About the journal

The Journal of Chemometrics is devoted to the rapid publication of original scientific papers, reviews and short communications on fundamental and applied aspects of chemometrics. It also provides a forum for the exchange of information on meetings and other news relevant to the growing community of scientists who are interested in chemometrics and its applications. Short, critical review papers are a particularly important feature of the journal, in view of the multidisciplinary readership at which it is aimed.

Instructions to Authors

Initial manuscript submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to either:

Professor Karl S. Booksh, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, MS-1604, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA. E-mail: kbooksh@asu.edu, or
Professor Tormod Naes, Matforsk, Oslovegen 1, N-1430 As, Norway. E-mail: j.chem@matforsk.no.

The language of the journal is English. The manuscripts should be typed with double line spacing on one side of paper, with a 3 cm margin at each edge of the sheet. A copy of the manuscript on disk should be provided to permit editor abstraction of the title and abstract. The first page should include the title of the manuscript and the name, full address and telephone, e-mail and telefax details of the author to whom page proofs and any correspondence should be sent. The title of the paper should describe the contents fully, but concisely, and a short title of up to 70 characters should be provided. The second page should include only the title of the manuscript, without any indication of authors' names or affiliations. All subsequent pages of the manuscript should also be free of indications of author identity or affiliation. The original good quality illustrations must be submitted in addition to the triplicate copies.

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Electronic submission. The corresponding author must supply, together with the paper copy, two disks containing the final version of the manuscript once the manuscript is formally accepted by the Editor. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word-processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect. Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style. Authors should mark their papers with one of the following headings: Review, Original Research Article, Short Communication or Book Review. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title.

Nomenclature and style. Authors should conform to nomenclature, symbols and abbreviations adopted by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Compounds and figures should be numbered in separate sequences using Arabic numerals. All figures and tables must have captions. Greek letters and unusual symbols should be defined in the margin. The preferred style for matrices is bold capitals, and for vectors bold lower case. All boldface symbols should be clearly identified with a red wavy underline.

Summary. Every paper for publication must be preceded by a summary of not more than 250 words setting out the essential contents and typed on a separate sheet. This should be sufficiently comprehensive to allow effective use by abstracting services. The summary should be followed by 3 to 5 key words suitable for indexing purposes.

Tables. Tables should be typed, double-spaced, each on a separate sheet, and identified by Arabic numerals corresponding to the order in which they appear in the manuscript. A brief explanatory title should head the table.

Acknowledgements. These are placed at the end of the text preceding the references and should be brief. Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).

Short communications. These are short manuscripts for rapid publication and the author should inform the Editor why priority is warranted. In style and presentation they should conform to that laid down for manuscripts but length should be restricted to a maximum of two journal pages, i.e. approximately four pages of typed manuscript. They will be given preference over papers in speed of publication and should still be preceded by a summary.

Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as superior numbers and listed at the end of the paper. All references must be complete and accurate. Authors should cite all available published work. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. If the material cited is published but not readily accessible, then authors should provide, for example, the full Chemical Abstracts reference. References should be listed in the following style:

  1. Lindgren F, Geladi P, Rännar S, Wold S. Interactive variable selection (IVS) for PLS. Part 1: Theory and application. J. Chemometrics 1994; 8:349-364.
  2. Martens H, Naes T. Multivariate Calibration (2nd edn), vol.1. Wiley: Chichester, UK, 1989, 35-70.
  3. The Chemometrics Website. http://www.chemometrics.com/ [9 June 1999]

Journal titles must be abbreviated according to the system co-sponsored by the American Chemical Society and shown in The ACS Style Guide.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material are not acceptable. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Electronic versions of the artwork should be supplied at the intended size for printing; the maximum reproduction size of each illustration is 140 mm ?200 mm. The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal may be charged to the author. Colour versions of the illustrations, supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, can be shown in colour in the on-line journal in the Wiley InterScience website, and in black-and-white in print. There is no charge for this service. When submitting your manuscript please indicate clearly to the Editor if you wish to submit colour versions with your illustrations.

Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Journal of Chemometrics. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimize the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
