It is published quarterly in March, June, September and December. The Journal publishes research articles of theoretical, applied or pedagogical interest to the statistical community. Founded in 1972, the Journal was successively edited by N. C. Giri (1973), A. M. Mathai (1974-1977), D. A. S. Fraser (1977-1980), S. G. Ghurye (1981-1984), D. L. McLeish (1985-1988), M. Moore (1989-1991), L. K. Chan (1992-1994), N. M. Reid (1995-1997), and C. Genest (1998-2000). Since January 1, 2001, the Editor is Professor Richard A. Lockhart, Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, British Columbia). His editorial views were detailed in the March 2001 issue of the Journal. The Editor's report, published in March 2002, provides the mosl recent information on the Journal's editorial operations. The Managing Editor is Professor George P. H. Instructions to Authors The Canadian Journal of Statistics is an official publication of the Statistical Society of Canada devoted to the dissemination of innovative research work in the theory and application of statistics. Articles published in the Journal are written in English or French and have been subject to refereeing. When judged appropriate by the Editor, some papers are published along with discussion. Scope of the Journal The Journal aims to publish papers of broad interest to its readers. Survey and review papers are welcome, as are papers focusing on applications or consulting problems. To be acceptable, applied papers must be reporting an innovative statistical analysis or a new treatment of important or novel data; solutions of consulting problems must also involve original elements. The Editor will be pleased to provide advice to authors preparing papers of these types. Address for submission All contributions must be submitted to the Editor, preferably by e-mail to cjs@ssc.ca. PDF, Postscript and (stand alone) LaTeX files only are accepted. Hard copies are then unnecessary. Authors who prefer to proceed by mail should send four copies of their manuscript to: Richard A. Lockhart Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science Simon Fraser University Burnaby, British Columbia Canada V5A 1S6 Review process A double-blind refereeing system is used: the identity of the referees is not communicated to the authors and vice versa. Electronic submissions should include: (i) a file containing an anonymous version of the manuscript; and (ii) a separate file giving the following information: names, addresses, affiliations, and acknowledgements. It is the authors' responsibility to make their manuscripts as anonymous as possible. General presentation rules To facilitate review, manuscripts should be in 12 pt and double-spaced. Tables and figures should be inserted in the text, rather than collated at the end of the paper. Unless central or essential to the flow of the discussion, mathematical arguments should be deferred to appendices. The title and the abstract should be concise and descriptive. French translations will be provided by Journal in case of publication. Symbols should not be used at the start of a sentence. Footnotes are not allowed. Displayed equations should be numbered consecutively and only when referenced in the text. The bibliography should be complete, accurate, alphabetical, and unnumbered. Abbreviations should not be used for authors' or journal's names, nor for the titles of the articles. Upon acceptance The Journal strives to get manuscripts refereed quickly. Most papers go through at least one revision before being formally accepted, however. Once they are, authors are asked to sign a copyright transfer form. They must also supply a running head of at most 35 characters and a short list of key words and phrases in English, along with appropriate MSC 2000 subject classification codes. Page charges The Canadian Journal of Statistics is a non-profit organization that aims to disseminate statistical methodology as widely as possible, at the lowest possible subscription costs to individuals and libraries. Authors who agree to cover the production costs for their papers, once in press, help maintain this policy and contribute indirectly to the dissemination of their own work. Production costs are currently set at $42 Canadian per page. The publication of papers is not contingent upon the payment of these costs, which remains at the authors' discretion.
