Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations
Copyright ?2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., A Wiley Company |
An international journal that aims to cover research into the development and analysis of new methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations, it is intended that it be readily readable by and directed to a broad spectrum of researchers into numerical methods for partial differential equations throughout science and engineering. The numerical methods and techniques themselves are emphasized rather than the specific applications. The Journal seeks to be interdisciplinary, while retaining the common thread of applied numerical analysis.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts suitable for publication in this journal should describe new developments in the use of numerical methods for the solution of partial differential equations in any area of science and engineering. While manuscripts devoted to the theoretical analysis of numerical techniques or the application of new techniques to practical problems are within the scope of the journal, the main focus is on the exposition of novel methodology. In addition, recognizing the practical value of improved understanding, articles that contribute to an increase in the clarity, precision, simplicity, generality, or conceptual unity of the methodology are encouraged.
The editors recognize formal papers and technical notes. Formal papers are those dedicated to the complete exposition of a new development, its analysis, or its application. A technical note is a short communication generally dedicated to the analysis or evaluation of an existing methodology. In general, the peer review process for technical notes will be expedited to assure timely publication.
Manuscripts for this journal and all correspondence concerning manuscripts under review should be sent to either George F. Pinder, College of Engineering and Mathematics, University of Vermont, Votey Bldg., Burlington, VT 05405; Ismael Herrera, Instituto de Geofisica, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Apdo. Postal 22-582, 14000 Mexico, D. F. Mexico; or John R. Whiteman, Institute of Computational Mathematics, Brunel University, Uxbridge, Middlesex UB8 3PH, United Kingdom. Address all other correspondence to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.
A covering letter must accompany each submission indicating the name, address, and telephone number of the author to whom all correspondence and proofs are to be addressed. An affiliation must be supplied for each author. Authors are asked to include the full name and complete contact information for five potential reviewers.
Submission of a manuscript to the Editors implies that the paper has not been published, that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere, and that, if the work reported is officially sponsored, it has been released for publication. No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed publication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to publisher. A publication agreement may be obtained from the editor or the publisher. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published papers will be vested in the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication. A copy of the agreement, executed and signed by the author, is required with each manuscript submission. (If the article is a "work made for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.) No manuscript can be accepted without a signed copyright transfer.
Electronic Submissions: Authors are encouraged to submit papers using LaTeX. LaTeX macros, style files, and documentation are available from the publisher via the Internet at ftp.wiley.com/public/journals/tex/nummeth. For more information, see Guidelines for Electronic Submission.
Manuscripts should be submitted in English in triplicate, one original and two copies, on standard 8 1/2 x 11 in. (21 x 28 cm) paper with 1 in. (2.5 cm) margins. All copy, including captions, footnotes, and references, must be typed double-spaced and on one side of the sheet only.
The paper should be divided into sections with appropriate section headings.
Each formal paper must be accompanied by an abstract not to exceed 200 words. It should consist of a concise statement of the main ideas contained in the paper as distinct from a summary.
Authors are cautioned to type, wherever possible, all mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulas and to identify in the margin all Greek characters or unusual symbols the first time they are used (e.g., Greek kappa and the letter "kay;" Greek chi, and letter "eks," and the multiplication symbol; the number one and letter "ell"; the number zero and the letter "oh"; etc.). Underline all vector quantities and use fractional exponents in place of radical symbols.
Authors are requested to avoid footnotes to text wherever possible.
Wiley's Journal Styles and EndNote EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style. Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal. How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy of EndNote, click here. Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.
All literature references should be numbered consecutively in the order of appearance in the text. All references should be gathered together and placed after the end of text. References should be styled in accordance with the reference style of the AMS (American Mathematical Society). Sample references are given below.
1. G. Liao and D. Anderson, "A new approach to grid generation," Appl Anal 44, 285 (1992).
2. Babuska, O. C. Zienkiewicz, J. Cafo, and E. R. Oliveira (Editors), Accuracy, estimates and adaptive refinements in finite element computations, Wiley, New York, 1986.
3. R. C. Y. Chin and G. W. Hedstrom, "Domain decomposition: An instrument of asymptotic-numerical methods," in Asymptotic analysis and numerical solutions of partial differential equations, H. G. Kaper and M. Garbey (Editors), Marcel Dekker, New York, 1991, p. 33.
References to unpublished material are discouraged.
All figures must be cited in the text, numbered, and supplied with captions. All captions should appear together on a separate sheet after the reference listing.
Original, full-tone prints are required for photographs. Screened prints are unacceptable. Figures should be professionally prepared and submitted in a form suitable for reproduction (camera-ready copy). Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser printer. Line art is usually reduced so that the lettering is 1.5 mm high when printed.
All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Carol Ann McNelis at 201-748-6009/cmcnelis@wiley.com for further information.
All tables should be cited sequentially in text, numbered, and supplied with explanatory captions. Table columns should have explanatory headings. Tables should be supplied typed on separate sheets and placed at the end of the manuscript following any figure captions. Tables should never be supplied typed within the body of the manuscript.
Authors will be supplied with proofs to check the accuracy of typesetting. Authors may be charged for any alterations to the proofs beyond those needed to correct typesetting errors. Proofs must be checked and returned within forty-eight hours of receipt.
Twenty-five reprints will be forwarded; there are no page charges. Additional reprints can be purchased by filling out the reprint order form which will be sent to the corresponding author along with the proofs. Reprints are normally shipped six to eight weeks after publication of the issue in which the item appears.
Guidelines for Electronic SubmissionAuthors are strongly encouraged to deliver the final, accepted version of their manuscript on disk.
- Storage Medium. 3?inch diskette in IBM MS-DOS or Macintosh format.
- Software. LaTeX is preferred.
- All TeX files will be accepted. However, if you prefer to use the macros created by the publisher they are available via the Internet on the John Wiley & Sons, Inc. FTP server. The address is: ftp.wiley.com/public/journals/tex/nummeth. Log in as anonymous and use your e-mail address as a password. For more information see the README file in the nummeth subdirectory.
- Illustrations. Electronic illustrations are encouraged, but not required. Submit each article's illustrations in a separate directory on the same disk as the article. TIFF and EPS files or native application files are accepted. For grey scale and color figure submissions please contact us for more detailed instructions.
- File names. Submit each journal article as one single file. Each file should be named using your last name (not to exceed 8 letters). If your last name exceeds eight letters it should be truncated to fit.
- Label the disk with your name, the title of your article, the file name, and the program used.
- The disk must be accompanied by hard copy printout.
