Aims and Scope:

This radical interdisciplinary journal of theory and politics continues to be one of the most exciting and influential resources for scholars in the social sciences worldwide.

As one of the fields leading scholarly refereed journals, Economy and Society plays a key role in promoting new debates and currents of social thought. In regular issues, and through issues devoted to special themes, Economy and Society covers questions ranging from economic governance to developments in the life sciences and beyond, and publishes major new work on current issues confronting progressive politics throughout Europe and North America, Australasia and the Pacific Rim.

Form:

  1. The title of the article, the author's name and address, and a biographical note should be typed on the flysheet which can be detached from the body of the article. The article can then be sent anonymously to editorial advisors for opinion. The biographical note should follow this model:

Jane Smith studied economics and sociology in Utrecht and philosophy in Paris. She has taught at the universities of Groningen and Budapest. She is currently Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and a research fellow in the UNESCO Program on Ethics and Economics. She is the author of The Economy of the Gift (Carvell, 1994), and joint editor, with Sacha Korsakofsy, of Post-Capitalist Economies (University of Alaska Press, 1998). Her current research is on the ethical presuppositions of political economy.

  2. Abstract and keywords: A 100 to 125 word description of the article, labelled 'Abstract', should be submitted double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper. In addition, six key words, suitable for indexing and on-line search purposes, should be supplied.

  3. Body: All copy, including indented material and footnotes, should be double-spaced on A4 (81/40x111/20) white bond paper, using one side of the sheet. Margins should be at least 11/40 on all sides. The pages should be numbered serially. Four copies of the article should be submitted; these will not be returned to the author after processing by the Board. The relative status of section headings should be clearly indicated.

  4. Notes: These should be placed at the end of the text, before the bibliography. They should be indicated by numerals placed in the text. Notes are for explanation and comments, as distinct from references; they may themselves contain references to the bibliography.

  5. Bibliography: References in the text to books and articles should be cited thus: either 'it has been demonstrated (Smith 1995) that....' or 'the work of Smith (1995) demonstrates that....'

The bibliography should give details for all such citations. It should be arranged in alphabetical order by authors' names and the items should follow this style:

Smith, Jane (1994) The Economy of the Gift, New York: Carvell.

  6. Authors are requested to send an electronic version on disk of the finally accepted article, providing details of the make and model of the computer and the name and version number of the word-processing software used. It is important that authors ensure that their typescript is an exact printout of what is on the disk.

Spelling, punctuation and style:

Follow the Oxford English Dictionary and Fowler's Modern English Usage. Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers, The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors and Collins' Authors' and Printers' Dictionary are additional useful sources of reference.

Accepted Contributions:

  1. It is a condition of acceptance that the contribution has not already appeared in print (apart from quotations and illustrations, the source of which is acknowledged), that it is not under consideration elsewhere, and that, if published, it will not be reproduced in whole or in substantial part without the permission of the publishers.

  2. Proofs will be dispatched by the publishers to the contributors who should return them as soon as possible to the Editor. Misprints should be corrected. If other alterations are made at the proof stage the contributor may have to pay for them.

  3. The editors reserve the right to edit papers to conform to correct English and the style of the journal.

  4. Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication.
