About the journal

The Journal of Peasant Studies is one of the most outstanding journals in the field of the political economy of agrarian change. With its focus on considering peasants within the broader systems and historical situations in which they exist, it is essential reading for all who want to achieve an understanding of the role of peasants in political, economic and social transformation. It embraces both the theoretical and the empirical, and encompasses a multi-disciplinary area of study, rigorously pursued: catering for economists, historians (including historians of art), anthropologists, political scientists, geographers and sociologists, as well as literary scholars. It has a comprehensive reviews section, and a meticulously compiled Index of the first twenty volumes of the journal's contents was published separately in 1994.

The Krishna Bharadwaj Prize and the Eric Wolf Prize

Two prizes are to be awarded annually for the two best articles published in the Journal of Peasant Studies. The prizes will be named in memory of two long-standing and distinguished members of the Editorial Advisory Board, the political economist Krishna Bharadwaj (1935-92) and the anthropologist Eric Wolf (1923-99), in recognition of their enduring contributions to the study of peasants. The value of each prize is ?50. All articles published in the relevant volume are eligible, and special weight will be given to analytical originality and comparative scope. One of the prizes will normally be awarded to a first-time contributor, and the other will be open to those whose work has previously been published in the journal. Members of the Editorial Advisory Board will nominate candidates for each prize, and the judges will consist of a sub-committee of the Editorial Board and the Executive Editor. Details of the awards made will be published in the journal.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

The Journal of Peasant Studies is a refereed journal.

Articles submitted to The Journal of Peasant Studies should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.

Each typescript should be submitted in triplicate to The Journal of Peasant Studies, PO Box 773, Richmond, TW10 7XT. Articles should be typewritten on A4/Letter paper, on one side only and double-spaced and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams or tables) should be numbered consecutively.

There is no standard length for articles but 5,000?,000 words (including notes and references) is a useful target. The article should begin with an indented and italicised summary of around 100 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on thecover sheet as should a note of the exact length of the article.

All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text.

Following acceptance for publication, articles should be submitted on high density 3?inch disks (IBM PC or Macintosh compatible) in rich text format (.RTF) together with a hard copy to facilitate the typesetting process. Notes should be grouped together at the end of the file. Any diagrams or maps should be prepared in black and white. Tints should be avoided, use open patterns instead. If maps and diagrams cannot be prepared electronically, they should be presented on good quality white paper. If mathematics are included 1/2 is preferred over ?

Each disk should be labelled with the journal's name, article title, lead author's name and software used. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that where copyright materials are included within an article the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included on a separate sheet included with the disk.

Authors are entitled to a free e-print of their article or, on request, 50 free offprints, and a copy of the issue in which their article appears.

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources. STYLE
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The Editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. A guide to the style and presentation is obtainable from the Editors, or from the publisher.

NOTES

  1. Simple references without accompanying comments: To be inserted at appropriate place in text, underlined and in square brackets stating author's surname, publication date of work referred to, and relevant pages.
    e.g. [Brown, 1964: 33]
Where the author of a work referred to is an organic part of the sentence the reference can be made in a more compact manner as in the following example:
    ‘Wolf [1959a: 33] makes the point that . . .
  2. References with comments: To appear as Notes, indicated consecutively through the article by raised numerals corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end.
  3. Book titles and names of journals should be underlined, titles of articles should be in inverted commas.

A REFERENCE LIST should appear after the list of Notes. It should contain all the works referred to, listed alphabetically by author's surname (or name of sponsoring body where there is no identifiable author). Where two works by the same author appear these may be differentiated in the reference and the reference list by affixing a letter to the publication (see below). Style should follow: Author's surname, forename and/or initials, date of publication, title of publication, place of publication and publisher. Examples are shown below:

  • Wolf, Eric R., 1965a, Sons of the Shaking Earth, Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press.
  • Harrison, Mark, 1979, "hayanov and the Marxists" The Journal of Peasant Studies, Vol.7. No.1.
  • Government of Pakistan, 1964, Census of Agriculture, Karachi.

House Style: British spelling throughout; NB: -ise endings NOT -ize. Single quotes, double within single. Dates: 28 January 1968.
