Instructions to Authors
1. Publication Policy
When an author submits a manuscript for consideration, it is assumed that it has neither been published previously nor is under consideration for publication elsewhere.
No scientific paper shall be published until it has been reviewed and accepted by at least two referees who have expertise in the field. All papers must be approved by Council and normally papers will be presented at a meeting of the Society.
Upon publication, copyright of the paper (including illustrations) is held by the Society. Any subsequent publication of any material shall be by written permission of the Council.
Ten free copies of their paper are provided for authors who are members of the Society. Additional copies may be purchased.
All papers submitted for publication shall be subject to control of the Editor. Except for reproduction in colour, or illustrations larger than page size, there is no charge for publication of manuscripts although authors are urged to seek subsidies to help defray costs of publication. However, a contribution towards cost may be required, at the discretion of the Editor, for author-generated corrections at proof stage. Authors are urged to read the following instructions carefully and to consult papers similar to their own in recent volumes of the Transactions.
2. Submission
Papers should be generated by computer and printed on one side only of good quality A4 paper with double spacing and margins at least 3 cm wide.
The original and two duplicate copies of the manuscript and two photographic copies or good photocopies (reduced to printing size - see below) of all illustrations (photographs, line and half-tone drawings) must be submitted.
The final corrected paper must be submitted on disk along with an original and one duplicate hard copy.
3. Manuscript
Papers must be as concise as possible consistent with scientific accuracy; historical introductions and review material should be kept to a minimum. Grammar, spelling and punctuation should be checked carefully and uniformity of presentation within a paper must be observed.
Format. Page 1 of the manuscript should be headed Transactions of the Royal Society of S. Aust. (200 ), 000 (), 00-00. The title of the paper and the name(s) of the author(s) should be in capitals. A short summary (giving the main results) must be included, with the author(s) name(s), the year of publication, the title of the work and Trans R. Soc. S. Aust. 000 (), 00-00, heading the summary. The summary should be followed as appropriate by sections entitled 'Introduction,' 'Materials and Methods,' 'Results,' 'Discussion' or 'Conclusions,' 'References,' and 'Figure legends'. Each table should be typed on a separate page and formatted as e.g. Table 1. Measurements of Ascaris spp. There should be no vertical lines in tables. Tables should be kept to a minimum and should be designed for column or page width.
Key Words. A list of key words should be provided at the end of the Summary.
Running Head. A condensed title of no more than 50 characters must be provided.
The metric system. (SI units) must be used throughout.
Underlining. Only words to be printed in italics may be underlined. Italics in the manuscript are preferred to underlining.
Headings. Headings within a paper will be printed in general in the following order (but not all necessarily used) - caps and lower case, bold; caps and lower case italics; caps and small caps, roman; small caps, roman; caps and lower case, roman.
Taxonomic papers must follow the International Codes of Botanical and Zoological Nomenclature. Lists, such as 'Specimens Examined', should be as concise as possible; the following order is recommended: herbarium or museum number, locality, State (abbreviated), collector , date (e.g. 24. viii. 1994 or Jan. 1994). Descriptions must be in telegraphic style.
Geological papers must follow the Australian Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature and should cite geological maps in the text with italics for the 1:63 630 series and full caps for the 1:250 000 series. See below for references to such maps.
Footnotes should be kept to a minimum and should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper.
Brief Communications should follow the format used in recent volumes of the Transactions.
4. Illustrations
All illustrations, whether line or half-tone drawings, photographs or maps are treated as figures, numbered consecutively and placed throughout the text. Illustrations should have the author's name, the title of the paper and figure number in soft pencil on the back.
Sizes. Figures will be printed at column width (6.7 cm) or page width (14 cm) with a maximum depth of 20 cm (including any captions below illustrations). Authors should design illustrations to meet these dimensions.
Line drawings should be in Indian ink on high quality drawing paper or tracing linen. All lettering on figures must be carefully inserted by a lettering device with a minimum size of 1 mm when reduced to printing size. Scale bars must be included on all figures. Line drawings should be carefully planned so that, on reduction, they may be printed to a size appropriate to the journal. Computer-generated drawings are acceptable provided that they are of equivalent quality to Indian ink drawings.
Photographs should be grouped for page size and arranged on flexible card or paper; they are reproduced best at this size. Tone range in all photographs of a group should be similar, they should show good contrast and detail and should be printed on glossy paper. Letraset labels and scale bars should be used.
Supply of illustrations on computer disk. Illustrations can be supplied on the following media: floppy, 100Mb Zip or CD. Preferred format is: Macintosh Pagemaker or Quark. Alternatively illustrations will be accepted on PC disk in TIFF or EPS format. Half-tone illustrations must be supplied as original scans at 300dpi or higher.

In synonymies in taxonomic papers, references are given as, e.g., Smith 1984; 1987 i.e. with the two references separated by a semicolon or Smith 1987. Brown 1991 i.e. with the two references separated by a period.
Bibliographic references must give the title in full and follow the journal abbreviations in the "World List of Scientific Periodicals, London" (latest edition), in the following style: McEntee , J. C. (1991) Lake Frome (South Australia) Aboriginal trails. Trans R. Soc. S. Aust. 115, 199-205. Book references are given as: Tyler, M. J. (1989) "Australian Frogs" (Viking O'Neil, Melbourne). References to chapters in books are given as: Vinnikov, K. Y. (1991) Soil moisture content with global warming pp. 261-268 In Schlesinger, M. E. (Ed.) "Greenhouse-gas-induced climate change: a critical appraisal of simulations and observations" (Elsevier, Amsterdam). Geological maps are given as: Dalgarno, C. R. & Johnson, J. E. (1966) PARACHILNA map sheet, Geological Atlas of South Australia, 1:250 000 series. (Geol. Surv. S. Aust., Adelaide).
Multiple references to one author in one year are designated "a", "b", etc. Joint authors are connected by & both in the text and in the references. More than two authors are given as first author et al. in the text but all authors must be included in the references. Where the same journal or book occurs in consecutive references Ibid. is substituted for the name of the journal/book. References to unpublished works (theses, etc.) must be cited as footnotes.
