About the journal
Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications
Physica A publishes research in the field of statistical mechanics and its applications. Statistical mechanics sets out to explain the behaviour of macroscopic systems by studying the statistical properties of their microscopic constituents. Applications of the techniques of statistical mechanics are widespread, and include applications to physical systems such as solids, liquids and gases; applications to chemical and biological systems (colloids, interfaces, complex fluids, polymers and biopolymers, cell physics); and other interdisciplinary applications to for instance biological, economical and sociological systems.

Instructions to Authors
Submission of papers Manuscripts, including reproducible figures should be sent in triplicate directly to one of the Editors or Advisory Editors with whom the author can communicate efficiently or whose expertise covers the content of the paper. The addresses of Advisory Editors are given in the instructions to authors, which is published in the first issue of each volume, and is also available at http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/physa.
Upon receipt of a paper by one of the Advisory Editors or Editors the author will receive an acknolwledgement of receipt. In case the manuscript cannot be handled by the (Advisory) Editor to whom the manuscript has been submitted, it will be forwarded to one of the Editors. In this case the author will be informed, on the "acknowledgement of receipt" form, who will handle the paper. After refereeing, the manuscript will be finally judged by one of the Editors who, contrary to the Advisory Editors, has the right to accept or reject a paper. Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language without the consent of the Publisher. The mastercopy and original drawings will be returned to the authors in case their paper is not accepted for publication. In case their paper is accepted, the original drawings will be returned after publication. Authors are requested to send an electronic version of the accepted manuscript (preferably encoded in LaTeX). The final, revised version of the article needs to be sent to the Editor or directly to the Publisher by e-mail or on diskette (allowed formats 3.5 inch or 5.25 inch MS-DOS, or 3.5 inch Macintosh) to the address below. Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the Editor are permissible without the prior and explicit approval by the Editor. Such changes should be clearly indicated on an accompanying printout of the file. The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailed instructions to authors) can be obtained using anonymous FTP from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network(CTAN), or from the Publisher.
Manuscript preparation All manuscripts should be written in good English. The paper copies of the text should be prepared with double line spacing and wide margins, on numbered sheets.
Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Article title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, PACS codes and keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables.
Corresponding author. The name, complete postal address, telephone and fax numbers and the e-mail address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the manuscript.
Classification codes/keywords. Please supply one to four classification codes (PACS-1996 and/or MSC) and up to six keywords of your own choice that describe the content of your article in more detail.
References References to other work should be consecutively numbered in the text using square brackets and listed by number in the Reference list. Please refer to the more detailed instructions for examples.
Illustrations The publisher welcomes electronic graphics accompanying accepted manuscripts. Illustrations should also be submitted in triplicate: one master set and two sets of copies.
The line drawings in the master set should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black india ink, with careful lettering, large enough (3-5 mm) to remain legible after reduction for printing.
The photographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted unless part of a composite figure. Any scale markers should be inserted on the photograph, not drawn below it.
Colour plates. Figures may be published in colour, if this is judged essential by the Editor. The Publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information is available from the Publisher and the full instructions to authors.
After acceptance Notification. You will be notified by the Editor of the acceptance of your article and invited to supply an electronic version of the accepted text, if this is not already available.
Copyright transfer. You will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. Proofs. About 4-6 weeks after acceptance page proofs are sent out to authors in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. Please note that the proofs have been proofread by the Publisher and only a cursory check by the author is needed; we are unable to accept changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript at this stage. In order to guarantee the fastest possible production times, the proofs must be returned within 48 hours after receipt, preferably by fax. If no reply is received from the author, the Publisher assumes that there are no further corrections to be made and will proceed with publication of the article.
Author benefits No page charges. Publishing in Physica A is free.
Free offprints. The corresponding author will receive 25 offprints free of charge. The Publisher will supply an offprint order form for ordering any additional paid off prints.
Discount. Contributors to Elsevier Science journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier Science books.
Contents Alert. Physica A is included in Elsevier's pre-publication service Contents Alert.
Article tracking. Authors can keep track of the process of their accepted article and set up e-mail alerts, informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway (http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/physa)
