About the journal

TopAims and Scope

Geografiska Annaler, Series B, is a prestigious and international journal publishing articles covering all theoretical and empirical aspects of human and economic geography. The journal has no specific regional profile but some attention is paid to research from the Nordic countries, as well as from countries around the Baltic Sea.

Also published by Blackwell Publishing is Geografiska Annaler, Series ATogether these journals publish articles covering all theoretical and empirical aspects of physical (Series A) and human (Series B) geography.  Although published in English, papers still retain a Scandinavian touch.

Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines

General
The editors of Geografiska Annaler Series B seek to publish meritorius articles that will interest a large number of geographers. Papers accepted for publication in the journal must adhere to a high standard of scholarship and focus on topics of significance to human geography.

There are two ways to submit a paper:
(1) Electronic submission: please make sure that the paper meets the journal's style guidelines and then send preferably in PDF format attached to an email to Orjan.Sjoberg@hhs.se and Cc. to gab@humangeo.su.se

(2) Postal submission: please make sure that the paper meets the journal's style guidelines and then send three hard copies to Örjan Sjöberg, Stockholm School of Economics, P.O. Box 6501, SE-113 83 Stockholm, Sweden.

Exclusive Licence Form
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material.  (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright  in such cases does not need to  be assigned).  After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details).  To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here

Typescripts

Typescripts must be double spaced with wide margins and clearly typed on one side of the paper only. Typescripts should be set out in the manner of recent issues of Geografiska Annaler, Series B. The title page, abstract, references, notes, captions and tables should be typed double spaced on separate sheets. Papers are submitted anonymously to referees, therefore they should be headed with title only and not the name of the author. An article should normally not exceed 10,000 words but longer manuscripts are welcome in the case of work of extraordinary merit. Authors can submit their manuscripts using either US or UK spelling.

Title page
A separate title page should include the title, the name and email address of the authors as they wish them to appear, including their academic and/or professional affiliation, postal address, institutional website address and telephone number.

Abstract
Each manuscript should be accompanied by an abstract not exceeding 250 words. The abstract should summarize the purpose, theory, methods and major findings of the paper.

Headings
The author should clearly indicate the desired levels of headings. Only three levels are accepted. First level headings are typed in all capitals on a separate line. Second level headings are typed on a separate line in lower case letters and initial capitals while third level headings are typed on the same line as the text, separated by a full stop and underlined.

Illustrations
Photocopies or glossy black-and-white prints of illustrations must be submitted in duplicate with all papers of the size at which the author wishes them to appear. The maximum size of single paged maps in Geografiska Annaler Series B is 14x18 cm (preferably not exceeding 13x17 cm) and the column width for smaller illustrations is 68 mm.
The titles of maps should not be given on the drawings. Figure numbers should be pencilled lightly on the back. After a paper has been accepted for publication, the author must submit the originals of all illustrations. Diagrams must be of a professional quality and prepared in dense black ink on a good quality surface. A suitable scale of originals is about 1.5-2 times the final printing size. Consider the reduction when deciding the size of symbols, letters and lines.
Photographs should be submitted as glossy prints, 1-1.5 times the final printing size.
The approximate positions of the figures in the text should be marked in the margin of the typescript.
Original illustrations will not be returned unless specifically required.

Captions
Captions must be typed double spaced on separate sheets. Figures and photographs are numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers (Figure 7 etc.). All are referred to as "Figures".

Tables
Tables must be typed double spaced on separate sheets, using few horizontal rules and no vertical rules. Tables are numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (Table 3 etc.). Titles, row and column headings should be concise but as informative as possible. Each table should be discussed in the text but readers should be able to understand tables without reference to the text.

Equations
If at all necessary in the text, equations should be numbered consecutively with bracketed Arabic numerals in the right hand margin. Authors must provide instructions in the margin for any special type face required (e.g. bold or italic) where the symbols occur in the text. Careful attention must be paid to sub- and superscript symbols, and upper and lower case letters.

Measurements
Measurements must all be given in the S I metric system. In exceptional cases, other measurements may be allowed in brackets. Abbreviations do not take a plural form and are not followed by a full stop.

Notes and references
Authors may choose one of two systems:

1) The "Harvard" system in which authors' names (no initials) and dates (and specific pages, only in the case of quotations) are given in the main body of the text, e.g. (Hägerstrand, 1953, p. 151). References are listed alphabetically at the end of the paper under the heading REFERENCES.

2) The "Oxford" system in which superscript numbers are inserted in the text, e.g.: .....as has been demonstrated by Harvey4.....; and referred to in numerical order at the end of the paper under the heading NOTES.

Footnotes must be restricted to a mimimum, normally the material can be incorporated in the text.

References in both systems should be set out as follows, with double spacing for all lines:

Papers: HARVEY, D . (1978): 'Urbanization under capitalism: a framework for analysis', International Journal of Urban and Regional Research 2: 101-131.

Books: HÄGERSTRAND, T (1953): Innovationsförloppet ur korologisk synpunkt. Gleerups, Lund.

Other publications: When there is doubt (e.g. theses, occasional papers etc.) include all bibliographic details.

Chapters of books: WRIGLEY, E. A. (1979): 'A simple model of London's importance in changing English society and economy, 1650-1750', in PATTEN, J. (ed): Pre-Industrial England: Geographical Essays, Dawson, Folkestone.

Abbreviations for titles of periodicals are those sanctioned by the World List of Scientific Periodicals (4th edn). The name of the publisher and the place of publication should always be given when books are referred to.

Permissions
If previously published material of substantial extent is included in a manuscript, the author is obliged to obtain written permission from the copyright holder.

Reprints
Authors receive 30 reprints per article free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered at the galley proof stage.
