About the journal
The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association is designed for veterinarians in small animal practice. Manuscripts submitted, including research articles, should be of value to the small animal practitioner, relate to clinical practice, or both. Decisions on publication of manuscripts are based on the opinions of at least one outside reviewer and the editor. Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines will be returned.
Providing the latest information on advancements in veterinary medicine, the Journal has been a source of practical research for more than 30 years. The Journal addresses the scientific issues its readers have deemed most significant in their practices.
Editorial submissions are reviewed by members of AAHA's distinguished 95-member peer review board, a vital link to the top minds in the profession. This double-blind process protects the identities of authors and reviewers for unbiased, top-notch articles. Presented with an abstract and citation, every article is given a clear category designation to provide a context for learning.
The Journal is published bimonthly beginning with the January/February issue. A comprehensive index appears in the November/December issue.

Further, the undersigned author warrants that the article is original, not under consideration by another journal, and has not been published previously. Manuscripts submitted without transmittal letters or with transmittal letters that do not contain the above language will not be accepted. Manuscripts are received with the understanding that they have not been published in or submitted to other publications. Address, Phone, Fax, and Email
Your transmittal letter also must include the complete mailing address, email address, phone number, and fax number of the corresponding author and all coauthors. Failure to do so may significantly delay the progress of the manuscript. If this information changes at any time during the review process, you must notify the editor immediately.
Hard Copy
Provide four hard copies of the manuscript (one original hard copy of the manuscript and three duplicate manuscripts). Hard copies of the manuscripts must be double-spaced with one-inch margins and written on one side of the paper only (this includes foreign submissions). Do not justify the right margin. Endnotes, references, tables, and legends for illustrations must also be double-spaced. Begin each of the following sections on separate pages and in this order: title page, abstract, text, footnotes, references, individual tables, and legends for illustrations. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page through the legends page.
Computer Disk (Please review carefully)
At the time of final revision or upon acceptance, authors must provide a high-density 3.5 inch computer disk with the manuscript file in either Microsoft Word (version 5.0 or newer) or WordPerfect (version 5.0 or newer), using either a DOS Windows or a Macintosh system. Save without inline imported graphics or charts. Use no accessory programs such as automatic footnotes, etc. Tables may be saved in word processing files or supplied in original Excel files. Label the disk with manuscript title, author's name, and the program used. The final disk you submit must exactly match the final copy of your manuscript.
Title Page
The title page must include a) the title of the article, which should be concise but informative; b) first name, middle initial, and last name of each author, with the highest academic degree(s), and, if applicable, Board certification; c) name of the facility or institution at which the work was done; d) complete address of institution(s) including zip code; e) number of words in the manuscript.
Abstract
An abstract of no more than 100 words preceding the article must accompany the manuscript. The abstract must be a factual (not descriptive) summary of the work done.
Subheadings
Subheadings to guide the reader must be used in the text. The format can be flexible but could include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. The author's style will be respected; however, writing should conform to acceptable English usage and syntax, and the Journal's style preference will be observed.
Illustrations, Photographs, and Tables
All illustrations, photographs, and tables must be cited in the text in consecutive order. Legends must be provided for each. Legends and tables must be typewritten and double-spaced on a separate sheet. All captions can be written on the same sheet. Tables must be numbered consecutively and have a brief title. Please make tables concise and comprehensive to the reader without reference to the text. Tables must be self-explanatory and should supplement, not duplicate, the text. For footnotes to tables, use the following symbols in this sequence: *,?, ?, ?, \ , ? #, **, ††, ?The editor may request that tables of backup data too extensive to be published be made available by the author. When submitting figures on disk, a set of four hard copies of all figures must be included. Illustrations submitted on disk must be in TIFF formats, with black and white saved at a resolution of 300 dpi or higher and color saved at a resolution of 400 dpi or higher. If supplying laser copies of line art, print the copy as large as possible on 8.5 x 11 inch sheets.
Photographs
Color or black-and-white photographs must be submitted in four complete sets. Color will be used when possible. Glossy print photographs (5 x 7 inches) are preferred. Please do not send original artwork, X-ray films, Xerox copies, slides, or drawings. Do not glue, paper clip, or tape photographs to paper or cardboard. The back of each photograph must be labeled with the photograph number as it appears in the text, an arrow indicating orientation, and the name of the article. Do not list any author name(s) on the back of photographs. Do not write directly on the back of the photographs. Crop marks should be indicated on a tissue overlay only. Details must be noted with an arrow stenciled through the photograph. Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers, magnification, and identification of stain used. Use cardboard inserts to protect the figures in the mail.
Camera-Ready Art: For photographs or line art only--figures must not have any items that are screened (ie, appearing as shades of gray or as dot matrix).
Abbreviations and Symbols
Standard abbreviations and symbols are used in accordance with the CBE Style Manual of the Council of Biology Editors. All dosages must be expressed in metric units and with specific time intervals.
Endnotes
Endnotes must be cited by superscript, lowercase letters arranged alphabetically. Products and equipment should be identified by chemical or generic names. Trade names may be identified in an endnote along with name and address of the manufacturer. Do not use software programs that create automatic endnotes.
References
References must be numbered consecutively according to their citation in the text. Abbreviations for journals should be those listed in Index Medicus. In general, references should not exceed 20 in number. Please see Examples of References.
Final Proofs
All accepted manuscripts are subject to copyediting and editorial revisions, but the author(s) remain responsible for the statements in the work, including editorial changes and accuracy of references. The corresponding author will receive a page proof for review. If your address changes after time of acceptance, you must notify the Journal directly of your current address in order to receive your page proof. Please limit acknowledgments to doctors or organizations that have contributed to the study in a major way. These acknowledgments, including "personal communications" and "unpublished observances," should be listed at the end of the article (after endnotes but before the references).
Reprints
Reprints may be ordered directly from the printer at the time that page proofs of the manuscripts are reviewed by the author(s). An order form for this purpose is enclosed with the page proof. Authors do not receive complimentary copies of the issue in which their article appears. Single copies of the Journal are $22.50. Nonmember subscriptions are available for $107 per year in the US and Canada and for $127 to other countries. Please send subscription requests to the American Animal Hospital Association, PO Box 150899, Denver, CO 80215-0899.
Unused Manuscripts
Unused manuscripts will be returned. Manuscripts accepted for publication will not be returned.
