About the journal

 Cover

This international journal of educational studies presents up-to-date information with analyses of significant problems and trends throughout the world. Comparative Education engages with challenging theoretical and methodological issues - and also considers the implications of comparative studies for the formation and implementation of policies - not only in education but in social, national and international development. Thus it welcomes contributions from associated disciplines in the fields of government, management, sociology - and indeed technology and communications - as these affect educational research and policy decisions.

Articles submitted to the Editorial Board are assessed by all members and are discussed in detail at Board meetings three times a year - an unusual, if not unique, feature. In addition, expert advice is taken on particular papers.

Over 40 years Comparative Education's editorial policy and presentation have evolved to match world developments and the changing concerns of those active in education or involved in its finance, management and wider implications. Our readership has evolved too in proportion as comparative studies of education have attracted the attention of statesmen, the commercial/industrial world, and parents and voters.

Instructions to Authors

The Editorial Board invites contributions dealing with international or analytically comparative aspects of education, highlighting such themes as: educational reform and practical problems of implementation; implications of demographic change and the distribution of resources; structural and geographical shifts in employment and professional expectations; the changing 'mix' of 'general' and vocational/professional' education; occupational mobility and regional or international co-operation; post-compulsory and 'young adult' education; part-time, recurrent or alternating education/training; new structures and operational patterns in higher education; the management and supply of educational opportunity, and its location or periodicity; the media and new communications or technologies in education; curricular content, and the learner's experience; teacher preparation and reorientation; education for the disadvantaged, or in neglected fields of competence; ideological and religious interventions; new trends and partnerships in comparative research. Suggestions of themes for articles or special issues will be welcomed.

Manuscripts should be sent to Brigid Walker, Co-ordinating Editor, Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol, 35 Berkeley Square, Bristol BS8 1JA, UK. Articles can be considered only if four complete copies of your manuscript and a disk are submitted unless other arrangements have been made with the editorial office. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. Each article should be accompanied by a summary of 100-150 words on a separate sheet, and a short note of biographical details for the 'Notes on Contributors' page. The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered.

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Electronic Submission. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".

Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to contributors unless sufficient international postal coupons have been sent.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

Citations of other work should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.

References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full, including pages, at the end of the paper in the following standard form:

Titles of journals and names of publishers, etc. should not be abbreviated. Acronyms for the names of organisations, examinations, etc. should be preceded by the title in full.

If you have any further questions about the style for this journal, please submit your questions using the Style Queries form.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editorial Assistant within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?15.00/$25.00 per copy.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION

Carfax strongly encourages authors to send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. These guidelines do not apply to authors who are submitting an article for consideration and peer review; they apply only to authors whose articles have been reviewed, revised, and accepted for publication.

It is essential that the hard-copy paper version of your article exactly matches the material on disk. Please print-out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office.

Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word-processing programs and Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".

File names: Tables, Figures and Text should each be saved as separate files. Each file should be named clearly and logically (e.g. Smith_txt.doc, Smith_tables.doc, Smith_figs.doc). End notes, footnotes and references should be saved in the Text file, not in separate files. A list of files and a brief explanation of what each file contains should be supplied with your manuscript.

Figures: Figures may be supplied on disk. We prefer figures to be saved in either TIFF (tagged image file format) or EPS (encapsulated postscript) formats. However, we can accept PICT or JPEG formats. High quality reproducible (i.e. high resolution output) hard copy paper print-outs must be supplied for all figures and must be identical to the disk versions, in case the disk is unusable. Figure captions should also be saved in the same file as the figure, not with the Text file. If figure files are very large, they may be saved on a separate disk. If compressing a file is necessary, please use "pkzip". Please ensure this is clearly labelled. Photographs can be sent on disk, but the hard copy (originals) must also be supplied. Save all photographs as high resolution images.

Tables: Save Tables in a separate file, together with the Table heading. Use the table function provided with the word processing package.

Style: Word processed files should be prepared according to journal style. Please consult the journal’s Notes for Contributors for style matters. The following general points should be followed:

  1. Do not bookmark your files.
  2. All paragraph indents must be done uniformly; all using tab key is preferred.
  3. Do not justify right-hand margins, use normal word wrap function. Do not insert "soft" hyphens at the ends of lines, i.e. do not break words. Turn off any automatic hyphenation feature available with your software.
  4. Use one hard space for word spacing throughout the document.
  5. Global Search and Replace wherever possible, e.g. change all instances of United States to US (consult Notes for Contributors and/or a back issue of the journal for style).
  6. All text which should be bold or italic should appear as bold or italic on the electronic version of your article. All headings should be in the correct format, i.e. font (italic, bold or roman), position (flush left or centred), case (uppercase or lowercase).
  7. Use the facility in your software for creating numbered or bullet lists.
  8. Flag the position of tables and/or figures in the text, e.g. (Fig. 1 here), (Table 1 here).
  9. Displayed material (e.g. displayed quotation) should be typed in the style of the journal, e.g. one line space above and below and indented left and right.
  10. All non-ASCII characters (mathematical symbols, Greek letters, or any other unusual accents or characters) should be highlighted on the hard copy.
  11. References should be typed journal style. If full caps/small caps are used for authors? names, this must be followed. If small caps are not available, type the authors? names uppercase/lowercase, do not type all uppercase.

Sending your File

  1. Virus check your disk before sending it to the Editor.

  2. Label your disk with the following information:

    (a) Journal title;
    (b) Name of author;
    (c) File names contained on disk;
    (d) Hardware used (PC or Mac);
    (e) Software used (name and version, e.g. Microsoft Word 95).

  3. Package disks so as to avoid damage in the post.
