Instructions for Authors

The Journal of Child Neurology (JCN) is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed biomedical journal publishing articles in the fields of child neurology, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric neuroradiology, child psychiatry, pediatric neuropsychology, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, pediatric neuroscience, and developmental neurobiology.

Submission Information: Submit four high-quality copies of the entire manuscript (including all figures) to: Roger A. Brumback, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Child Neurology, Creighton University Medical Center, 601 North 30th Street, Omaha, NE 68131-2197 (Tel: 402-280-4854; fax: 402-280-5247; e-mail: jcn@pathology.creighton.edu). The author must use proper heavy-duty packaging materials in submitting the manuscript to ensure that the submitted materials remain intact during the shipping process. JCN cannot be responsible for manuscripts damaged during shipping. Manuscripts can also be submitted to one of the Associate Editors for pre-review and subsequent forwarding to the Editor-in-Chief. The cover letter must identify the corresponding author, including mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. All text should be double-spaced on 81/2' 3 11' (22 cm 3 28 cm) white bond paper, one side only, using one-inch (2.5 cm) margins. Subheadings should be used to designate different sections of text. Computer preparation is preferable because a computer disk containing applicable files (text, figure legends, tables, graphs, etc) must be submitted with the manuscript. Label the computer disk with the name of the article, corresponding author, file names, and word processing software used. Prior to submission, manuscripts prepared by authors whose native language is not English must be edited for proper spelling, grammar, and syntax by a professional editor or colleague fluent in English. Authors should retain for their own files at least one complete copy of all material submitted (including illustrations and computer disk). Submission of a manuscript to JCN is taken as evidence that no part of the text or any of the figures has been copyrighted, published, or submitted for publication elsewhere unless information regarding previous publication is explicitly cited and permission obtained (a copy of such permission must be provided with the manuscript). All submissions (including invited material) are subjected to peer review. To expedite the review process and avoid undue expense, reviewers are instructed to destroy all reviewed materials. Therefore, rejected manuscripts and figures cannot be returned to the author.

Title Page: The title should be brief and meaningful. A listing of all authors¡¯ first and last names, highest academic or medical degrees, and affiliations should follow the title. Authorship should be limited to direct participants, although technical assistance can be acknowledged as a footnote. A separate paragraph should identify where the work was done, if supported by a grant or otherwise, and the meeting, if any, at which the paper was presented. List the complete name, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address for the corresponding author. Any potential conflicts of interest or commercial support of the authors should also be listed. For multiauthored submissions, up to three authors can be designated as ¡°first authors who contributed equally to this work¡± if the contributions of those individuals essentially constituted the majority of the work on the project. In addition, ¡°mentors who contributed equally to this work¡± can be used to define a category of authorship for senior investigators, clinicians, or directors who provided the support and mentorship necessary for the success of the work.

Abstract: An abstract of approximately 150 words should be provided on a separate sheet and should be factual, presenting the reason for the study, main findings, and conclusions.

Text: The text should follow the usual format for scientific articles. Authors should refer to articles in a current issue for guidelines. Additional information on style can be obtained from the following references:

1.             Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. N Engl J Med

                1997;336:309¨C315.

2.             The American Medical Association Manual of Style, ed 9. Baltimore, Williams & Wilkins, 1998.

5.             Kushlan JA: Use and abuse of abbreviations in technical communication. J Child Neurol

                1995;10:1¨C3.

Manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively. Avoid use of all abbreviations unless the abbreviation itself (eg, DNA) will be more familiar to readers than the words it replaces. Only generic names of drugs should be used. Express clinical laboratory data in conventional rather than SI (Syst¨¨me International) units, although SI units can be provided in parentheses.

Figures and Tables: Care must be given to preparation of figures and tables, including legends and explanatory titles. Technical excellence is important. Figures should be submitted as glossy prints, preferably 5' 3 7' (13 cm 3 18 cm). A label on the back of each print should indicate top, sequence number in order of in-text citation, and author¡¯s name. Lettering and arrows should be done in a professional manner. Internal scale markers should appear on electron photomicrographs. In addition to the glossy prints, electronic computer disk files of each figure should be submitted (.jpg for review purposes; 600 dpi, .tif or .eps, 3.5 inches wide for production). Color illustrations will be reproduced at a cost to the author. Recognizable photographs of patients must be accompanied by written permission for publication. Figure legends should be typewritten double-spaced and grouped on a separate sheet, with numbers corresponding to those on the figures themselves. Graphs should be submitted as glossy prints and should be finished drawings, not requiring further artwork. Along with printed copies on a separate sheet of paper, graphs should also be submitted as computer disk files (1200 dpi, .tif or .eps file, 3.5 inches wide). PowerPoint files are to be avoided. Tables should be numbered consecutively corresponding to in-text citation. Each table should be double-spaced on a separate sheet and be no larger than a single page. Include a brief descriptive title and an indication of its position in the text.

References: Authors are responsible for correctness and completeness of references. References should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. They should be arranged according to their order of appearance in the text, and indicated by superscript numbers in the text. References should be typed generally in accordance with the style of The American Medical Association Manual of Style (examples shown below). Only the first four authors should be listed; when there are more than four authors, list only the first three followed by ¡°et al.¡± Abbreviations of journal names should conform to the style in Index Medicus. Abstracts should be noted as such. Sample references are given below.

Conflict of Interest: Authors are to disclose any commercial association that may pose a conflict of interest in connection with their submitted article. Other types of associations (eg, consulting, stock ownership, or other equity interest or patent licensing arrangement) are to be disclosed to the Editor in a cover letter at the time of submission and will be held in confidence. Questions regarding conflict of interest should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief: Roger A. Brumback, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Child Neurology, Creighton University Medical Center, 601 North 30th Street, Omaha, NE 68131.

Electronic Submission Guidelines - Books and Journals

Authors are encouraged to submit their figures electronically, either on CD or via Email to the production editor handling the book or journal. Please follow the listed guidelines to ensure your illustrations are reproduced with the highest possible quality.

  • Illustrative charts, tables, diagrams, and photographs should be used to enhance, clarify, or reduce the length of the text. Include as many illustrations (photographs, charts, graphs, and radiographs) as are required to properly illustrate the text. Tables should not be merely a different form of expression of data adequately covered in the text; instead they should be selected and arranged for the sake of clarity and comprehensiveness.
  • Every illustration must be extremely sharp and color balanced. NO blurred images or overexposed or underexposed illustrations will be printed.
  • All figures and all tables will be separately numbered in consecutive series with the chapter number preceding the number of the figure or table, eg, Figure 8-10; Table 2-6; Table 14-5.
  • Tables and legends for illustrations should not be incorporated into the text but typed on separate sheets.
  • PowerPoint images (files) will not be accepted.
  • All images submitted as digital files must be scanned at > 300 dpi and saved in a TIFF or EPS format. Preferred formats: Photoshop (save as TIFF files) and Illustrator (save as EPS files). For electronic line art, scan images at a resolution of at least 1200 dpi and save electronic line art as EPS. For electronic photography, save as TIFF files at a resolution of 300 dpi. TIFF files should be set to the size you want to see the images in the book or journal. TIFF files cannot be resized by the publisher. If you have any questions, please contact our office.
