Wiley's Journal Styles and EndNote

Editorial Policy: Manuscripts will be considered for publication on the condition that they are original and submitted solely to Genetic Epidemiology; submission of a manuscript is understood to imply the acceptance of this condition. Genetic Epidemiology is a peer-reviewed journal for discussion of research on the genetic causes of the distribution of human traits in families and populations. Emphasis is placed on the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to human disease as revealed by genetic, epidemiological, and biologic investigations. Incorporation of underlying biology and population genetics into conceptual models is favored. The Journal seeks original articles comprising either applied research or innovative statistical, computational, or genomic methodologies that advance studies in genetic epidemiology. Other types of reports are encouraged, such as letters to the editor, topic reviews, and perspectives from other fields of research that will likely enrich the field of genetic epidemiology. Suitable manuscripts will be judged by at least two reviewers before a decision is made on their acceptance. Review criteria include the scientific importance of the research topic; scientific innovation and quality - including design, measurement, and analysis methods; and clarity and conciseness of presentation. When submitting manuscripts, authors may suggest reviewers. Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, authors will be required to sign an agreement transferring copyright to the publisher, who reserves copyright. No published material may be reproduced or published elsewhere without the written permission of the publisher and the author. The journal and the editor will not be responsible for the loss of manuscripts at any time. Reprint order forms will be sent with proofs.

Manuscripts, to be submitted in triplicate, and all the editorial correspondence should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief: Daniel J. Schaid, Ph.D., Genetic Epidemiology, Section of Biostatistics - Harwick 7, Department of Health Sciences Research, Mayo Clinic, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, Minnesota 55905; (telephone) 507-284-5568; (fax) 507-284-9542; (email) genetic_epi@mayo.edu (note underscore, not hyphen).

Journal Sections: In addition to Original Articles, the journal publishes Review Articles, Letters to the Editor, Brief Communications, Book and Software Reviews, and Announcements.

Preparation of Manuscripts: All manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced throughout, including references, tables, and footnotes, on 8.5 x 11 inch (21.5 x 28 cm) paper with one-inch (2.5 cm) top, bottom, left and right margins. Original articles should be no longer than 25 double-spaced typewritten pages (including figures, tables, and references). Longer articles may be acceptable, but should be justified in the cover letter to the editor. All pages should be numbered sequentially, beginning with the title page, and arranged in the following order:

Title Page: The title page carries a concise title, the names of the authors, identification of each author's specific affiliation, a running title of no more than 48 characters, and the name, complete address, and telephone number of the contact person assuming responsibility for all correspondence and questions relating to the article.

Abstract Page: The abstract (page 2 of the manuscript) should be a succinct condensation of the contents of the article, give actual results, conclusions, and implications, and not exceed 250 words.

Key Words: The key words should reflect the central topic of the article, without repeating terms used in the title. They should be typed on the page carrying the abstract.

Text: Articles should be clear and concise. In addition to standard dictionaries, use the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, Sixth Edition, 1994, available from: Council of Biology Editors, Inc., 11 South La Salle Street, Chicago, Illinois 60603-1210, U.S.A. Where applicable, the text should follow the format: Introduction, Materials, Methods and Results (may run together consecutively), and Discussion. The use of subheads, equations, and paragraph titles is encouraged. The last element of text before the references is Acknowledgments.

Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

References should be cited chronologically by author and year of publication in the text and enclosed in square brackets (for example, [Robinson et al., 1993]). References should appear in alphabetical order in the bibliography without numbering. Abbreviations of journal names should conform to the style of Index Medicus. The following guides are advocated for reference styles:

Robinson WP, Barbara J, Rich SS, Thomson G. 1993. Homozygous parent affected sib pair method for detecting disease predisposing variants: Application to insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Genet Epidemiol 10:273-88.

Rothwell NV. 1993. Understanding genetics - a molecular approach. New York: Wiley-Liss.

Pyeritz RE. 1993. The Marfan syndrome. In: Royce PM, Steinmann B, editors. Connective tissue and its heritable disorders - molecular, genetic, and medical aspects. New York: Wiley-Liss. p 437-68.

Legends: The legends for figures should be assembled and typed (double spaced) on a sheet of paper separate from the text at the end of the manuscript. Explain abbreviations that appear on the figure. If the figure presents labeling alphabetics (a, b, c), the legend should be typed to reflect the exact presentation of those alphabetics. Table heads should be typed on the tables and not provided as separate table legends.

Illustrations: Provide one set of original illustrations and two photocopies of each. Illustrations should be of the highest quality. Halftone photographs with insufficient contrast will not reproduce well. Glossy black-and-white photographs, 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 inches (12 x 18 or 20 x 25 cm) in size are preferred. Do not submit original records, graphs, radiographic plates, or artwork. Typewritten or hand lettering is unacceptable. Figures are numbered with arabic numerals. Color will not be printed except when paid for by the author. Identify each illustration by affixing on the back a gummed label on which is listed: the number of the illustration, the name of the lead author, the title of the manuscript, and an arrow indicating top of illustration.

All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Karen Accavallo at kaccaval@wiley.com for further information.

Tables: Each table must have a title and should be numbered with a Roman numeral in its order of appearance in the text.

Disk Submission Instructions

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor, including TeX and LaTex, are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).
