About the journal

The journal publishes original research and survey papers of high scientific level in Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Modelling. Numerical results or practical implementation of proposed new methods are necessary before publishing theoretical results.

Numerical Analysis is understood in the broadest sense and comprises in particular: numerical analysis of partial differential equations, of differential and integral equations, numerical methods in optimisation, numerical linear algebra.

Mathematical Modelling includes the formulation of a new mathematical problem and its study; the derivation of the equations of the problem being made rigorously with a precise formulation of the initial equations and assumptions; asymptotic and multiscale analysis of the problem. Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Modelling in this sense are particularly welcome when applied to emerging domains such as biology, material sciences, fluid mechanics applied to atmosphere/ocean interaction or to medicine, etc.

Instructions to Authors

The submission stage

Electronic and hard copy submissions are accepted. English is highly recommended. French is also accepted. Articles written in French must include an English translation of the title, the abstract and all figure and table captions.

Manuscripts should be addressed in triplicate to the Editorial Office to :

Sophie Darblade-Mamouni
SMAI
Institut Henri Poincar?BR>11, rue Pierre et Marie Curie
75231 Paris Cedex 05
France.

Electronic submission

Authors willing to submit their manuscripts electronically may do so, but only through the Editorial Office at:

m2an@esaim.emath.fr

> Submission of ready-to-print files: Global resulting Postscript of articles are welcome. They should however be carefully tested for printing and compressed before submission.

> Submission of separate text and figure files: Only standard files will be accepted:

  • LateX files coded with the m2an macro package
  • LateX files or plain TeX files without any personal package or particular fonts
  • Figures in Postscript (PS) or Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) format should be included.

All files (text and figures) should be archived into a single file (using "tar"), compressed and encoded before e-mailing.

The macro package in LateX2e, designed especially for ESAIM: M2AN, is available via anonymous ftp from ftp://ftp.edpsciences.org in the directory /pub/m2an/.

2. The acceptance stage

At this stage, an electronic version of the manuscript (TeX, LaTeX), which must exactly match the accepted version, should be sent to the publisher (even if the article had been previously submitted electronically).

The Editorial Office will send an acceptance letter to the corresponding author, and at the same time, will ask for electronic files of text and figures. All portions of the manuscript available in electronic form should be sent to the production department according to the instructions in the acceptance letter from the Editorial Office or to be found at http://www.edpsciences.org.

If authors cannot provide an electronic file of their text, they must advise the production department as soon as they receive the acceptance letter, to avoid any delay in the beginning of the production process.

3. The proof correction stage

Authors should keep in mind that reading proofs is their responsibility. Corrections should therefore be clear and made on the proofs using a red pen. The use of standard proof correction marks is recommended.

TeX, LaTeX files are modified by the production department to follow general presentation rules of the journal.

The main aim of proofreading is to correct errors that may have occurred during the production process, and not to modify the content of the paper. The reproduction of artwork, the layout of the pages and equation breakings introduced by the production staff should carefully be checked. Corrections that might lead to a change in the page layout should be avoided.

The proofs, once corrected, should be signed and returned to the publisher as soon as possible.

Offprint orders

The offprint order form must be filled out and returned together with the corrected proofs. If the publisher receives no order of any kind from the authors, it will be assumed that only the 25 free offprints are requested.

4. Style guide

Title, Abstract

Title should be simple and informative. A shortened version of the title consisting of a maximum of 75 characters (including spaces) for running headers should also be provided. An abstract in English is required. Abstracts in English/French should accompany each manuscript; they should be completely self-contained, not exceeding 200 words and written as single paragraphs.

Author(s) name(s) and affiliations

A list of all authors, as well as corresponding addresses, should be provided. Addresses should contain all information necessary for an effective mail delivery. E-mail, fax and telephone numbers should also be provided to speed up communication between Editorial Office, readers and authors.

Mathematics Subject Classification scheme

Each manuscript must be assigned indexing codes. MSC numbers, developed jointly by the American Mathematical Society and Zentralblatt, may be found at the URL's: http://www.ams.org/msc/ and http://www.emis.de/msc2000.html. Keywords are also required.

Numbering

Equations, Lemma, Theorem... should be numbered with the section: for example, equation 3 of Section 1, must be numbered equation (1.3). Numbering must be labelled on the right side.

References

References should be cited numerically in the text (for example, [1], [2, 5, 7], [8-10]). All references must be labelled. Items in the bibliography are ordered alphabetically by authors. Authors may be cited in the text by name, but without initials. Authors should use the models below in the final reference list.

Examples for Journals, Books, Conference Proceedings and Doctoral dissertations, respectively,

[1] R. Brown and C. Green, Finite Element Method for Navier-Stokes Equation. ESAIM: M2AN 44 (1999) 123-144.

[2] J.R. Brown and F. Smith, Finite Element Method for Navier-Stokes

Equation. ESAIM: M2AN (to appear).

[5] J.M. Smith, Finite Element Method for Navier-Stokes Equation. Ph.D. thesis, University of Paris XI, France (1990).

Figures

Each figure should be cited in the text. Good-quality figures have the following characteristics:

  • They should be produced with a good quality laser printer and have lines, letters, numbers and symbols of uniform strength and contrast.

  • Authors should avoid including any unnecessary text around a figure, such as captions, figure numbers, author or file names. These indications should be handwritten on the back or at the bottom of the original figures.

  • Parts of diagrams, graphs, ... should be clearly indicated by different types of hatching. Grey scales, which might get difficult to distinguish after reducing, or which often disappear during the printing process, should be avoided. Also, parts a, b, c, etc. of a figure should be in separate files.

Color illustrations are accepted, provided that authors make a contribution towards the cost of four-color reproduction and printing. The present rates (tax-free) are 732 Euros for the first page of color illustrations. Prices will be given upon request in case of additional four-color pages.
