About the journal

Clinical and Experimental Dermatology is an official publication of the British Association of Dermatologists. Compiled by an international editorial board to act as a worldwide medium of communication of new developments and directions in dermatological research, the Journal aims to publish a variety of review articles, original papers, concise reports and correspondence concerned with clinical and experimental aspects of dermatology.

Instructions to Authors

Clinical and Experimental Dermatology aims to publish a variety of review articles, original articles, concise reports, educational features and correspondence concerned with clinical and experimental aspects of dermatology. A clear objective of the Journal will be to publish manuscripts that are of broad interest to dermatologists and dermatological researchers. Other key features of the Journal are free colour illustrations, six-week review time and publication within 2-3 issues from time of acceptance. The Journal is an official journal of the St John's Hospital Dermatological Society and the British Association of Dermatologists.

Authors are required to assign copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing Ltd, and a Copyright Assignment Form must be signed.  Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned.  (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement).  To assist authors the editorial office will supply an appropriate copyright assignment form.  Alternatively, the copyright form can be accessed on line at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/ced_caf.pdf.

*This Journal is covered by Current Contents, ISI/BIOMED, Science Citation Index, ASCA, Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences and Index Medicus.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://ced.manuscriptcentral.com. Full instructions are provided on the site. Submissions should be uploaded as Rich Text Format (RTF) files plus separate figure files. GIF, JPEG, PICT or Bitmap files are acceptable for submission, but only TIF or EPS files (as detailed at the end of this page) are suitable for printing. After acceptance you will be contacted to provide print-quality figures if you have not already done so. If you cannot submit online, four copies of all material for publication should be sent to the Editor, Prof. J. McGrath, British Association of Dermatologists. 19 Fitzroy Square, London, W1T 6EH. Manuscripts, which are subject to review by independent expert referees must include a short summary, which should be typewritten on one side of the paper only, with a wide margin, be double spaced, and bear the title of the paper, name and address of each author, together with the name of the hospital, laboratory or institution where the work has been carried out. The name, full postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author who will be responsible for reading the proofs should be given on the first page. Pages should be numbered. Authors should keep a copy of their manuscript.

Authors must adhere to the acceptable use of English and syntax. Generic names of drugs must be given. The Editor reserves the right to make literary corrections. Papers received are assumed to have been submitted exclusively to Clinical and Experimental Dermatology and *all authors must give signed consent to publication in a letter sent with the manuscript. Authorship implies a substantial contribution. Authors must inform the Editor of any possible conflict of interest capable of influencing their judgement. Perusal of unsubmitted data used may be requested by the editor.

The Journal requires a signed declaration of consent *to the publication of details from any patient where the individual can be identified including all papers that contain clinical photographs, or in which cases are described as individuals, and those where patients with rare dermatoses are noted with age and sex. Authors of such papers are to obtain the explicit consent of the patient(s) concerned. The Editorial office will be happy to provide guidance in cases of uncertainty. *All required forms are available on the manuscript central site http://ced.manuscriptcentral.com and www.blackwell-science.com/ced.

The Journal is willing to consider articles on all aspects of dermatology including hypotheses, political viewpoints and educational opinions. However, the main types of article will be:

Review articles. The journal aims to publish concise, high quality review articles on subjects of interest covering both clinical and experimental aspects of dermatology. Most review articles will be commissioned, but other authors are invited to contact the Editorial Office and discuss directly the possible submission of unsolicited review articles, all of which will be peer-reviewed. Review articles should consist of a summary not exceeding 200 words and the main text (excluding the references) should not exceed 1200 words. References should be limited to a maximum of 30. A tabulated list of up to 10 'learning points' should also be included. Use of illustrations and figures is encouraged.

Original articles. The journal welcomes submission of original articles, which may be submitted as either a "Clinical original article' or an "Experimental original article.' Such articles should include separate abstract, methods, results and discussion sections. The abstract should not exceed 200 words and the main text (excluding the references) should be limited to a maximum of 1200 words. No more than 25 references should be cited. Up to four Figures and one Table are permitted.

Concise reports. The journal wishes to encourage submission of concise reports, which may be submitted as either a "Clinical concise report' (including Case reports) or an "Experimental concise report.' Such reports should consist of an abstract not exceeding 150 words, followed by the main text (without sub-sections) whch is limited to a maximum of 800 words (excluding references). No more than 10 references should be cited. A maximum of two Figures will be permitted.

Correspondence. Authors are encouraged to submit items of correspondence as 'letters' to the Journal. The correspondence section aims to reflect a wide number of issues relevant to clinical and experimental studies in dermatology, as well as encompassing personal views on clinical practice or dermatological research. Letters are limited to a maximum of 500 words and 5 references.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Journal aims to publish regular, peer-reviewed educational features relevant to the practice of clinical dermatology. These are invited by the Editorial team, although direct submissions are also welcomed. The main types of article are currently:

Clinicopathological cases: These should provide a test of the reader's diagnostic skills. For each, the clinical history, pathology and illustration(s) should be presented first (and fit on one printed page of the Journal). This should be followed by the diagnosis, discussion and learning points. The entire text and all illustrative material will be limited to two printed pages of the Journal (no more than 800 words in total) and a maximum of six references should be cited. A paper that changed clinical practice: These should encompass discussion of a published paper that has made an impact on the author's management of patients. The text should be limited to 1000 words and no more than 6 references cited. A memorable patient: These should report a case that made an impact on the author. The text should be limited to 600 words and no more than 6 references should be cited. Further information and examples can be found on the Journal web site.

Illustrations. The Journal will publish colour photographs free of charge subject to editorial approval. Illustrations should be referred to in the text as e.g., Fig. 1, Figs 2-4, and marked on the back with the Figure number the name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper. Orientation of an illustration should be indicated by marking the top with an arrow. Four sets of illustrations should be provided with each manuscript, in addition to any supplied electronically (see below). The final width of the figures will be either 82, 114 or 173 mm. Diagrams should be on separate sheets. Lines and text should be of sufficient size to stand reduction (lettering no less than 4 mm high for a 50% reduction). A legend should be provided for each illustration, and photomicrograph, should state the original magnification. Legends should be grouped on a separate sheet of paper.

Tables. These should be kept to a minimum and include only essential data. They should be typewritten on separate sheets labelled Table 1, Table 2, etc., and have accompanying legends.

Abbreviations and Units. Full names with uncommon abbreviations must be given with the first mention: new abbreviations should be coined only for unwieldy names and should not be used unless the names occur frequently. All quantitative measurements should be in terms of the International System of Units (SI) where possible, but blood pressure should be in mmHg.

References should be verified against the original work before submission. Only papers closely related to the author's work should be referred to: exhaustive lists should be avoided. References to personal communications, unpublished data and manuscripts either in 'preparation' or 'submitted for publication' should be inserted, if essential, in the text only and not in the listed references. References should be in the Vancouver style, i.e. references appear as consecutive, unbracketed superscript numbers in the text, e.g. ".in our previous report1 and that of Smith et al.2 .' and should be listed numerically in the reference list at the end of the article. If more than four authors, include the first three authors followed by et al. Format references as below, using standard abbreviations for journal titles:

1 de Berker DAR, Baran R, Dawber RPR. The Nail in Dermatological Diseases. In: Baran and Dawber's Diseases of the Nails and their Management (Baran R, Dawber RPR, de Berker DAR, Haneke E, Tosti, A, eds), 3rd edn. Oxford: Blackwell Science Ltd, 2001: 172-22.

2 Meggitt SJ, Reynolds NJ. Azathioprine for atopic dermatitis. Clin Exp Dermatol 2001; 26: 369-375.

3 Du Vivier A. Dermatology Pocket Picture Book. Oxford: Blackwell Science Ltd, 2001.

Electronic Artwork. When submitting artwork electronically, please read the information on the Blackwell Publishing web site at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp. Vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) should be saved in EPS format and bitmap files (e.g. photographs) in TIFF format.  For the various types of original figures, images must be scanned at the following minimum resolution, at their final size: 300 dpi for halftone material (i.e. both Colour and Black & White photographs); 600 dpi for line artwork; and 600 dpi for line and tone (line art and halftone combined). We can also use EPS files, please see the instructions on our website at site http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp.
Please note that once a manuscript has been accepted, hard copies of all of the figures in the article should be sent to the Managing Editor at the following address: John Caulfield, Clinical & Experimental Dermatology, BAD House, 19 Fitzroy Square, London W1T 6EH, UK.  It is now the policy of the Journal and the Publisher that we have hard copies of all of the figures in the manuscript.  The reason for this is that when electronic figures are printed they can turn out quite different (with regard to the colour) than they appear on screen. A hard copy of the figures will be a true representation of the colour and can be used for comparison.

Page proofs. Proofs are sent by e-mail as an Acrobat PDF file. Corrected proofs must be returned to the publisher within 3 days of receipt, and by airmail or courier if posting from outside the UK. The Editor reserves the right to correct the proofs if the author's corrections are overdue. Major alterations cannot be accepted.

Manuscripts will be returned to intending contributors who do not follow the above instructions.
