About the journal
For industrial chemists and chemical engineers, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research is the reliable and current source of new fundamental research, design methods, process design and development, and product research and development.
This state-of-the art journal contains original studies in the areas of:
Applied Chemistry
Kinetics, Catalysis, and Reaction Engineering Materials and Interfaces
Process Design and Control Separations
General Research
Focusing on new areas of science and technology, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research features Commentary, which presents critical and selective views on key issues by leaders in the field. Recent Festschrifts have been published to honor the work of James M. Douglas (Volume 41, Issue 16), John A. Quinn (Volume 41, Issue 3), and in memory of Hasan Orbey (Volume 41, No. 5). Timely review articles, research notes, correlations, and correspondence are also published throughout the year.

Submission and Authoring in ACS Paragon Plus
Preparing and Submitting Manuscripts Using TeX/LaTeX
The ACS Paragon Plus Environment currently supports TeX/LaTeX Version 2.0.2 and earlier. Authors must submit a complete Manuscript File as described below and they also have the option of submitting their own Manuscript PDF File for use during the peer review process.
If you experience any difficulty with your TeX/LaTeX submission or PDF conversion, please contact the ACS Publications Help Desk directly, by e-mail at ParagonPlus@acs.org or by telephone at (800) 227-9919.
File Preparation
Manuscript files prepared in TeX/LaTeX (Version 2.02 and earlier) will be used in journal production provided you adhere to the following guidelines.
- Use only LaTeX2e. Use of plain TeX and RevTeX is discouraged.
- Use generic style files whenever possible. Minimal formatting is all that is required in the document.
- Include all sections of the article in a single file. Include the list of references within the LaTeX file. Do not submit separate .bbl or .bib files containing references. Follow the correct reference style for the journal. Refer to a recent issue of the journal for the appropriate reference style. Captions must be created in the TeX/LaTeX document.
- References should be cited in text using \cite{}, and the list of references should be itemized using \bibitem{}.
- Use \frac to build fractions. Do not use \over or \stackrel to build fractions in displayed equations.
- Use \sum_ for summations and \prod_ for products.
- Use the array environment only to build true matrices, not for aligning multiline equations.
- Use characters/symbols in the generic LaTeX character set only. Symbols from other sets may not translate correctly.
- Avoid extensive use of \newcommand and \def.
- Some style files (text and bibliographic) that are available in the public domain may be used for most ACS journals, e.g., jacs.sty and jacs.bst; jpc.sty and jpc.bst; achemso. Please note that the ACS does not provide support for using these files.
Submitting a TeX/LaTeX Manuscript
For each file that you upload in ACS Paragon Plus, you must specify a ¡°File Designation.¡± Two file designations are available for submission of manuscripts prepared using TeX/LaTeX: the Manuscript File, which contains all of the files needed for publication, and the Manuscript PDF File, which can be uploaded for use as the proof during the peer review process.
The Manuscript File is required, as shown in Figure 1. Authors may choose one of two options for submitting the Manuscript File.
 Figure 1
Option 1: Manuscript File Submitted as TeX/LaTeX Files
The main body of the TeX/LaTeX document (i.e., a file ending with .tex or .ltx) should be uploaded and designated as the Manuscript File, and any file referenced by the main TeX/LaTeX document (including other .tex files) should be designated as a TeX/LaTeX Suppl File. Graphics may be uploaded separately using the Graphic for manuscript File Designation.
When you upload your TeX/LaTeX Manuscript File, the system will analyze the file to determine what additional resource files (such as image files and bibliographic files) are necessary to complete the document. The system will not allow you to submit your manuscript until you have completed your TeX/LaTeX document upload, including all necessary resource files uploaded as TeX/LaTeX Suppl Files. The system will also not allow you to submit your manuscript if you designate a file as a TeX/LaTeX Suppl File, and it is not referenced by any TeX/LaTeX files uploaded to the system.
You will be provided with system-generated HTML and PDF proofs of your submission, which you should review carefully to ensure all formulas and other special formatting are rendered correctly. Files uploaded as TeX/LaTeX Suppl Files will not be viewable as individual files when the HTML proof is created for the review process and they will not be rendered independently of the entire TeX/LaTeX document. Content uploaded separately will be displayed in the system-generated PDF proof at the location specified in your TeX/LaTeX document. If graphics are uploaded separately using the Graphic for manuscript File Designation, they will be appended to the Manuscript PDF File in the order you specified during the File Upload step.
When using this option, the acceptable TeX/LaTeX file types for the Manuscript File are .ltx and .tex.
Option 2: Manuscript File Submitted as ZIP Archive with Manuscript PDF File as Proof
Authors also have the option of compressing the entire TeX/LaTeX manuscript package into a ZIP archive for the Manuscript File, and then providing a Manuscript PDF File to be used as the proof during the peer review process, as shown in Figure 2. The reviewers will see your PDF proof instead of a system-generated PDF proof.
If you choose this option, you must submit all of the manuscript files as a single .zip file for the required Manuscript File designation, and you must submit a Manuscript PDF File to be used as the proof.
The Manuscript File should include the main body of the TeX/LaTeX document (i.e., a file ending with .tex or .ltx), all files referenced by the main TeX/LaTeX document (including other .tex files), and any graphics files, compressed into a single .zip file. Complete details on Acceptable Software by File Designation are also available.
 Figure 2
When using this option, the acceptable file type for the Manuscript File is .zip and the acceptable file type for the Manuscript PDF File file is .pdf.
