Abbreviated title: Appl. Microbiol.

The term "systematic microbiology" refers to aspects of the systematics of microorganisms including biotechnologically or ecologically important fungi, to studies on genealogical and phylogenetic relationships, and to comparative physiology and biochemistry relevant to research on microorganisms.
The term "applied microbiology" covers aspects of agricultural, food, industrial, and ecological microbiology, e.g. the distribution of microorganisms in natural and man-made environment. Accordingly, original papers are published from the following fields of microbiology:

  1. systematics: e.g. new descriptions and revisions of taxa.
  2. morphology and physiology: comparative studies, particularly concerning classification or phylogenetic assignment of considered organisms.
  3. applied microbiology: all aspects of agricultural, industrial, food, and sewage microbiology.
  4. ecology: all aspects of soil, water, and air microbiology including the structure and function of microbial communities, their role in the material cycle and how they are effected by human activity.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions to Authors

Copyright: Submission of a manuscript implies that the submitted work has not been published before (except as part of a thesis or lecture note or report, or in the form of an abstract); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out; that written permission of copyright holders was obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources; that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors hand over the transferable copyrights of the accepted manuscript to the publisher; and that the manuscript or parts thereof will thus not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyrights include, without spatial or timely limitation, the mechanical, electronic and visual reproduction and distribution; electronic storage and retrieval; and all other forms of electronic publication or any other types of publication including all subsidiary rights.

Scope of the Journal: Papers will preferably be accepted from the following branches of microbiology:
Systematics:
for instance new descriptions and revisions of taxa, methods for the determination of taxonomical and genealogical relationships.
Morphology and physiology:
comparative studies, particularly concerning the classification or phylogenetic assignment of organisms, their mode of life and role in the environment, their importance for agriculture, food processing and biotechnology.
Applied microbiology
: all aspects of agricultural, industrial, food and sewage microbiology, inasmuch as the main emphasis concerns the role or characteristics of the microbial; studies on the composition and dynamics of microorganism populations associated with the manufacture and decay of all types of products; qualitative and quantitative determination procedures, etc.
Ecology:
all aspects of soil, water and air microbiology including the analysis of populations occurring at various locations, their role in the material cycle and the effect of human activity upon them.

Editorial Remarks: Manuscripts (in duplicate) and all matters concerning editorial affairs should be submitted to the Managing Editor:

Professor Dr. K. H. Schleifer, Lehrstuhl f¨¹r Mikrobiologie, Technische Universität M¨¹nchen, Am Hochanger 4, D -85350 Freising, Germany;
Professor Dr. M. Teuber, ETH Z¨¹rich, Institut f¨¹r Lebensmittelwissenschaft, Schmelzbergstraße 9, CH -8092 Z¨¹rich.

"Systematic and Applied Microbiology" publishes papers in English, inasmuch as they are pertinent to the area of interest of the journal and conform to the following specifications.
Minireviews. Short reviews, normally not exceeding 5 printed pages, are published in areas of particular interest and current importance. They must be based on published articles.
Full length papers
should not exceed 8 printed pages ?corresponding to approximately 20 pages of one-and-one-half-spaced typescript. Longer papers can be published in full length only in exceptional cases.
Short communications
should not exceed 2 printed pages, including illustrations. The paper should be preceded by a brief English summary. A division of the text into various sections may be dispensed with.

Preparation of Manuscript:
Title page: title of paper (authors are requested to avoid subtitles); name( s) and surname( s) of author( s); laboratory or institution; running title (max. 60 letters); adress of the corresponding author; list of any nonstandard abbreviations (standard abbreviations as those used in the biochemical literature, e. g. in the European J. Biochem. 1, 259?266 (1967), need not be defined).
Summary
and list of up to 10 key words should follow on the second page (indicating the scope of the paper).
Organisation and style: the paper should consists of an Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion. Latin names of organisms should be marked for italics by underlining. Names of authors in the text must be written in capital letters. Descriptions of methods and less important parts of the text should be marked at the margin for small print. Weights and measures data should be quoted in SI units. Authors are responsible for the linguistic quality.
New nucleotide data must be submitted and deposited in the DDBJ/ EMBL/ GenBank databases and an accession number obtained before the paper can be be accepted for publication. Submission to any one of the three collaborating databanks is sufficient to ensure data entry in all. The accession number should be included in the manuscript e. g. as a footnote on the title page. 'Note: Nucleotide sequence data reported are available in the DDBJ/ EMBL/ GenBank databases under the accession number( s) ...' If requested the database will withhold release of data until publication. The most convenient method for submitting sequence data is by World Wide Web:
EMBL via Webin:
http://www.ebi.ac.uk/embl/Submission/webin.html
GenBank via Bankit: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/BankIt
DDBJ via Sakura: http://sakura.ddbj.nig.ac.jp
Alternatively, the stand-alone submission tool 'Sequin' is available from the EBI at http://www.ebi.ac.uk/Services/Sequin and from NCBI at http://www.ncbo.nlm.nih.gov/Sequin

References in the text should be cited with numbers:

¡¤   Mitchell and Catalan [6] and Baird-Parker [2]

¡¤   ... was discussed [6, 2]

¡¤   Ventosa et al. [10] described

Reference to literature: The List of References, including all references mentioned in the text and for tables, should appear in alphabetical order, numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers.
Example of a journal paper citation:

7. Mitchell, T. G., Hendrie, M. S., Shewan, J. M.: The taxonomy, differentiation and identification of Cytophaga species. J. Appl. Bact. 32, 40?50 (1969).

Example of a book citation:

2. Baird-Parker, A. C.: Micrococcaceae, pp. 478?490. In: Bergey's manual of determinative bacteriology (R. E. Buchanan, N. E. Gibbons, eds.) 8th ed., Baltimore, Williams and Wilkins 1974.

Figures: Line drawings: Original in black ink or a good quality laser print. Photographs: Glossy prints, with good contrast, not glued to paper (Labelling on attached sheet). Color pictures: Colored glossy prints or latern slides. The cost of publishing colours figures need to be borne by the authors. The costs are approx. 350.?EUR for each printed colour page.
Reprints: Authors will receive 50 reprints of each contribution free of charge. Additional copies (in numbers of 50, 100, etc., only) must be paid for.
These orders must be made with the single proof copy (galley proof).
Camera ready copy: Sequences, drawings, tables, chemical formulas, etc., that can be photographically reproduced for publication without further typesetting are referred to as "camera ready". Such copies may also be prepared for complicated mathematical or physical formulas, portions of genetic maps, diagrams, and flow schemes. Camera-ready copies must be carefully prepared to conform to the style of the Journal and should be submitted as glossy prints. The advantage in submitting camera-ready copy is that the material will appear exactly as envisioned by the author, and no second proof-reading is necessary.

The latest version of the manuscript should be sent to the Managing Editor a complete printed version including text and pictures, and if possible, as a floppy disc copy matching the submitted printed version.

  • Text, including italics and bold characters, should be saved as Word or WordPerfect documents in DOS or Macintosh format.
  • Pictures should be saved as tiff for DOS or eps-format for Macintosh.
