About the journal

The Journal of Elasticity was founded in 1971 by Marvin Stippes (1922¨C1979), its main purpose being to report original and significant discoveries in elasticity. Such results are reported as full research papers or research notes. Well documented historical essays are also published. Materials which prove effective in teaching are published as classroom notes. Original contributions in the broader areas of mechanics, mechanics of materials, and engineering sciences that have a bearing on developments in elasticity are welcomed.

Guidance principles for content are to be found in the current interests of the Editorial Board as they relate to elasticity.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Kluwer Academic Publishers request the submission of manuscripts in paper and electronic format (compulsory). The preferred storage medium for your files is a 3.5 inch diskette, zip?disk or CD-ROM. Please label disks with your name, journal name, short manuscript title, file name(s), the software format, and the operating system used. Please always retain a backup copy of your files. After revision, make absolutely sure that you send the latest version of your manuscript (including tables and figures) in paper and electronic format.

We prefer manuscripts submitted in word processing packages such as MS Word, Rich Text Format, WordPerfect, plain Text or LaTeX. The Kluwer LaTeX class file can be downloaded from: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/. If you are not familiar with TeX/LaTeX we ask that you submit your article in a common word processor format. PDF is not a recommended format.

For the purpose of reviewing, articles for publication should be submitted as hard-copy printout (4-fold) and on diskette to:

The Journals Editorial Office
Journal of Elasticity
Kluwer Academic Publishers
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands
Fax: [+31]-78-6576555

You may request that a particular Editorial Board member coordinate the review.

Hard-copy figures

Original or good quality printouts of all figures should be submitted with the manuscript. Computer generated printouts should be flawless and on good quality paper. Non-computer generated line figures should be drawn with Indian ink on white matt paper or tracing paper. Photographs should be in black-and-white on glossy paper. If a figure is to be in colour (author's expense), please supply the highest quality possible so that the figure can be scanned. Slides, glossy photos and computer generated printouts on glossy photo quality paper are acceptable. On the reverse side of each figure, the name of the (first) author and the figure number should be written in pencil; the top of the figure should be clearly indicated.

Electronic figures

You should supply the electronic versions of your figures. We prefer figures in TIFF, EPS, PS, PDF and Microsoft?Office format. Be aware that we may not be able to use other file formats and that the hard copy may be scanned instead. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica. Figures should be saved in separate files. The figure legends should be included in the text file.

Language

We appreciate any efforts that you make to ensure that the language is corrected before submission. This will greatly improve the legibility of your paper if English is not your first language.

Manuscript Preparation

The first page of the manuscript must contain the title, author's name, affiliation with e-mail address (if available) and, if appropriate, a shortened title for the paper not exceeding 45 characters for use in the running heads. The manuscript should include a short abstract of between 100 and 300 words, the relevant AMS Mathematics Subject Classifications (2000) and a list of key words which are comprehensive and subject specific. Six to ten key words are sufficient to cover the major subjects of the submitted paper. General terms are not necessary as key words, as they have little use as information retrieval tools.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and used only when essential.

References

References will appear numbered within square brackets in the text, and listed at the end of the article without square brackets. Authors are encouraged to prepare their papers in this formwith references arranged either in alphabetical and chronological order or in order of citation.

A journal reference should comprise initials, author name(s), full title of paper, AMS abbreviated name of journal, volume number, year of publication, and first and last pages, e.g.,

[1.] R.S. Marlow, On the stress in an internally constrained elastic material. J. Elasticity 27 (1992) 97-131.
[2.] M.E. Gurtin and P. Podio-Guidugli, Configurational forces and the basic laws for crack propagation. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 44 (1996) 905-927.

A book reference should comprise initials, author name(s), full title of book, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, e.g.,

[3.] A.J.M. Spencer, Deformations of Fibre-Reinforced Materials. Clarendon Press, Oxford (1972).

An edited volume reference should comprise initials and name(s) of author(s), title of paper, name(s) of editor(s), full title of book, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, inclusive page numbers, e.g.,

[4.] B.A. Bilby and J.D. Eshelby, Microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals. In: H. Liebowitz (ed.), Fracture: An Advanced Treatise, Vol. I. Academic Press, New York (1968) pp. 99-182.

Figures

All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures should be labeled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.

Tables

Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.

Proofs

The author will receive two sets of page proofs along with an annotated copy of the manuscript and is requested to return one, corrected proof with the manuscript to the Publisher without delay. In those cases where proofs are not returned within a reasonable period of time (more than three months), the Publisher will read them and publish without the author's comments. Second proofs will be read only by the Publisher to ensure that author corrections have been made. Any changes to the originally submitted text at this stage should be communicated to the executive Editor and not to the Publisher. No new material should be added at proof stage. Extensive alterations to the text (including references) and/or illustrations, not resulting from the typesetting, will be considered as a revised version and may be approved only by an Editor.

Offprints

The author will receive, without charge, 50 offprints of the article. Additional offprints may be ordered when the corrected proof is returned, via offprint order forms supplied by the Publisher.

Copyright

The communicating author of each paper accepted for publication will receive a Consent-to-Publish/Copyright form to sign and return to the Publisher as a prerequisite for publication. This form provides an opportunity for an author to retain copyright if so desired. However, authors are advised to assign copyright to the Publisher for reasons explained on the form.

Page Charges and Colour Figures

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions except for colour pages. The author will be contacted regarding costs and invoicing if the manuscript includes colour figures.
