Journal of Radiation Research
Instruction for Authors
April, 2007
1. General:
Journal of Radiation Research (JRR) is the official journal of The Japan Radiation Research Society (JRRS), and is covered in the Current Contents and Science Citation Index. Manuscripts must be an original article, submitted only to JRR, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication, nor in press elsewhere. Members and non-members of JRRS are encouraged to submit manuscripts in English.
2. Code of Ethics:
Authors are required to follow the ethical procedures in their countries when human or animal subjects are involved in their research. In the case of reports involving human subjects, the authors should assure in the manuscript either that the study has been reviewed and approved by the ethics committee in their institution or that the anonymity of subjects are preserved. The Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki) represents a minimal requirement. When experimental animals are used, the authors should assure in the manuscript that the studies have been reviewed and approved by the committee that oversees the ethics of research involving the use of animals and the welfare of the animals.
3. Article Categories:
The journal publishes the following article categories. All manuscripts will be reviewed by following selected fields: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Epidemiology, Experimental Radiotherapy, and Physics. The Biology field will be split into following sub-fields: Adaptive response, Apoptosis, Bystander effect, Chromosome, DNA damage, Embryonic effect, Gene expression, Genetics, Genomic instability, Hyperthermia, Immunology, Low-dose or -dose rate, Mutation, Normal tissue effect, Oxygen effect, Protector, Repair, Sensitivity, Sensitizer, Signaling, Transformation and Cancer, and Others.
(i) Regular Paper:
Article of original and novel scientific studies that relating to research on radiation. The manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: i) Title page, ii) Abstract, iii) Introduction, iv) Materials and Methods, v) Results, vi) Discussion, vii) Acknowledgments, and viii) References. The usual articles consists 6-10 printed pages.
(ii) Short Communication:
This section includes either brief reports dealing with new methods and techniques or a short manuscript describing results obtained in selected experiments. Article should not exceed 4 printed pages. Papers to this category may process faster than the other categories.
(iii) Technical Report:
The articles are short (usually no more than 4 printed pages) scientific work that introduces novel skills
(iv) Review:
The articles are usually invited, and should cover recent advances in radiation research. The manuscript should be set up to exceed more than10 printed pages.
(v) Topical Review:
The articles should be brief review of topical interests, generally including references earlier than the past 5 years. Short reviews are either invited or volunteered, and should not exceed a maximum of 5 printed pages.
(vi) Award Article:
The articles are invited reviews (or research articles) by awardees of the JRRS Distinguished Scientist Award or the JRRS Young Investigator Award.
(vii) Miscellaneous:
JRR may add another categories than above listed such as Letter to Editor, Technical Report, Erratum, and so on.
4. Preparation of manuscripts
Use A4 (210 x 297 mm2) paper with 25 mm margin on all around, and use 11 points ¡°Times New Roman¡± characters. Do not use country (language) specific 2-byte characters. Especially, be careful for invisible characters such as ¡°space¡±. Each page should consist of approximately 30 lines, with consecutive page numbers starting from the abstract page, and line numbers refreshing at the top of each page to make easy to indicate the location in comments and/or suggestions of reviewers. One printed page without figures and tables consists approximately 1,000 words.
Title page:
Title page must include i) Title not exceeding 40 words, ii) List of Authors in full name (first name in small capital except first letter and family name all in capital), iii) Institution(s) for all the authors, iv) Running title not exceeding 40 characters, v) 3-5 Keywords, and vi) numbers of Text pages, Figures and Tables in the manuscript.
Manuscript body:
Regular papers usually include: i) Abstract, ii) Introduction, iii) Materials and Methods, iv) Results, v) Discussion, vi) Acknowledgments, and vii) References. For short communications, the results and discussion can be assembled into one chapter as Results and Discussion. The Abstract not exceeding 250 words must consist of a single paragraph including purpose, materials and methods, results, and conclusion in clear and short sentences.
Please insert figures or tables at each approximate location in the text. If inserting the items in the text is difficult, indicate the locations in the text, written separately in one page with the caption, and put it at the end of the manuscript. At uploading the document, merge all the pages into a single file. Separate figures or pictures may require by our printing office at the printing after acceptance.
If the authors are not native English speakers, a review of the linguistic style by a native speaker is recommended before submission.
Figures and Tables:
Figures and Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, e.g., Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Table 1. They should be designed to fit and to be clearly visible in the printed page within single column (~8.5 cm) or double columns (~17.5 cm) width. Figures in printing quality are not required at reviewing process, and we strongly suggest the manuscript in a reduced file size (2 Mb or smaller). Heading and captions should be written on the same page to each figure or table, and it should be self-explanatory. Color plates can be accepted but cost expensive. Photographs and/or figures that require a higher resolution may be asked later at printing.
References:
References should be cited numerically as they appear in the text. Full citations are required. Typical reference forms are:
1. Niwa, O., Fan. Y.J., Numoto, M., Kamiya K., and Kominami, R. (1996) Induction of a germline mutation at a hypervariable mouse minisatellite locus by 252Cf radiation. J. Radiat. Res. 37: 217-224.

5. Submission
All manuscripts must be submitted through the JRR Web Contribution System operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency <http://ess.jstage.jst.go.jp/contrib/JRR/initialsubmission>. The electric contribution system is used for all the processes throughout the manuscript submission, reviewing, and it¡¯s publication. The detail of the submission process and required data is indicated in APPENDIX.
Submit your manuscript with a single (include text, tables, and figures) file written by Microsoft WordR and saved as document or rich text file (.doc or .rtf), together with a portable document format (.pdf) file generated by the Adobe Acrobat DistillerR. We strongly suggest submitting with both the files because it may be helpful for reviewing and for the backup in case of trouble. Authors can access our submission site directly or through the JRR or the JRRS home page.
Animated or very fine pictures, sounds, data tables or computer codes that may be important or useful but not printable on the paper may be published as electric appendix file only in web version of JRR.
5. Page Charge and Reprints:
We charge JPY 5,000 per one printed page for all articles to the corresponding author. In addition to the page charge, excess color charge (JPY 30,000 per one color page) is required for color printing.
Thirty non-covered reprints will be sent to the corresponding author (only for JRRS member) without charge. However, all can download any JRR articles free from the JRR browse site, and can print it with your PC. Charge for excess reprints depends on the number of pages of the article and number of copies ordered (most case, roughly JPY 20,000 for 100 copy). All charges will be asked at proof reading.
For JRRS members, the page charge will be reduced. The reduce rate corresponds to the duration of membership, and it will be reduced every 10 % for every year up to the maximum of 50 %. Page charge of an article to the corresponding author who has affiliate JRRS in 2005 and accepted JRR in 2006 will be reduced 10 %, for instance. This reduction will be effective for the manuscript printed after Vol. 47 (3).
6. Compliance:
The manuscript is original, has not already been published in a journal and is not currently under consideration by another journal. Submission of this manuscript has been approved by all the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out. All the authors have agreed to the content of this paper. Authors agree to the ethical procedures in their countries when human or animal subjects are involved in their research. When the manuscript will accepted, copyright, right of publication, right of reproduction and public token of all articles printed and published in the Journal of Radiation Research lies with The Japan Radiation Research Society (JRRS). The author will pay the page charge and reprint fee as informed above. The agreement between JRRS and the submitter (corresponding author) represents the all authors will finish at the process (check ¡°yes¡± of ¡°Compliance of Instruction¡±) in the manuscript submission process.
