Instructions to Authors
General information
- Manuscripts for publication in Proceedings of the Japan Academy (PJA), Series B should be prepared and submitted according to the following instructions.
- PJA Series B publishes original articles, including short communications, and reviews in all fields of natural science except mathematics. Ten issues are published per year.
- Papers categories are the following:
Contributed papers: papers written by a Member (or Members) of the Japan Academy, including those co-authored by non-Members, and presented at a General Meeting. Communicated papers: papers written by non-Members and presented at a General Meeting by a Member. Edited papers: papers submitted directly to the Editorial Office of the PJA.
- Submitted manuscripts undergo the following procedures:
- Manuscripts will be reviewed by a responsible Member.
- "Accepted" manuscripts will be communicated by the Member at a General Meeting, which is held every month except July and August, and discussed. Then the manuscript will be officially accepted.
- After presentation at the General Meeting, the manuscript will be proofread twice, and will be published.
- Manuscripts may be submitted to either a) or b):

- Note the following points:
- Name, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author (and the author to whom proofs should be sent) should be included.
- In principle, all copies of the manuscript, including figures and tables, shall not be returned to the author.
- Two complete sets of manuscripts, figures and tables are required.
- Manuscripts must be accompanied by a computer disk (i.e. floppy disk, MO, CD-R/RW) containing the final text. Use the following file formats: text, Microsoft Word, TeX source File. Submit digital figures only if the Academy requested.
- Authors are provided with 50 reprints of each published paper free of charge. Additional reprints are available at the authors' expense. Reprint order forms will be sent to authors with their proof. Orders are accepted only on a yen basis.
- Color figures are published free of charge only when they are set within one printed page of the journal. Excess color figures can be printed at the expense of the author as follows:
- Approximately 80,000-90,000 yen per printed page.
- 2,400 yen per a figure if a printed page carries more than one color figure.
- Orders for more than 300 additional reprints can be accepted at the expense of the author.
Preparation of manuscript
- The recommended average length of a paper is 6 printed pages for an original article and 10 pages for a review article. Authors should avoid prolixity.
- The title page should carry the category (i.e. original article, review article), title, abstract (no more than 160 words), key words (up to 6), running title (no more than 70 characters including spaces), full name and address of all authors and corresponding author's names.
- Manuscript format should be as follows (refer to the recent issue of the Journal):

- Figures should be clear enough to be used as camera-ready at the desired printed size.
- If submission at final size is not feasible, indicate its desired printed size (cm) and the reduction (%). Numbers, letters and symbols should be large enough that they will be legible after reduction.
- Each figure should have a label pasted on its back indicating the first author's name, title of the manuscript (abbreviated if necessary), and figure number.
- The first and the last printed pages should not carry any figures.
- Please use capital letter for the first word of each phrase.
- Each table should be given a brief title which should not be a sentence.
- Use standard units of measurement.
- Acknowledgements should be placed after the text, before References.
- References should be cited in the text in numerical order as they appear in text.
- References should be written according former issues and following examples.

- For review articles, authors may also cite the title of the article in journals or books listed in the References.
