About the journal

The Journal of Clinical Oncology is the primary source of scientific discourse for the American Society of Clinical Oncology. In print, and in electronic media, the Journal¡¯s goal is to publish the highest quality manuscripts dedicated to clinical research. Original Reports remain the focus of the Journal, but this scientific communication is enhanced by appropriately selected editorials, reviews, and occasional pieces that relate to the care of patients with cancer.

Journal of Clinical Oncology (ISSN 0732-183X) is published 24 times a year, twice monthly, by American Society of Clinical Oncology. Periodical postage is paid at Alexandria, VA, and at additional mailing offices.

Instructions to Authors

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION GUIDELINES

An original and four complete copies of the manuscript must be submitted, for a total of FIVE COPIES. Manuscripts must be printed, double- or triple-spaced on good quality, standard size white paper with margins of at least 1 inch. Pages must be numbered, starting with the title page. The Submission Cover Sheet and Potential Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form, available in every issue of the Journal, upon request from the Editorial Office, or at www.jco.org, must be filled out and sent with all submissions. A computer disk is required with all submissions, whether the manuscript is new or revised. The Diskette Transmittal Guidelines/Form must accompany the disk. These forms may be downloaded from this web site in PDF format by clicking the appropriate link. The forms may be photocopied and disseminated as needed.

Title Page

The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: (1) title of the report; (2) a list of no more than 20 authors' names; (3) name(s) of the institution(s) at which the work was done; (4) acknowledgments of research support; (5) name, address, phone, fax and e-mail address* information of the corresponding author; and (6) a running head that is no more than 45 characters; and (7) list where and when the study has been presented in part elsewhere, if applicable. *Please note, an e-mail address of the corresponding author is required with ALL submissions.

Abstract

The second page of the manuscript is to contain an abstract of 250 words or less. Abstracts must be organized and formatted according to the following headings: (1) PURPOSE, (2) PATIENTS AND METHODS (or MATERIALS AND METHODS, METHODS, or similar heading, following the structure of the text), (3) RESULTS, and (4) CONCLUSION. Authors may use DESIGN instead of PATIENTS AND METHODS in abstracts of review articles.

Text

Research manuscripts must have the following sections clearly identified: INTRODUCTION, PATIENTS AND METHODS (or MATERIALS AND METHODS, METHODS, or similar heading appropriate for the manuscript), RESULTS, and DISCUSSION. A summary should not be included at the end of the text. The body of the manuscript should be written as concisely as possible and should not exceed 3500 words. The Journal adheres to the style guidelines set forth by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Please refer to www.icmje.org for more information.

Figures

Figures must be cited in order in the text using Arabic numerals. A uniform font and type size is required for all figures: Helvetica font and type size between 8 and 12 point. All figures must be submitted in triplicate sorted sets (one per manuscript), each of which is individually identified on the back by the corresponding author's name and figure number. Electron micrographs, halftones, and photographs must be submitted as glossy prints; line drawings, charts, and graphs may be submitted as either glossy prints or laser printer-generated figures.

Contributors will pay all costs of printing color photographs. The publisher will contact the corresponding author regarding the exact cost.

Figures are generally reduced in size for publication. Crop marks should be indicated for those figures that can be cropped. To maintain legibility, all numbers, letters, and symbols should be large enough originally so that when reduced they will remain at least 1/12 inch (2 mm) high (ie, approximately the same size as used for this line of type). Do not mount glossy figures on cardboard or other paper. Figures not properly prepared will be returned to the contributor for revision or will be re-lettered by the printer at a cost charged to the contributor.
Figure legends are required and should be typewritten or printed double-spaced on a separate sheet. All relevant and explanatory information extraneous to the actual figure should be included in the text. Figure legends may not exceed 45 words.
If a figure(s) has been reprinted, a letter of permission from the copyright holder must be provided by the corresponding author upon acceptance of the manuscript. The accepted manuscript will not be published without the necessary granted permission.

For more information on uniform figure submission requirements please refer to http://cpc.cadmus.com/da/.

Tables

Tables must be cited chronologically in the text using Arabic numbers. Each numbered table should be typed on a separate sheet, with a title and a legend that includes definitions of abbreviations that have been used in the table but not in the text.
If a table(s) has been reprinted, a letter of permission from the copyright holder must be provided by the corresponding author upon acceptance of the manuscript.

Keywords

On the "Manuscript Submission Cover Sheet," authors are asked to provide keywords relating to the manuscript's topic for indexing purposes. Limit your suggestions to no more than six words.

References

References are to be compiled at the end of the text and must be listed and numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text. They should be typewritten or printed double-spaced, under the heading REFERENCES. Abbreviations for titles of medical periodicals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus and on MEDLINE. The "List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus" includes the latest abbreviations and can be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402, or at www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html. Inclusive page numbers must be cited in the reference. When a reference is an abstract, editorial, or published letter, it must be identified as such in parentheses at the end of the reference. When a reference is a personal communication, it should be included in the body of the text and not cited in the reference list.

Appendices/Acknowledgments

Due to page constraints, the Journal is unable to publish appendices used to acknowledge study participants or contributors. All appendices used as an Acknowledgment section will be published in the online version only. A reference to the appendices being available online will be in the print version. Acknowledgments at the end of the manuscript should contain no more than 30-50 words.

Disk Requirements

A diskette is required with all submissions, whether the manuscript is new or revised. A manuscript submission will not be processed without a disk. The ¡°Diskette Transmittal Form,¡± available upon request from the Editorial Office or at www.jco.org, should be completed and submitted with the disk. A copy of the guidelines for preparing and submitting a diskette is also available upon request from the Editorial Office and at www.jco.org.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Copyright Form

In compliance with the requirements of the insurance carrier, the authors will be requested, upon acceptance of the manuscript, to sign a statement confirming that the manuscript "contains no material the publication of which violates any copyright or other personal or proprietary right of any person or entity."

Page Proofs

Contributors are provided with page proofs and are asked to proofread them for typesetting errors. Authors are required to review their page proofs carefully. Minor changes are allowed, but authors will be charged for excessive alterations. The Editor-in-Chief must approve all excessive alterations, which may delay publication of the manuscript. Page proofs not returned by the publisher¡¯s deadline will result in a delay in the manuscript¡¯s publication date.

The Journal employs electronic transmittal of proofs. When galley proofs are available for downloading, the corresponding author will receive an e-mail notification with a password and web address where the proofs may be downloaded into a .pdf file and printed. Paper copies will not be sent out. Corrections to page proofs must be returned via mail or fax within 48 hours.

Reprints

An order form, showing cost of reprints, is sent with the page proofs so that authors may order reprints before publication. Reprints may be ordered after publication but at a higher cost. The reprint order form must be returned within 48 hours of receipt with the page proofs, even if reprints are not ordered.

Permissions

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright of the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). If any portion of an article submitted for consideration (i.e., figure or table) has been previously published, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required regardless of authorship or publisher, except for documents in the public domain. ASCO will not refuse any reasonable request by the author for permission to reproduce any of his or her contributions to the Journal.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system is a framework for identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment. The system was designed for managing intellectual content, linking customers with suppliers, and enabling automated copyright management for all types of media.

A DOI can point website users, Journal subscribers, and members directly to online articles cited in Journal references. It is different from commonly used pointers such as the URL, Uniform Resource Locator, because it identifies an object, not the place where the object is located. For instance, if an article were to be Published Ahead of Print, the DOI provides a way to locate and cite the article prior to printed publication. In addition to providing digital identification, the DOI will enable comprehensive reference linking through CrossRef (for more information go to www.crossref.org).

In order to provide digitial protection, we assign a Digitial Object Identifier (DOI) to all published articles. The DOI is located at the bottom of the first page of each published article.
