Instructions to Authors
1. Please submit three copies of the manuscript (= typescript) including copies of all figures and tables should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief:
Prof. Ulrich Deil Institute of Biology II / Dept. of Geobotany University of Freiburg Schänzlestr. 1 79104 Freiburg Germany Phone: +49.761.2032695 Fax: +49.761.2032696 e-mail: ulrich.deil@biologie.uni-freiburg.de.
Manuscripts may also be sent to any Co-Editor.
Please include your complete address and e-mail in the accompanying letter. The corresponding author will be notified of the receipt of the manuscript.
2. By submitting a paper to PHYTOCOENOLOGIA, the author implicitly guarantees that it is original unpublished work, not being considered for publication elsewhere. When an article is accepted for publication, the authors transfer the copyright of their article to the publisher. The copyright covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article including reprints, microfilm or any other reproductions and translations.
3. All manuscripts are generally subject to peer review to evaluate their scientific soundness and their suitability for the journal`s audience. Authors will normally be notified of acceptance, rejection, or need for revision within 2-4 months. Rejected manuscripts will only be returned to the authors if they contain important comments from the referees. After acceptance, an electronic version and an identical printed version of the text should be provided. Your diskette should contain the text saved as files: Word for Windows, WordPerfect or Word under MS-DOS or Word or WordPerfect for Apple Macintosh. When using other programs save the text additionally as ASCII-files. For figures send eps- or tiff-files with 300 dpi for photos, 1200 dpi for line drawings. Original illustrations and tables should also be submitted with the final version of the text.
4. Manuscripts may be presented in English, French, German or Spanish. Authors not using their mother tongue are strongly advised to have the text reviewed by a native speaker before submission. All manuscripts should be supplied with the title translated into English and with an English abstract (not more than 300 words), followed by up to six keywords (items not covered by the title). Captions of figures and tables must be written in the language of the manuscript and in English. Extensive papers should also include a table of contents and a summary (in the language of the paper and in English).
5. The title should be followed by the name(s) and home base of the author(s) and the number of figures and tables. The main portion of the paper should preferably be divided into the following sections: Introduction, Study Area, (Materials and) Methods, Results, and Conclusion or Discussion, followed by Acknowledgements (if necessary) and References. The full name, title and complete address should be given at the end of the manuscript. Always consult a recent issue of the journal for details on format, sequence of headings, citation style and arrangement of the manuscript.
6. Typing must be on one side only, with double spacing and a wide margin. All pages should be numbered. Paragraphs must be indented. Headings and subheadings should be written normally (not in capital letters). Scientific names up to the genus are to be written in italics or underlined with a wavy line (Carex curvula ssp. curvula). Plant community names are not to be printed in italics (Caricetum curvulae, but Carex curvula-community); their nomenclature should respect the proposals of the Phytosociological Code (Weber et al. 2000 in: J. Veg. Sci. 11: 739-768). Units of measurement must follow the International System of Units (SI). Abbreviations and symbols must be defined when first mentioned. Footnotes should be avoided.
7. When quoting references in the text, the author`s name may be written in small capitals (not in capitals!) (BERGMANN) or underlined with a broken line (Bergmann). Citations should be made as follows: MAYER (1971) or (MAYER 1971), MUELLER-DOMBOIS & ELLENBERG (1974), MEUSEL et al. (1965). In the text, et al." should be used in the case of more than two authors. Several papers of the same author published in the same year should be differentiated in the text, and in the list of references, by a, b, c, etc., in the order quoted in the text. Reference to articles and books should be limited to published work or work in press. Sources not generally available should be indicated with an addition such as (unpubl.), (pers. comm.), (report), or (mnsc.).
8. The reference list must be alphabetical. Listings of several works by the same author(s) should be grouped in chronological order, with the author`s name being replaced by a dash. Articles from journals, under (a) below, chapters from collective works (b) or books (c) should be listed as follows:
(a) Ellenberg, H. (1968): Wege der Geobotanik zum Verständnis der Pflanzendecke. - Naturwissenschaften 55: 462-470.
(b) Hansen, A.J., Risser, P.G. & di Castri, F. (1992): Epilogue: Biodiversity and ecological flow across ecotones. - In: A.J. Hansen & F. di Castri (eds.): Landscape boundaries, pp. 423-438. - Springer, New York.
(c) Grime, J.P. (1979): Plant strategies and vegetation processes. - Wiley, Chichester. 222 pp.
Titles of periodicals should be abbreviated according to the usual rules listed in the World List of Scientific Periodicals or the conventions used in Biological Abstracts and similar sources. The number of the volume should be given in Arabic numerals, in boldface or underlined doubly.
9. Figures and tables should always be mentioned in the text (Fig. x, Table y). The authors should indicate in pencil at the margin of the manuscript approximately where they are to be inserted. The legends of the figures and the headings of the tables, numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, are to be given at the end of the text. Each figure and table should be supplied on a separate sheet, with the number and author`s name on the reverse side. Figures (diagrams, graphs and photographs) must be of high quality and suitable for reproduction without modification. Diagrams and graphs should be large enough to permit reduction to the typing area (11.5 x 18.1 cm). Photographs should be black-and-white, high-contrast, glossy prints. For maps, please use scale bars to avoid mistakes by reduction. Coloured figures and maps are accepted if a page charge will be transmitted from the author. If necessary, oversized tables will be printed.
10. The author receives only one set of proofs for checking. Alterations other than corrections of typographical errors are not possible. 11. 50 reprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge to the corresponding author. Additional reprints may be ordered from the publisher on the order form accompanying the proofs.
