as separate issues. In L. R. Squire & N. Butters (Eds.), Neuropsychology of memory (pp. 145¨C156). New York: Guilford Press.

Abbreviations and Metrics

Nonstandard abbreviations should be introduced by placing the abbreviation in parentheses after the first occurrence of the term being abbreviated in both the abstract and the text. The metric system should be followed for all volumes, lengths, weights, and so on. Temperatures should be expressed in degrees Celsius (centigrade). Units should conform to the International System of Units (SI; see the Publication Manual).

PUBLICATION POLICY

Authors are required to obtain and provide to APA all necessary permissions to reproduce any copyrighted work, including, for example, test instruments and other test materials or portions thereof.

APA policy prohibits an author from submitting the same manuscript for concurrent consideration by two or more publications. In addition, it is a violation of APA Ethical Principles to publish "as original data, data that have been previously published" (Standard 8.13). Because this journal is a primary journal that publishes original material only, APA policy prohibits as well publication of any manuscript that has already been published in whole or substantial part elsewhere. Authors have an obligation to consult journal editors concerning prior publication of any data upon which their article depends.

In addition, APA Ethical Principles specify that "after research results are published, psychologists do not withhold the data on which their conclusions are based from other competent professionals who seek to verify the substantive claims through reanalysis and who intend to use such data only for that purpose, provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and unless legal rights concerning proprietary data preclude their release" (Standard 8.14). APA expects authors submitting to this journal to adhere to these standards. Specifically, authors of manuscripts submitted to APA journals are expected to have available their data throughout the editorial review process and for at least 5 years after the date of publication.

Authors will be required to state in writing that they have complied with APA ethical standards in the treatment of their sample, human or animal, or to describe the details of treatment. A copy of the APA Ethical Principles may be obtained electronically or by writing the APA Ethics Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242.

REVISIONS

Revised manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the Manuscript Submission Portal (http://www.apa.org/journals/neu/submission.html) and must include a cover letter indicating how the author(s) have responded to the prior critiques. Manuscripts need not be accompanied by a copy of the original version.

MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTANCE

Upon acceptance of their manuscript for publication, authors are expected to provide permissions, signed and dated copyright release and ethical compliance forms, and an electronic version of their revised manuscript on diskette.

Permissions

If any figure or table (or part or adaptation thereof) or more than a few lines of text from previously published material are included in a manuscript, the author must obtain written permission for re-publication from the copyright holder and forward a copy to the APA Journals Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242.

Disclosure of Interests

APA requires authors to reveal any possible conflict of interest in the conduct and reporting of research (e.g., financial interests in a test procedure, funding by pharmaceutical companies for drug research).

Copyright

Under copyright law, the transfer of copyright from author to publisher must be completed before any article can be published in Neuropsychology. The transfer of copyright enables the publisher to assure maximum dissemination of the author's work. APA Publication Rights forms are sent to all authors prior to acceptance and must be signed and returned to the Editor's office immediately. U.S. government employees must sign the section of the form stating exemption from copyright laws. Alterations to or substitutions for the form are not acceptable. All authors must sign this form to verify authorship.

PROOFS AND REPRINTS

All proofs must be corrected and returned to the APA Journals Office within 48 hours of receipt. Authors outside the United States are encouraged to use a rapid and reliable mailing service. Only correction of typographical errors will be permitted; the author will be charged for additional alterations to the text at the proof stage.

With the proofs will be a form providing the author with the opportunity to order reprints. Direct inquiries to the APA Journals Office can be made at 202-336-5540; fax 202-336-5549.
