Instructions to Authors
GENERAL INFORMATION
Estudios Geológicos publishes original research papers as well as reviews on any subject dealing with the Earth Sciences. All submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two specialists on the subject of the work and also by the Editors who will decide on the acceptance to be published. Only works that are not published or being considered elsewhere will be accepted. Those manuscripts that do not comply with the norms presented below, may be returned to the authors to be modified accordingly.
SENDING MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts will be sent preferentially in electronic format by email to lgomez@mncn.csic.es. To prepare the electronic version of the manuscript, the text (including the main text, tables, figure captions and references) will be compiled into a single file in either MS-Word or RTF format. All the figures in final quality versions, will be provided in independent files in either of the following formats: CorelDraw, PDF or JPG. To complete the submission, it is allowed to send up to four email messages of less than 5 Mb each. If the manuscript is sent by postal mail, please send two complete copies of the manuscript. If possible, including an electronic version of the manuscript on a CD. The package should be sent to:
Secretaría de Estudios Geológicos Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (CSIC) José Gutiérrez Abascal, 2 28006 Madrid
TEXT PREPARATION
Accepted languages are Spanish, English and French. The text should be written with a Times or Arial font, 12 points size, double spaced, in A4 sized paper. Margins should be at least 3 cm on each side. The manuscript must be paginated. Please do not try to format the manuscript to resemble the appearance of the journal. Main sections in the text should be headed in bold and justified to the left margin. Second level sections should be headed in italics, and third level sections will use normal text, all left-justified. Do not number the sections. All manuscripts will start by a Title, the author’s names and their addresses including the email of the corresponding author, and an abstract. In addition to the title and abstract written in the language of the manuscript, an English version of both must be included as well. Those manuscripts written in English will also include a Spanish version of the Title and Abstract (non Spanish speakers can request to be helped by the Editors to prepare their Spanish version of the abstract). After each abstract, significant keywords will be included in the corresponding language.
FIGURES AND TABLES
Each figure (either photographs or line-drawings) should appear on independent pages and numbered following the order of citation in the text. Each figure must have an informative caption. These will be included into an independent section at the end of the manuscript and headed as “Figure Captions”. Tables should be included in separate pages, numbered following the order of citation in the text. They must include a brief and informative title and, if necessary, additional explanatory notes at the bottom.
REFERENCES
Bibliographic references cited in the text will be appended as a list at the end of the manuscript. References to other authors’ works in the text will include the last name of the author (without initials) and the year of publication (e.g., Benito, 1993). For two authors, their names will be separated by “&”. If there are more than two authors, the reference will include the last name of the first author followed by “et al.” in italics (e.g., Cañaveras et al., 1996). If necessary, a reference to a specific illustration, page etc can be included (e.g. Cebriá & López Ruiz, 1996, p. 1357, or Doblas et al., 1995, fig. 3). References to personal communications will be indicated as (Dimanche, per.comm. 1995). The list will be alphabetically ordered by the authors last name and then by chronological order. The papers with only one author, will appear before the multiauthor ones (if he/she is the first-signing author). The authors names will be indicated by their last name followed by a comma and the initials. Each author name will be separated of the following by “;”, except the last two which will be separated by “&”. Different structure of the citation will be applied to journal articles, books, chapters, Thesis, etc. Full names (not abbreviations) of the journals will be included in italics. EVALUATION PROCESS
Manuscripts that comply to the journal’s rules will be peer-reviewed by at least two specialists who will send a report concerning the scientific quality of the work, including a recommendation about its acceptation (with or without corrections) or its rejection. On the basis of these recommendations, the Editorial Committee will decide about the publication of the manuscript and will inform the author accordingly.

As soon as a work is accepted for publication, proof-reading samples will be sent to the corresponding author for typesetting correction. These must be returned within seven days. If not returned on time, the article may still be published declining any responsibility for errors that may persist. At present no free paper reprints are provided. If paper reprints are needed, they must be requested and paid in advance.
