Instructions to Authors
Style recommendations:
Consult the current issue of the Journal for style, headings and other conventions at http://www.abc.botanic.hr/index.php/abc/issue/current
The text file should be arranged as follows:
1) The title page should contain:
the full title (bold, lower case, font size 14, aligned left)
name(s) of (co)author(s) (i.e. Paul C. Konrads)
address(es) (aligned left),
corresponding author's e-mail address
proposed running title
an abstract of 20 lines which should summarize the major findings and conclusions
up to eight keywords (not phrases)
list all non-standard abbreviations in alphabetical order
2) The next pages should contain the text file divided into:
Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Table and figure captions, Tables, Figures.
Hierarchy of subsections in the text body must be clear.
First-order headings (e.g., Materials and methods) and second-order headings are in bold (e.g., Sampling procedure); third-order headings bold headers are in italics (Chlorophyll measurements).
References (of preferentially scientific, published papers) in the text should be cited according to the following examples: WRISCHER (1974), JONES and SMITH (1987), (JONES 1987a, b), JONES et al. (1986), WRISCHER (1974:55). Grouped text citations should be arranged from the earliest to the most recent year (e.g.: EVANS 1989, ALPHALO 1993), alphabetized by name within the same year.
Entries in the References section should be alphabetized by first author's last name or, if this is the same, by the last name of the second, third, etc. author, i. e.:
HATCH, M.J., MACEK, K., 1986...
HATCH, M.J., SMITH, H.B., 1985...
Citations of abstracts should be avoided. For publications in any language other than English, Spanish, French, German and Italian, the original title should be translated into English (stating the original language in brackets).
The styles below should be followed exactly for order of elements, capitalization, and punctuation.

Manuscripts should conform to standard rules of English grammar and style. In particular, a sentence should not start with a reference, but the point should be made and then the reference should be given. Also, sentences should not begin with Fig...shows... but the point should be made and the figure should then be stated in parentheses. Conciseness in writing is a major asset.
Formatting guidelines:
The word processing program should be Microsoft Word. The text should be typed using the font Times New Roman, size 12 points, and organized on A4 format (21 x 29.5 cm). Adjust indentation to 1 cm (i.e. first line of all paragraphs and hanging paragraphs of References). Do not use the space bar to make indents. An indent command should be used for this purpose. Input your text continuously, i.e. insert hard returns exclusively at the ends of paragraphs, headings etc. Use the automatic pagination function. Legends of each figure and table are part of the text and should be appended on a separate page. For both figures and tables, the desired placement should be marked in the text. Do not italicize common Latin words, abbreviations or phrases such as «et al.», «e.g.» or «in vivo». Do italicize the names of genes (e.g. Arpl gene), genera and species. Insert a space between mathematical symbols and numbers (i.e. 2 + 3 and 3 < 9). Use 12 °C never 12°C or 12° C. Do not insert a space in these cases: 6X and 12%.
Figures must be marked by Arabic numerals on the bottom. Please save computer graphics and photographic images as Tagged Image Format (tif) with a resolution of at least 600 dpi. Before submission, the size of figure files in tif format can be decreased using Lossless Compression (LZW) with Adobe Acrobat (by saving in Adobe Photoshop). Vector graphic (xls, cmx, eps, wmf) are acceptable. Tables should be prepared as Microsoft Word Tables. Each table and illustration should contain all the necessary information to be understood independently of the text. Lettering and identification marks should be clear and legible after reduction. Tables and figures should be incorporated at the end of the Word text file and submitted by the Online journal management system as “Original file”. In addition, tables and figures should be separately submitted as “Supplementary files”.
Subsequent submission of files should be done using URL number/Add supplementary files.
Original scientific papers submitted for publication are reviewed by two referees, active in the field the paper belongs to. Authors are requested to provide names and contact information (e-mail address) of two experts in the field as possible reviewers of their paper. The subject editor will try to use one reviewer from the list and to comply with any special requests. Only papers with favorable reports are accepted for publication. The acceptance of manuscripts for publication is decided by the Editor-in-Chief.
When the article is published the corresponding author will receive 20 offprints and the electronic reprint of the article (free of charge) in Adobe’s PDF format. Additional offprints may be ordered at cost price at the time when the proofs are returned
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
General manuscript requirements
Full-length papers
Manuscript typed single-spaced, 12-point font size
Text body is not justified on the right side.
Manuscript does not exceed 20 pages for full journal papers, or 8 pages for short communications.
References in text body are quoted with the author name/year system. The ampers neither ˝and˝ is not used between names.
Following title, names of authors are given by full name first, family name second, abbreviated middle name in between (i.e.: DAVID F. CROOT); full postal adress; e-mail adress of corresponding author; running title.
Abstract (not on separate page). Maximum of 200 words. Do not give authorities for species names in Abstract. Do not use phrases ˝is discussed˝ or ˝will be discussed˝ without indicating outcome of discussion. Abstract includes aims, results and conclusions.
Following Abstract list up to 8 keywords specific to the article.
List all non-standard abbreviations in alphabetical order.
After the Abstract, the text body is structured into Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements (if required) and References with content following the author guidelines.
All figures and tables are cited, in the correct order, in the text body.
Names are written in capitals.
All citations in the text body are in the list of references at the end.
Table and figure legends are listed following References.
All figure legends are ˝stand-alone˝, allowing interpretation with minimal reference to the text. Genus/species names in full, if appropriate, are mentioned in the legend immediately following the figure numbers.
Figures are numbered with Arabic numerals.
Graphs use cross-hatching or patterning instead of grey scales. Grey-scale definition is lost in printing.
Lettering on figures is consistent in font (Ariel) and size as these are not changed by the typesetters. Lettering always starts with a capital letter, thereafter only lower cases are used.
Figures are submitted as tif files or vector graphics (xls, cmx, eps, wmf).
All tables on separate pages with heading and footnotes and explanatory material.
Tables are numbered with Arabic numerals
Only SI units are used. Units of salinity are psu (not parts per thousand); ˝L˝ is used for liter, g L-1 is used for gram per liter.
Italics used for Latin words (though not for standard abbreviations like et al., i.e., ca., vs.).
List of references is formatted exactly according to the journal model shown in the latest Author Guidelines.
All references in the list are cited in the text body.
All species names are cited with authorities at first mention in the text (but not in the Abstract) or in a summarising table. Authors are requested to check for latest taxonomic changes.
At first mention of species within a new paragraph, full name of genus and species are given. Thereafter within paragraphs, the genus name may be abbreviated to a single letter.
˝Approximately˝ and ˝maximum˝ are not abbreviated.
The English has been checked by a native speaker (yes /no).
The latest ˝Instruction for authors˝ have been checked before submission.
The manuscript has been submitted using On-line system command «Uploading submission»; one Word file containing text, tables and figures (tables and figures should not be embedded within the text body). In addition, tables and original figure files have been uploaded as separate files using «Upload Supplementary files»
Short communications
Subdivided into Abstract, Keywords, list of non-standard Abbreviations, and a single section of main text without subdivision.
Experimental procedures described in legends to figures or footnotes to tables.
Otherwise, follow checklist for full-length communications.
Responsible authorship
It is the policy of Acta Botanica Croatica that authors must conform to standards of responsible authorship. All of the authors must accept responsibility for the entire content of the submitted manuscript, and provide their significant contributions to the work. Honorary authorship is strongly discouraged, i.e., authorship should not be awarded to people who made no intellectual contribution to the work, or who were not physically involved in conducting the research. Individuals who supported the research by providing laboratory space, equipment or financial support should be recognised in the Acknowledgements only.
