About the journal

Health Care Management Review is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes papers that apply practical frameworks and principles to health care management. Articles address issues that are timely, interest researchers, inform future research, and affect how health care facilities are organized.

HCMR addresses the full range of challenges and concerns that busy health care managers and academics face every day. Written by leading health care executives and guided by a blue-ribbon panel of experts, HCMR presents:

  • High-level, reader-friendly content to support administrative practice decisions
  • Strategies for gaining market share including managing reimbursement, sustainable networks and partnerships, and joint ventures
  • Techniques to thrive amidst the health care workforce shortage, create a positive organizational culture, and motivate staff
  • Ideas to bridge the gap between clinical practice arenas and administration

Instructions to Authors
Health Care Management Review (HCMR) disseminates state-of-the-art knowledge about management, leadership, or administration of health care systems, organizations, and agencies. Multidisciplinary in scope, original contributions are invited that: (a) describe completed research on health care management, leadership, and administration; (b) report on rigorous evaluations of health care management innovations; (c) present a synthesis of prior research that results in evidence-based management practice recommendations; or (d) present a theoretically and empirically-based critical commentary on an emerging issue of keen interest. Articles must be theory-driven. Authors should clearly articulate implications and recommendations for health care managers and scholars.

Selection of manuscripts for publication is based on their timeliness, originality, soundness of methods, significance of findings, usefulness of recommendations, and quality of presentation. Manuscripts are subject to editorial modification and revisions necessary to bring them into conformity with HCMR editorial style. HCMR invites submission on health care systems from around the world. Letters to the Editor, published as space permits, must not exceed 300 words and 10 references.

Manuscript Review
HCMR is a peer-reviewed journal. Each paper is reviewed by the editor, and if it is judged appropriate for the journal, it is then sent to two referees for double-blind peer review. Based on their recommendations, the editor then decides whether the paper should be accepted as it is, revised, or rejected.

Preparation of Manuscript
The corresponding author will receive an acknowledgment of receipt and a manuscript tracking number for reference. Manuscripts that do not adhere to the following instructions risk being returned to the corresponding author for technical revision before undergoing peer review.

General Format. The recommended manuscript length is 26 pages or less, including figures, tables, and references, using 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Double-space all text, abstracts, and references. Please include a brief title (maximum of 40 characters, including spaces) to be used as a running head.

The manuscript needs to include the following in the order listed: title page; blinded title page; abstract page and key words; text organized into five main headings, such as Introduction, Theory/Conceptual Framework, Methods, Findings, Implications; acknowledgments page; references; figures; and tables. Include on the title page (a) complete manuscript title; (b) authors' full names, all academic degrees and certifications, and affiliations; (c) name and address for correspondence, including fax number, telephone number, and e-mail address; and (d) sources of support that require acknowledgment, including whether the study was approved by an Institutional Review Board. Number pages consecutively, beginning with the title page. Manuscripts generally have five or fewer figures and/or tables, and less than 50 references. Manuscripts that greatly exceed the recommended page limit, figures and/or tables limit, or reference limit are likely to be returned to the authors for technical revision without peer review.

Structured Abstract. The abstract is a critical element of a good manuscript. Please provide a structured abstract, up to 300 words, using the following headings: Background, Purposes, Methodology/Approach, Findings, and Practice Implications.

Tables/Figures. Tables and figures should be formatted in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). Avoid footers and footnotes except in tables, where needed. Artwork should be either copied or pasted from the origination software into the manuscript.

Reference Style. The authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references. Double-space references at the end of the manuscript. Manuscripts ought to limit the references to fewer than 50. Before submitting a manuscript, be certain to eliminate automatic numbering, and endnotes fields.

The style of references is according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition), pages 215¨C218. References used in the text are cited by the author¡¯s name and date of publication in parentheses (Smith, 2000), with page numbers cited for direct quotations. All references cited in the text must be included on the reference list. The reference section lists citations alphabetically by the first author¡¯s last name. The reference list should include only references cited in the text. Examples of correct forms of references:

After Acceptance

Page Proofs and Corrections. Corresponding authors will receive page proofs electronically to check the copyedited and typeset article before publication. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Changes that have been made to make the article conform to Journal style should be allowed to stand if they do not alter the author¡¯s meaning. Authors may be charged for alterations to the proofs beyond those required to correct errors or to answer queries. Proofs must be checked carefully and returned electronically within 24 to 48 hours of receipt, as requested in the cover letter sent by e-mail accompanying the page proofs.
Articles that are selected for publication are edited by the editorial staff at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Although the editors and referees make every effort to ensure the validity of published manuscripts, the final responsibility rests with the authors, not with the Journal, its editor, or the publisher.

Reprints. Authors will receive a reprint order form with their page proofs that includes reprint costs. Reprint requests should be returned with the corrected proofs, if possible. Reprints are normally shipped 6 to 8 weeks after publication of the issue in which the item appears.
