About the journal
The Journal of Neurology is an international journal which officially represents the European Neurological Society and provides a source for publishing original communications on clinical neurlogy and related basic research.
Commentaries on new developments in clinical neurscience, which may be commissioned or submitted, are published as editorials. Letters to the Editors serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas or clinical notes and provide an opportunity for commenting on published papers. The News and Views section provides information on the development of neurlogical medicine, society news, and reports on recent congresses. Occasional book reviews are also published in this section. The Journal lists details of forthcoming meetings.

Every neurlogist interested in the field of organic neurlogical disease needs access to the information contained in this valuable journal.

Fields of interest: All fields of neursciences

Instructions to Authors
The author(s) transfer(s) the copyright to his/their article to Steinkopff Verlag effective if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute the article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media or any other form); it also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable.
In cases of duplicate submission the Editors reserve the right not to accept further papers for publication from the author involved for a defined period. Moreover, the Publisher reserves the right to invoice the author for the costs incurred during the processing of material not published for reasons related to duplicate submission.
Papers must be written in English. Editorial assistance with the language is available when needed. Editorial scrutiny can proceed more quickly if manuscripts and illustrations are submitted in quadruplicate (one original manuscript with typing on one side of the page only, plus 3 photocopies with text on both sides to keep postal charges at a minimum). Papers must not exceed 8 printed pages (24 typewritten pages of 32 lines each) plus 8 figures, taking up no more than 3 printed pages altogether. Exceptions to this rule can be made only with the agreement of the joint chief editors.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by the "Copyright Transfer Statement" (the form is also regularly published in the journal).
Manuscripts in electronic form. Submission of electronic data is encouraged. Please do not transmit any such data to the publisher until your manuscript has been reviewed and accepted for publication. Please follow the instructions for the preparation of electronic manuscripts and digital images.
In order to reduce mailing costs, rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to authors.

Letters to the editors will be considered for publications of brief communications or case reports; they should not contain more than 600 words, 1 figure, 1 table (or 2 of either), and 15 references.

Manuscripts submitted for publication must contain a statement that (1) the manuscript has not been submitted for publication elsewhere and will not be submitted elsewhere while under consideration for this journal and (2) that all human studies have been reviewed by the appropriate ethics committee and have therefore been performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki. It should also be stated clearly in the text that all persons gave their informed consent prior to their inclusion in the study. Details that might disclose the identity of the subjects under study should be omitted.
Reports of animal experiments must state that the "Principles of laboratory animal care" (NIH publication No. 86-23, revised 1985) were followed, as well as specific national laws (e.g. the current version of the German Law on the Protection of Animals) where applicable.
The Joint Chief Editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with the above-mentioned requirements. The author will be held responsible for false statements or for failure to fulfil the above-mentioned requirements.

1. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper only with a 4-cm margin on the left side and a space of 6 mm between lines. The author should mark in the margin where figures and tables are to be inserted. Form and content should be carefully checked. A charge will be made for changes introduced after the manuscript has been set in type.

2. The title page should comprise: first name and surname of author(s), title of paper, authors' affiliations with complete postal addresses, any footnotes referring to the title, address for correspondence. To facilitate communication between the authors, editors and publisher, the author should furnish a telephone or FAX number on the title page of the manuscript.

3. Each paper must be preceded by an English abstract of the main points.

4. Key words. Immediately following the abstract no more than 5 key words should be supplied. Key words should be taken from Index Medicus (Medical Subject Headings) or, failing this, composed on the same principle.

5. Footnotes to the title of the paper appear without a symbol; those to the text are numbered consecutively; footnotes to tables should be with lower-case letters.

6. References. Only works that are cited in the text and that have been accepted for publication should be included in the list of references. The list should be numbered and alphabetical according to the first author's name. Works by 2 authors should be listed alphabetically according to the 2nd author's name, then chronologically. Works by 3 or more authors should be listed chronologically. References should be styled as follows.

Examples:
1. Freeman WJ, Maurer K (1989) Advances in brain theory give new directions to the use of the technologies of brain mapping in behavioral studies. In: Maurer K (ed) Topographic brain mapping of EEG and evoked potentials. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp 118-126
2. Hadley DM, Teasdale GM (1988) Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine. J Neurol 235:193-206
3. Ottoson D, Lundeberg T (1988) Pain treatment by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS): a practical manual. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York

Citation of works in the text should be by numbers in square brackets.

7. Figures should be restricted to the minimum needed to clarify the text and not be regarded as merely illustrative. Information given in legends should not be repeated in the text; similarly, the same data should not be presented in both graph and table form. Previously published illustrations are not usually accepted.
All figures should be numbered consecutively throughout and submitted on separate sheets apart from the text (legends should be on a separate sheet). All figures should bear the author's name and the figure number, and the top of the figure should be indicated on the back in soft pencil. Facial photographs must be accompanied by written permission to publish.

Illustrations:

a) Line drawings. Please submit high-quality prints. Arrows, letters and numbers should be clearly legible. Letters 2 mm high are recommended. If reduction is absolutely necessary, please state the alternative scale desired. The publisher reserves the right to reduce or enlarge illustrations.
b) Computer drawings are acceptable provided they are of comparable quality to line drawings. Lines and curves must be smooth.
c) Instrument tracings.
d) Half-tone illustrations. Please submit well-contrasted photographic prints, trimmed at right angles and in the desired final size. Letters and numbers should be about 3 mm high. The figures, including legends, should not exceed the print area of 17.6 x 22.4 cm or the column width of 8.6 x 22.4 cm.
Several figures should be grouped into a plate on one page. If plates are submitted, the figures must be mounted on regular bond paper, not on card-board.
e) Color illustrations will be accepted up to the discretion of the editors/the publisher.

8. Offprints may be ordered at cost price when the page proofs are returned. If offprints are ordered it is possibele to receive pdf data of your article via e-mail. Steinkopff will supply the corresponding author with one free copy of the relevant issue.
