All Original and Case Report submissions are to be emailed and must include your cover letter addressed to Dr Prasad introducing yourself and your manuscript along with indicating the name of the journal that you are submitting to. Along with the cover letter, your manuscript and figures must be sent as an attached file labeled with the Corresponding Author's last name only in Word format to: pkrause@med.wayne.edu. Acceptable formats that can be used for Illustrations/Figures/Tables, etc..., are as follows: Adobe .pdf, Excel .xls, Powerpoint .ppt, Word, and/or Jpeg .jpg formats. Your complete submission will be printed and saved to diskette for you. No hard copies of your manuscript and/or figures/tables, etc..., will be necessary unless the publisher needs one at the time of publication which will be requested at galley proof time. However, please be sure to follow up with 3.5 diskette/CD of your manuscript which MUST be labeled with your assigned manuscript number. Unlabeled diskettes will not be kept.
You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt for your manuscript submission with your assigned manuscript number by email. Please refer to your assigned manuscript number for all future correspondence with our office.
Authors Form. This must be filled in, signed by each of the authors and sent along with your cover letter. A hard copy of this form filled in and signed by each of the authors must be mailed with your assigned manuscript number clearly listed on the top of the form with the first version of your manuscript. If revisions are requested, forms must be resent with your revised version of the manuscript. Your manuscript number must indicate the revised version. i.e. 03-033R1 on the top of your form.
DISCLOSURE STATEMENT. All authors must disclose any affiliations that they consider to be relevant and important with any organization that to any author’s knowledge has a direct interest, particularly a financial interest, in the subject matter or materials discussed. Such affiliations include, but are not limited to, employment by an industrial concern, ownership of stock, membership on a standing advisory council or committee, a seat on the board of directors, or being publicly associated with a company or its products. Other areas of real or perceived conflict of interest would include receiving honoraria or consulting fees or receiving grants or funds from such corporations or individuals representing such corporations. This requirement will apply to every sort of article submitted to the Journal, including original research, reviews, editorials, letters to the editor, and any others, and should be disclosed at the time of submission. The simplest remedy for conflict of interest is disclosure. In the Journal, disclosure will henceforth be achieved by the inclusion of a short footnote with each published article. This information will be held in confidence while the paper is under review. It will not be shared with peer reviewers, and it will not influence the editorial decision to accept or reject the manuscript. When an article is accepted for publication, the editors will usually discuss with the authors the manner in which such information is to be presented.
Review of Manuscripts. All submitted articles will be reviewed by the Editor and two or more referees. Authors may provide the Editor with a list of three to five potential reviewers. The decision to use these reviewers remains with the Editor. Final acceptance will be based on the priority score assigned to each manuscript.
Cover Letter. This must contain (1) complete title of the paper; (2) author's names; (3) complete journal name that you are submitting to; (4) complete name, address, phone, fax, and E-mail address of the corresponding author.
Title page. This must contain: (1) complete title of the paper; (2) author's name(s) must carry superscript number(s). The corresponding author should be indicated by an asterisk; (3) institutional affiliation(s) (at which the work was performed) must be listed at the departmental level. Each distinct affiliation should be listed as a separate entity, with a superscript number that links it to the individual author(s); (4) shortened title which does not exceed 40 characters, including spaces, to be used as a running head; (5) Two to six indexing words as used in the Index Medicus; (6) complete name, address, phone and fax numbers, E-mail address of the corresponding author; (7) all grant information should be provided in the following format: Contract grant sponsor:___________; Contract grant number:____________.
Abstract. This should be a factual condensation of the entire work, including a statement of its purpose, a clear description of the findings, including numbers, and finally a concise presentation of the conclusions. The abstract may not exceed 250 words.
Text. The text should follow the usual "Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions" format; and it must be written in a manner that will permit the reader to easily understand what was done, the reason for it, and the conclusions drawn from the work. If the work includes data derived from human subjects, a statement that informed, written consent was obtained is mandatory. If any photographs of human subjects are to appear, a copy of the signed consent form must accompany the manuscript. Use subheadings and paragraph titles whenever possible. Define unusual abbreviations initially, e.g., chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Abbreviate measurements (cm, ml) according to The Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, 5th Edition (available from the Council of Biology Editors, Inc., 11 South LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60603-1210). Place acknowledgments as the last element of the text, before references.
References. Reference should be made only to articles that are published or are in press. Unpublished results and personal communications should be cited parenthetically in the text. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references. In the text, references should be cited consecutively as numerals in parentheses. In the final bibliography, they should be in numerical order and should conform to Index Medicus style. For example:
Journal articles: 1. Kaplan R, DeLa Cadena, RA. Mechanism of the coagulopathy associated with acute promyelocytic Leukemia. Am J Hematol 1998;59:234-237.
Books: 2. Voet D, Voet JG. Biochemistry. New York: John Wiley & Sons; 1990. 1223 p.
Chapters in Books: 3. Gilmor ML, Rouse ST, Heilman CJ, Nash NR, Levey AI. Receptor fusion proteins and analysis. In: Ariano MA, editor. Receptor localization. New York: Wiley-Liss; 1998. p 75-90
Legends. A descriptive legend completes an illustration and permits it to be useful without the necessity of referring to the text. A legend must accompany each illustration and must define all abbreviations used therein. Legends must be typed double spaced on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
Tables. Tables must be self-explanatory and must not duplicate the text. Each must have a title and they should be numbered in order of appearance with Roman numerals, typed double spaced.
Illustrations. 4 sets of glossy black and white photographs 5" X 7" or 8" X 10" in size are preferred. Do not submit original recordings, graphs, radiographic plates, or art work. They will be requested at a later date if needed for publication. All lettering must meet professional standards (and must be legible after reduction in size); typewritten or hand-lettering is unacceptable. All illustrations must be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals. Identify each illustration on the back by affixing a gummed label on which is listed the number of the illustration, name of first author, title of manuscript, and an arrow indicating the top. All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. For best reproduction, bright clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well: please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Lisa Crumling at 717-632-3535, ext. 8169; email lcrumling@tsp.sheridan.com for further information.
Concise Reviews The purpose of a "Concise Review" is to provide practicing hematologists and those in training with a clear and up-to-date concept of a subject of current interest. It should be very informative, thoroughly referenced, and easily readable. The text should not exceed 4-5 journal pages in length, approximately 800 words per page. For information regarding the typing instructions and reference style, please refer to the instructions above. Concise Reviews must be sent to: John Foerster, MD, Associate Editor for Concise Review/American Journal of Hematology Director of Research St Boniface General Hosp Research Ctr Rm#RIOO3/351 Tache Ave Winnipeg, CANADA R2H 2S6 Ph 204-235-3206 fax 204-235-0793 email DSaurette@sbrc.ca.
Brief Reports, Letters to the Editor, and Correspondence These sections permit rapid publication of abbreviated communications in the field of hematology. Brief Reports may not exceed 750 words, 10 bibliographic references, and either one figure or concise table in the style of the Journal. Letters to the Editor should not exceed 500 words and five bibliographic references. A single concise figure or table may be included if it is essential to support the communication. Letters to the Editor are utilized to communicate a single novel observation or finding. Both Brief Reports and Letters may be used to communicate a laboratory observation, clinical experience, drug trial, or adverse effect. Correspondence is to be used to supplement or constructively comment on the content of a publication in the Journal and cannot exceed the restrictions for letters to the Editor. The Editor reserves the right to shorten text, delete objectionable comments, and make other changes to comply with the style of the Journal. Permission for publication must be appended as a postscript. Brief Reports, Letters to the Editor, and Correspondence must be sent to Jay Umbreit, MD, PhD, Professor of Hematology/Oncology, Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, 1365-B Clifton Road, Suite B4100, Atlanta, GA 30322, Phone: 404-778-4735; Fax: 404-778-5016; E-mail: jay_umbreit@emoryhealthcare.org.
Images In Hematology We believe that the discipline of hematology lends itself particularly well to visual case presentations. The purpose of this section of the Journal, therefore, is to present an interesting visual description of a defined hematological condition. The image may consist of a single photo or a series of photos that, when grouped together, give a visual description of the specific hematological entity. It is expected that the submitting authors(s) will supplement the visual "Image" with brief text as necessary to tell the full story. Whenever appropriate, we will publish the Images In Hematology section of the Journal in full color. Dr. Eugene P. Orringer serves as the Associate Editor for this section of the Journal. Therefore, all submissions as well as all correspondence regarding Images In Hematology must be sent to: Eugene Orringer, MD, Associate Editor for Images in Hematology/American Journal of Hematology University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 Phone: 919-966-2467 Fax: 919-966-1576 E-mail: epo@med.unc.edu.
Clinical Trials Where appropriate, clinical and epidemiological studies should be analyzed to see if there is an effect of gender or any of the major ethnic groups. If there is no effect, it should be so stated in the Results. All Manuscripts submitted to the American Journal of Hematology must be submitted solely to this Journal, may not have been published in any part or form in another publication of any type, professional or lay, and become the property of the publisher. Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, the author will be requested to sign an agreement transferring copyright to the publisher, who reserves copyright. No published material may be reproduced or published elsewhere without the written permission of the publisher and the author. The Journal will not be responsible for the loss of manuscripts at any time. All statements in, or omissions from, published manuscripts are the responsibility of the authors who will assist the editors by reviewing proofs before publication. Reprint order forms will be sent with the proofs.
Disk Submission Instructions Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy. The hard copy must match the disk.
The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).
Guidelines for Electronic Submission Text Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.
Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.
File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.
Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.
Illustrations All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.
Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.
Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.
Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.
File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).
Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
