About the journal

Integral Equations and Operator Theory (IEOT) appears monthly and is devoted to the publication of current research in integral equations, operator theory and related topics with emphasis on the linear aspects of the theory. The journal reports on the full scope of current developments from abstract theory to numerical methods and applications to analysis, physics, mechanics, engineering and others. The journal consists of two sections: a main section consisting of refereed papers and a second consisting of short announcements of important results, open problems, information, etc.

Instructions to Authors

Preparation of the manuscript

  • Type the manuscript on A4 paper (for USA: 8.5 x 11) and leave margins of at least 25 mm (1 inch).
  • Use double-spacing and Times Roman 12 point throughout and type only on one side of the paper.
  • Number the pages consecutively, beginning with the title page.
  • Begin each of the following sections on separate pages: title page, text, acknowledgements, references, individual tables, and figure legends.
  • If English is not your native language, please have your manuscript corrected by a native English speaker.

Title page

Please include the following details on the title page:

  • title of the chapter
  • first name, middle initial and last name of each author
  • the institutional affiliation/address of each author, including city and zip-code.

Please also indicate on this page who the senior author is, or the person to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent, and include their fax and telephone numbers.

Text

Each contribution must be structured in a manner which is suited to its subject matter, and must be accompanied by a table of contents using the decimal classification system for headings, subheadings etc.
Please bear in mind that all contributions should be written in review style and not as research articles.
Please do not forget to introduce appropriate headings and subheadings into the text. The decimal numbering system should be used to number sections within the text (see Headings).

Illustrations

  • Preferred size = 9 x 13 cm (portrait) or 13 x 9 (landscape).
  • Please send one set of high-quality original figures (please note that photocopies are not suitable for reproduction!)
  • Line illustrations should be professionally drawn or laser printed; freehand or typewritten lettering is unacceptable.
  • Send sharp, glossy black and white photographic prints.
    • Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers.
    • Symbols, arrows or letters used in the photomicrographs should contrast with the background.
  • All figures will be reduced by at least 20%. Please take care that labelling is clear throughout the figure and that letters, numbers and symbols are of sufficient size that when reduced for publication each item will still be legible.
  • Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals according to the order in which they have first been cited in the text.
  • Each figure should have a label pasted on its back indicating the number of the figure, the author's name and the top of the figure.
  • Colour illustrations can only be included if the author is prepared to subsidize the cost of their reproduction. Please inform Birkhäuser well in advance if you plan to include colour illustrations in your chapter.
  • Figure legends should be submitted on a separate piece of paper. When symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend. Explain the internal scale and identify methods of staining in photomicrographs.
  • If a figure has been published elsewhere, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder.

Headings

The decimal numbering system should be used to number sections within the text.
e.g.

1 Introduction

2 Airway structure and function in non-human primates

2.1 Clinical features of asthma

Keywords

With the first proofs you will receive an additional copy of your chapter in which you will be asked to highlight the keywords you would like to have included in the subject index.

Tables

  • Type each table on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Number each table consecutively with Arabic numerals in the order of appearance in the text.
  • Supply a brief title for each and place explanatory matter in the footnotes.
  • Give each column a short or abbreviated heading.
  • Explain in footnotes all non-standard abbreviations used in the table.
  • Please indicate where tables should be placed within the text.
    • If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge fully.

Trademarks

Trademarks should be indicated by first letter capitalization. Please ensure that product names are spelt correctly.

Units of measurement

  • Measurements of length, height, weight, and volume should be recorded in metric units (meter, kilogram or litre) or their decimal multiples.
  • Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius.
  • Blood pressures should be given in millimetres of mercury.
  • Units and numbers should be separated by a space, except for temperatures which should be written with no space, as follows: 36C.
  • All hematologic and clinical chemistry measurements should be reported in the International System of Units (SI). Editors may request that alternative or non-SI units be added by the authors before publication.

References

  • Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text.
  • Identify references in the text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in square brackets (e.g. 15).
  • Use the style of the examples below.
    • These are based, with slight modifications, on the formats used by the U.S. National Library of Medicine in «Index Medicus».
    • Consult «List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus», published annually as a separate publication by the library and as a list in the January issue of «Index Medicus».
  • Try to avoid using abstracts as references. «Unpublished observations» and «personal communications» may not be used as references, although references to written, not oral, communications may be inserted (in parentheses) in the text.
  • Include among the references papers accepted but not yet published;
    • designate the journal and add «In press».
    • Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be cited in the text as «unpublished observations» (in parentheses).

Examples of correct forms of references are given below:

Checklist

Before submitting your manuscript, please take a moment to check the following:

  • Is the text complete?
  • Are all the figures and tables included?
  • Are the references complete and in the correct format?
  • Have you obtained the necessary permissions for illustrations and tables?

Your compliance with the instructions outlined above is much appreciated, and will greatly assist Birkhäuser in the preparation of your manuscript for publication.
