About the journal

Superlattices and Microstructures is a journal devoted to the science and technology of synthetic microstructures, microdevices, surfaces and interfaces.

The last decade has seen rapid developments in the fabrication, characterization and conceptual understanding of synthetic microstructures in many different material systems including silicon, III-V and II-VI semiconductors, metals, ceramics and organics. The objective of this journal is to provide a common interdisciplinary platform for the publication of the latest research results on all such "nanostructures" with dimensions in the range of 1 - 100 nm; the unifying theme here being the dimensions of these artificial structures rather than the material system in which they are fabricated.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of manuscripts
All papers should be written in English. Authors are requested to submit an electronic file of their original manuscript, preferably by e-mail to
superlattices@harcourt.com
If you are unable to submit your paper by e-mail, please send a printed copy to
Superlattices and Microstructures
c/o Elsevier Science
Block A2, Westbrook Centre
Milton Road
Cambridge CB4 2YG
U.K.
Please include your electronic mail address which will be used for all communication regarding your manuscript, unless you indicate otherwise. You will receive an acknowledgement upon receipt of your manuscript.

Electronic formats accepted for reviewing purposes include LATEX, Word documents, PDFs and postscript files. If you decide to submit a manuscript in LATEX, please prepare your manuscript according to the guidelines here

During the period prior to acceptance, inquiries regarding the status of the manuscript can be sent to superlattices@harcourt.com mentioning the name of the first author and the title of the paper. It is recommended that you include with your cover letter a list of five reviewers (with contact information if possible) who are qualified to judge your manuscript. This will greatly aid the editor in evaluating your manuscript, although the editor may choose a reviewer from outside your list.

Papers essentially of an advertising nature will not be accepted. All submissions will be independently refereed. Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Types of Contributions
Original research papers; review articles; technical notes; short reports; news and announcements; book reviews; letters to the editors.

Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The title of the paper should unambiguously reflect its content. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. The use of proprietary names should be avoided. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Paper Length: Generally, the size of the manuscript should be a minimum consistent with clarity.
Abstracts: Each paper should be provided with an abstract of 100-150 words, reporting concisely on the purpose and results of the paper.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Units: The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if, in certain instances, it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. The unit billion (109 in America, 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and should not be used. Abbreviations for units should follow the suggestions of the British Standards publication BS 1991. The full stop should not be included in abbreviations, e.g. m (not m.), ppm (not p.p.m.), and should be used in preference to per cent and per. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or may not be readily understood by an international readership, units should be put in full. Current recognised (IUPAC) chemical nomenclature should be used, although commonly accepted trivial names may be used where there is no risk of ambiguity.
Digital object identifier: Elsevier now assigns a unique digital object identifier (DOI) to every article it publishes. The DOI appears on the title page of the article. It is assigned after the article has been accepted for publication and persists throughout the lifetime of the article. Due to its persistence, it can be used to query Elsevier for information on the article during the production process, to find the article on the Internet through various Web sites, including Science Direct, and cite the article in academic references. When using an Elsevier article in a reference section, it is important to include the article's DOI in the reference as volume and page information is not always available for articles published online.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Coskun [1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs should be submitted as contrasting black and white prints on glossy paper. If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Authors will be charged for colour at current printing costs.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (e.g. in graphs).
Disk submission: Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper on disk, along with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of disk submission and formats can be obtained from
http://authors.elsevier.com
Proofs: Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed.
Offprints: Twenty-five Journal specific offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (after publication) will incur a 50% surcharge.
Copyright: All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. This includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
Author Enquiries: For enquiries relating to the submission of articles (including electronic submission where available), please visit the Author Gateway from Elsevier Science at
http://authors.elsevier.com The Author Gateway also provides the facility to track accepted articles and set up e-mail alerts to inform you of when an article's status has changed, as well as detailed artwork guidelines, copyright information, frequently asked questions and more.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
