About the journal

Logo

The biological approach to mental disorders continues to yield innovative findings of immense clinical importance. In four separately edited but closely related sections, this journal facilitates immediate comparison of data resulting from various experimental and clinical approaches. It features original and fundamental data on the relationship between neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology and -immunology, genetics and between normal and abnormal behavior in animals, healthy subjects and patients.

 Cover

The reader will also find pharmacoelectroencephalographic studies and extensive information on how psychotropic compounds affect both normal and abnormal psychologic states. Regular reviews report new methodologic approaches. Neuropsychobiology is a complete record of strategies and methodologies employed to study mental functions.

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original; final high-resolution pictures need only be sent after acceptance of the paper) together with a soft copy on disc. The manuscript should match the electronic file exactly. For details please refer to Electronic Submission. Editorial work and copy-editing will be executed from the electronic version of your manuscript.

Conditions

All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.

Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of ¡®Neuropsychobiology?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of both the author and the publisher.

It is the author¡¯s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Arrangement

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.
NB: Authors wishing to preserve the phonetic meaning of diacritics (PubMed reduces diacritics to their root characters) must spell their names accordingly when submitting manuscripts (e.g. M¨¹ller should be Mueller).

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3?0 key words in English is essential.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines.

Footnotes: Avoid footnotes.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate pages. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate page. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations in one block for reproduction (max. size 181 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author¡¯s name, and ¡®top?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800?,200 dpi.

Methodology

Subjects: The total number of subjects (or animals) included in a study should be given. The number of dropouts and the reason for dropping out should be indicated. In addition to a valid case analysis, an intent-to-treat analysis should usually be done. The criteria for selecting subjects should be given. The type of subjects, both volunteers and patients, should be described in detail; the therapeutic milieu should be mentioned.

Methods: All methods and variables used in the trial should be described. If all the variables are not reported in the paper presented, this should be indicated. For each method and variable, either a detailed description including aspects of reliability and validity and/or an adequate reference should be given. If at all possible a placebo group should be included in the trials.

EEG-Methods: If EEG or EP/ERP data are presented, the Guidelines for Experimental Designs, Data Acquisition and EEG-Mapping and/or currently issued guidelines of IPEG should be taken into account.

Data presentation: The data presentation should enable a reader to understand the results from the data to a maximum extent. If single values are not presented, means, standard deviations, type of statistics used (e.g. F, t, chi-square and p values, two-tailed) should be given. For nominal or ordinal data, frequency tables are applicable (absolute values, percentages).

Biometrics and statistics: In the case of drug studies, the type of study (e.g. phase I, early or late phase II, phase III or IV) and the aim should be clearly defined. It is of relevance whether a study is performed to end up with a hypothesis or if it is performed to test existing hypotheses. The statistical procedure, including the statistical model and the underlying assumptions should be presented. If more than one statistical method is used for primary outcome variables, the reasons should be indicated. It should be stated clearly whether exploratory descriptive or confirmatory data analyses are done. If more than one outcome variable is used, the study protocol should clearly discriminate between primary target variables and secondary (descriptive) variables. If confirmatory statistics are done (e.g. in a phase III drug trial to prove efficacy), then the test strategy to avoid an inflation of the type I error (Alpha) has to be clearly indicated. If a comparison to a standard drug is done, the type II error (Beta) in relation to the differences has to be taken into consideration.

Clinical relevance: The study planning, including the biometrical planning, should be done in a way that any clinically relevant differences can be detected by the study. The statistical methods should be described.

Rater and interrater training: The type, qualification and experience of the rater should be indicated. If more than one rater was involved in one rating, it has to be indicated how interrater reliability was ensured. This is of special importance if studies are done in more than one ward of a hospital or center or as multicenter trials.

GLP or GCP: Is has to be indicated whether the animal trial has been done in accordance with good laboratory practice and in case of a clinical trial whether the rules of good clinical practice were respected. The type of monitoring, auditing and source data verification should be indicated.

Ethics: Ethical considerations, benefits and risks of a trial must be mentioned: in addition it has to be indicated how informed consent was obtained.

Color Illustrations

Up to 6 color illustrations per page can now be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.?/ USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author¡¯s expense.

References

In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as ¡®unpublished data?and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Preferably, please cite all authors. Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals.
