About the journal

To provide a convenient and rapid outlet for extended research papers on topics relating inter alia to urban planning, city design, spatial strategy, regional development and environmental management. Policy innovation is emphasized, also evidence-based policy review, and progress in digital visualisation and analysis. The scale of research coverage ranges from the local to the global, and contributors are drawn from all parts of the world.
Progress in Planning is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal that includes contributions from the human and environmental sciences as well as from the design disciplines and information technology fields. Its issue coverage is both topical and practical - design and behaviour, land utilization, economic performance, social inclusion, real estate markets and regulation, public and private transport, spatial mobility and demographics, sustainable ecology, metropolitan management, urban infrastructure engineering at macro and micro scale - and the methodologies of planning for all these issues.
Instructions to Authors
The Editors of Progress in Planning welcome submissions of manuscripts and proposals for manuscripts from authors. All submissions will be reviewed by three referees.
Online Submission. Manuscripts are submitted through the Progress in Planning online submission and review web site, http://ees.elsevier.com/pip. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com. The submission system requires you to prepare the manuscript, abstract (400 words) and figures as separate files, which are built into a PDF for the use of reviewers and editors. Authors in need of assistance in preparing their electronic submission should contact Elayne Manson, the Editorial Office, Progress in Planning, School of Environment and Development, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.
Paper Length. The length of a manuscript should be between 25,000 - 35,000 words or their equivalent (including notes, tables, maps, diagrams and photographs). Proposals should be about 1,000 words with a rationale and chapter headings.
Units. Measurements should, wherever possible, be expressed in metric units.
Illustrations. For web based submission all illustrations should be uploaded in camera-ready form, suitable for direct reproduction (which may include reduction).
Photographs, charts and diagrams should all be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred.
Brief captions should be provided and typed consecutively on a separate page. Line diagrams should be submitted in a form suitable for direct reproduction. They should accompany the manuscript when first submitted via the website or in hard copy but should not be included within the text.
References should be cited in the text in parentheses by giving the last name of the author(s) followed by the year of publication, e.g. (Cattell, 1952). If there is more than one work by an author in a given year, then they should be labelled alphabetically within each year, e.g. (Williams, 1967a).
The full references should be typed in double spacing at the end of each contribution and contain names and initials of all the authors, the year of publication in parentheses, the full title of the article or book, the standard name of the journal, the volume number and pages; and, for books, the publisher's name and city of publication, e.g.
BURT, C. and BANKS, C. (1947) A factor analysis of body measurements for British adult males, Annals of Eugenics, 13, 238-256:
FOGARTY, M. P. (1947) Plan Your Own Industries: A Study of Local and Regional Development Organizations, Blackwell, Oxford.
Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights and Permissions Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com
Proofs. When the manuscript for your accepted article is received, it is considered to be in its final form. Proofs are not to be regarded as 'drafts'.
Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by email. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.
All lead authors will receive twelve gratis copies of the issue in which their article appears.
Author information. Authors can keep track of the progress of an accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
