Aims and Scope

The Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN) is a premier resource for health care professionals committed to clinical scholarship that advances the health care of women and newborns. With a focus on nursing practice, JOGNN addresses the latest research, practice issues, policies, opinions, and trends in the care of women, childbearing families, and newborns.

This peer-reviewed scientific and technical journal is highly respected for groundbreaking articles on important - and sometimes controversial - issues. Articles published in JOGNN emphasize research evidence and clinical practice, building both science and clinical applications. JOGNN seeks clinical, policy and research manuscripts on the evidence supporting current best practice as well as developing or emerging practice trends. A balance of quantitative and qualitative research with an emphasis on biobehavioral outcome studies and intervention trials is desired. Manuscripts are welcomed on all subjects focused on the care of women, childbearing families, and newborns.

Guidelines for Authors Planning to Submit a Book Proposal

Textbook Proposals

The following list is intended both as a guide to the points which the author(s) should consider when planning a textbook, and to the information which we need in order to consider a new textbook proposal.

Synopsis: This should be a brief description of your objectives of this textbook and should include the following:

  • Courses: What are the course(s) on which this text would be used? Will it be used as compulsory or as recommended reading?
  • Level: What level of ability is assumed of the student? To what level does the book take the student? Can the book be used across various levels?
  • Competing texts: What are the main texts in use on similar courses at present? How does your proposal compare with the competition?
  • Organization: Please describe the book's organization, argument and coverage, including the general approach of text and stating whether this proposal is developed from current teaching practices or is proposing a new direction in course teaching?
  • Outline: In your outline, please provide your working title, a provisional list of contents, chapter headings and subheadings, and paragraph-length chapter descriptions.
  • Features: Please say what textbook features you are planning to incorporate ¨C e.g. Chapter introductions, chapter summaries, boxed summaries of key definitions, exercises, questions for discussion, examples or case studies, suggestions for further reading, glossaries. Please indicate whether you wish to include illustrations and where possible please highlight any likely complications (e.g. Permissions costs).
  • Length: What is the estimated extent? This is often best arrived at by assigning lengths to each chapter. The total word length should include figures, tables and any of the features mentioned above
  • Supporting material: It would be helpful if you could provide us with examples of course outlines for courses where you think the book would be used. If you have any material which you would regard as an adequate indication of the book's level and content (eg draft chapters, lecture notes, journal articles etc.), Please submit this also. We may need to see draft chapters before reaching a final decision on acceptance.
  • Schedule: Please provide a realistic date for completion of the final script.

Author(s): Please make sure we have your correct details including your full name, academic position, address and nationality. Please also provide a brief account of other posts held, relevant qualifications and previous publications.

Referees: Please supply names and addresses of several people whom you would regard as suitably qualified to comment on the proposal.

Other Book Proposals

The following list is intended both as a guide to the points which the author(s) should consider when planning a book, and to the information which we need in order to consider a new book proposal.

Statement of Aims

  • Background: Please describe the background to the book (e.g. is it derived from research, practice or teaching?).
  • Rationale: A brief description of the rationale behind the proposal. What are the book's main themes and objectives?
  • Approach: Description and reasons for the approach adopted.
  • Features: What aspects of this proposal would you emphasise as being of most importance? Are there any deliberate omissions? Any other features you would like taken into account.

Definition of Market

  • Readership: Who is the book primarily aimed at? Who will buy it? Who will read it? Would this subject have international appeal? If so, where Is the subject area of the proposal widely taught?
  • Level: What level of ability is assumed of the reader (undergraduate/postgraduate/prequalifying/postqualifying etc.)? To what level does the book take the reader?

Existing Books

  • Which existing books in the area are closest to your proposal and how do they compare? Is there a clear competitor?

Detailed synopsis

  • Outline: Provisional list of contents and working title, including chapter headings and subheadings and paragraph-length chapter descriptions explaining what you intend to cover in each chapter.
  • Length: Estimated overall length including references and footnotes, often best arrived at by assigning lengths to each chapter.
  • Timetable
  • Are any chapters available in draft form? When would you be able to make some available?
  • Illustrations: How many tables, diagrams or illustrations will there be (roughly)?

Additional Information

  • About you: Please make sure you supply correct details of full name, position, address, telephone number, e-mail where available, together with brief details of other posts, degrees, relevant qualifications, publications (with any books indicated), and nationality.
  • Referees: Please supply the names and addresses of several people whom you would regard as suitably qualified to comment on the proposal.
  • Supporting Material: Do you have any material which you would regard as an adequate indication of the book's level and content: draft chapters, lecture notes, journal articles etc.? We may need to see draft chapters before reaching a final decision on acceptance.
