About the journal

The Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry (JPOC), together with its electronic enhancement EPOC, provides an international forum for the rapid publication of original scientific papers and electronic material dealing with physical organic chemistry in its broadest sense. As such, it is aimed at scientists working in this field, not only in chemistry itself, but also in biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, materials and polymer science, and in other areas of research in which the approaches used in physical organic chemistry are now applied.

JPOC is published monthly as a classical journal, presenting all material that can be published in printed form. Additional electronic material-color images, dynamic chemical structures, videos, simulations-and extensive supplementary material are published in EPOC.

The Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry will devote particular attention to the following fields: Organic chemistry; Bio-organic chemistry; Organometallic chemistry; Theoretical chemistry; Catalytic chemistry; Photochemistry; Supramolecular chemistry. Among the topics covered within the fields will be: Reaction mechanisms; Reactive intermediates; Combinational stategies; Novel structures; Spectroscopy; Chemistry at interfaces; Stereochemistry; Conformational analysis; Quantum chemical studies; Structure-reactivity relationships; Solvent, isotope and solid-state effects; Long-lived charged, sextet or open-shell species; Magnetic, non-linear optical and conducting molecules; Molecular recognition.

Instructions to Authors

Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit four copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to the nearest Editor listed in the current issue. However, if you wish to submit a paper enhanced with electronic or supplementary material for publication in EPOC, then submit your paper to Prof. Christopher J. Cramer or Prof. Dr Michael Schmittel (guidelines for this case can be found on the EPOC website). The Journal publishes Full Papers, Review Commentaries and Rapid Communications.

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Electronic Submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the Journal. We are able to use files produced by most word processing packages, but prefer them in Word or WordPerfect format.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Electronic Enhancement/Supplementary Material. The Electronic Supplement to the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry (EPOC) is available for the publication of data that are (i) not amenable to presentation in a traditional print format, (ii) of interest primarily to specialists and do not require Journal page space, or (iii) particularly useful to the community in electronic (downloadable) form. The EPOC website is located at http://www.wiley.com/epoc/ and authors are encouraged to examine the website for submission instructions or to contact one of the EPOC Editors to discuss the content of their submission.

Manuscript style. The language of the Journal is English. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3 cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

  • The title page must list the full title, a short title of up to 70 characters and the names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply an abstract of up to 300 words for all articles, except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper.
  • Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.

Table of Contents Entries. From January 2002 (Volume 15) the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry has adopted a graphical style for the table of contents. Authors must submit the text and one figure (diagram, chemical figure or equation)for this abstract with the manuscript, on a separate piece of paper, as well as an electronic version of the abstract's text together with that of the manuscript on a diskette. The table of contents entry should include the paper title and the author's names (with the corresponding author indicated by an asterisk), and should contain the figure and no more than 80 words or 3 sentences of text summarising the key findings presented in the paper. Summarising text and figure should fit into a box no more than 6.0cm high and 10.5cm long.

Review Commentaries. The Editors welcome short reviews of a personal or critical nature. Comprehensive reviews are not within the scope of this Journal. Review commentaries should present a critical summary of a specific area of research. Prior consultation with the Editor-in-Chief or one of the Editors is advised.

Rapid Communications. These are short manuscripts whose novelty and significance justify rapid publication. The author should inform the Editor why priority is warranted. In style and presentation they should conform to that laid down for research papers (including an abstract), but length should be restricted to a maximum of two journal pages, i.e. approximately eight pages of typed manuscript.

Nomenclature. Authors shall conform to nomenclature symbols and abbreviations adopted by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) for chemical terminology. Unusual symbols should be defined in the margin. For questions of style, usage, and punctuation, refer to The Chicago Manual of Style, which will be the final authority.

Crystallographic Data. Previous unpublished x-ray data should be submitted to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre prior to submission to this Journal or should be documented by appropriate accompanying material. In either event, all submissions should be accompanied by four hardcopies of crystal data, data collection parameters, a description of the structure solution and refinement, an ORTEP plot, and the following tables: atomic coordinates (including hydrogen atoms even if in calculated positions), anisotropic temperature factors, bond distances, bond lengths, relevant dihedral angles, and important intermolecular distances. Alternatively, this information may be supplied in electronic form (as an email attachment, as ftp, or on diskette), but ORTEP hardcopies are required under any circumstance. Authors may also include this information as a file for the Electronic Supplement to the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry (EPOC), particularly files containing the atomic coordinates and the ORTEP plots.

Reference style. References should be cited by superior numbers and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. Authors should cite available published work. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include them in the references list. References should be listed in the following style:

  1. Sandberg KA, Shultz DA. J. Phys. Org. Chem. 1998; 11: 819-824.
  2. Bassindale AR Taylor PG. In The Chemistry of Organic Silicon Compounds, Patai S, Rappoport Z (eds), Wiley: New York, 1989; 893-963

Illustrations. If not submitted electronically, each illustration must be supplied on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name, figure number and orientation on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Use hatching, not tints; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible in case of reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing.

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the Journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the Journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Chemical structures. Chemical structures should be prepared in either 83 mm (one column) or 175 mm (two column) widths. However, the one-column format should be used whenever possible as this allows greater flexibility in the layout of the manuscript. Chemical structures should be supplied at the same size as the intended printed version (so no enlargement or reduction is required).

For drawings prepared with ChemDraw please use the following settings:

Drawing settings Text settings
chain angle 120¡ã font Helvetica
bond spacing 18% of length size 8 pt
fixed length 14.4 pt
bond width 2 pt Preferances
line width 0.6 pt units points
margin width 1.6 pt tolerances 3 pixels
hash spacing 2.5 pt

Authors using different structural drawing programs should choose settings consistent with those above. Compound numbers should be bold, but not atom labels or captions.

Copyright. In order to enable the Journal to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the Journal, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) is published regularly in the Journal. Copies may also be obtained from the Journal Editors or the Publisher.

Further Information. Typeset proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. There is no page charge to authors.

Authors in Japan. Wiley-Japan can provide authors in Japan with a list of recommended services to check and improve the English of their papers before submission. Please contact Masayo Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by e-mail (editorial@wiley.co.jp) or fax (03 3556 9763) for more information, stating which journal you are submitting to.
