About the journal
Aims and scope
The journal publishes regular articles and reviews in the areas of molecular, cell, and supracellular biology. In particular, the journal intends to provide a forum for publishing data that analyze the supracellular, integrative actions of gene products and their impact on the formation of tissue structure and function. Submission of papers with an emphasis on structure-function relationships as revealed by recombinant molecular technologies is especially encouraged. Areas of research with a long-standing tradition of publishing in Cell & Tissue Research include:
- neurobiology - neuroendocrinology - endocrinology - reproductive biology - skeletal and immune systems - development
Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Authors Cell and Tissue Research General Open Choice Editorial procedure Organization and General Style of Research Articles Artwork Guidelines Publication Schedule Reviews, Short and Rapid Communications, Supplementary Material Homepage
General Cell & Tissue Research publishes reports on novel results in any area of experimental biology. The work should be of high significance within its field, but also of interest to researchers outside the immediate area. Papers should be as concise as possible.
Open Choice In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles. Open Choice does not apply to Society Journals.
Editorial procedure Paper submissions will no longer be accepted. Authors are requested to submit papers in English online in order to facilitate quick and efficient processing. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times.

Organization and General Style of Research Articles Articles need to be efficient and concise.
Summary:
A single paragraph of fewer than 250 words.
Keywords:
Up to five.
Introduction:
Succinct, no subheadings.
Materials and methods:
Should follow the Introduction and should provide enough information to permit repetition of the experimental work.
Results and Discussion:
May each be divided by subheadings. Symbols and names for genetic loci, alleles, DNA and RNA should be italicized. Nonstandard abbreviations should be defined when first used in the text. All text should be double spaced.
References:
Include only articles that have been published or are in press. Personal communications should be documented by a letter of permission.
Please use the following style:
Bornstein JC, Furness JB, Smith TK, Trussell DC (1991) Synaptic responses evoked by mechanical stimulation of the mucosa in morphologically characterized myenteric neurons of the guinea pig ileum. J Neurosci 11:505?18
Furness JB, Costa M (1987) The enteric nervous system. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh
Unsicker K, Suter-Crazzolara C, Krieglstein K (1999) Neurotrophic roles of GDNF and related factors. In: Hefti F (ed) Handbook of experimental pharmacology, vol 134. Neurotrophic factors. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp 189?24
Artwork Guidelines For the best quality final product, it is highly recommended that you submit all of your artwork ?photographs, line drawings, etc. ?in an electronic format. Your art will then be produced to the highest standards with the greatest accuracy to detail. The published work will directly reflect the quality of the artwork provided.
Electronic Figure Submission
Supply all figures electronically.
Indicate what graphics program was used to create the artwork.
For vector graphics, the preferred format is EPS; for halftones, please use TIFF format. MS Office files are also acceptable.
Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Name your figure files with "Fig" and the figure number, e.g., Fig1.eps.
Line Art
Definition: Black and white graphic with no shading.
Do not use faint lines and/or lettering and check that all lines and lettering within the figures are legible at final size.
All lines should be at least 0.1 mm (0.3 pt) wide.
Line drawings should have a minimum resolution of 1200 dpi.
Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Halftone Art
Definition: Photographs or paintings with fine shading.
If any magnification is used in the photographs, indicate this by using scale bars within the figures themselves (without lettering).
Halftones should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
Combination Art
Definition: a combination of halftone and line art, e.g., halftone plus line drawing, halftone with extensive lettering, color diagrams.
Combination artwork should have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi.
Color Art
Color illustrations if meaningful are free of charge.
Color illustrations should be submitted as RGB (8 bits per channel).
Figure Lettering
To add lettering, we request to use Arial.
Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 12 -16 pt.
Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal, e.g., do not use 8-pt type on an axis and 20-pt type for the axis label.
Avoid effects such as shading, outline letters, etc.
Do not include titles or captions into your illustrations.
Figure Numbering
All figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals.
Figures must always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.
Figure parts must be denoted by lowercase roman letters (a, b, c, etc.) Type Arial, size 12-16 pt. Please use always letters of the same size for the principal lettering inside your figures.
If an appendix appears in your article and it contains one or more figures, continue the consecutive numbering of the main text. Do not number the appendix figures, "A1, A2, A3, etc."
Figure Captions
Each figure should have a caption describing accurately what the figure depicts.
Figure captions begin with the term Fig. in bold type, followed by the figure number, also in bold type.
No punctuation is to be included after the number, nor is any punctuation to be placed at the end of the caption.
Identify all elements found in the figure in the figure caption; and use boxes, circles, etc., as coordinate points in graphs.
Identify previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the figure caption.
Figure Placement and Size
Authors must prepare their illustrations to match following sizes: - 1 subcolumn width (3.9 cm) - 1 column width (8.4 cm) - 1.5 column width (12.9 cm) - the whole page width (17.4 cm) - length can vary, but must not exceed 23.4 cm
When submitting a panel, all parts should be arranged as one figure and saved in a single file. Panels should not be boxed in by borderlines. The vertical and horizontal space between the individual parts of a figure should be consistently 1 mm.
Cover figures Cover figures are chosen by the Coordinating Editor. Suggestions for cover illustrations are welcome (the author must own copyright to the image). The image must be sharp enough to allow magnification to the size of 13 cm (length) x 18 cm (width).
Publication Schedule We try to let authors have the reviewers?comments in less than a month. After acceptance, articles will be published electronically within approximately 6 weeks on the net (http://www.springerlink.com) and in the journal in less than three months.
One complimentary copy is supplied. Orders for offprints can be placed by returning the order form with the corrected proofs.
Reviews, Short and Rapid Communications, Supplementary Material Reviews (up to 20 printed pages including illustrations) and Minireviews (no more than 5 printed pages, line drawings only) should address issues relevant to a wide readership and intelligible to non-specialists. Minireviews must focus on topics of recent experimental research. Proposals for reviews/ minireviews should be submitted to the Coordinating Editor. Brief accounts containing new and interesting results may be published as Short communications (up to 4 printed pages, including figures and tables). Articles of outstanding interest can be reviewed and published with high priority as Rapid communications. Supplementary material submitted in electronic form can be put on Springer-Verlag’s server and will be accessible free of charge through http://springerlink.com
