About the journal

The aim of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology is to serve as a forum for scientifically based information in community dentistry, with the intention of continually expanding the knowledge base in the field. The scope is therefore broad, ranging from original studies in epidemiology, behavioral sciences, and health services research through to methodological reports in program planning, implementation and evaluation. Reports dealing with people of all age groups are welcome, including those relating to research in geriatric dentistry and care provision for the elderly.

The journal encourages manuscripts which present methodologically detailed scientific research findings from original data collection or analysis of existing databases. It also encourages thoughtful, even provocative, commentaries on subjects ranging from research methods to public policies. Purely descriptive surveys are not encouraged, though survey data can form a good basis for approaches to program planning and evaluation. This type of report is especially welcome when it comes from an economically developing nation.

The journal is published bimonthly.

Manuscripts - The journal accepts original research reports, reviews, and commentaries. Commentaries are statements of opinion on methods or policy intended to be provocative, and may or may not be peer-reviewed at the editor's discretion. Manuscripts (three copies) must be doublespaced, in English, and submitted on ISO A4 or on 8''x11'' size paper. Both British and American spelling conventions are acceptable. Do not submit a diskette copy at this stage. A cover letter should state that the work has been approved by all authors, and all authors must sign the cover letter. (Signatures faxed to the first author on a copy of the cover letter are acceptable.) The cover letter must also include the full postal address, telephone, fax, and e-mail of the primary author. In the cover letter, authors must include the names and postal addresses of two persons whom the authors consider would be qualified and appropriate reviewers for the manuscript. Acknowledgement of receipt is made by e-mail or postcard.

Copyright: Manuscripts are submitted on the understanding that the work has not been published before and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Submission of the manuscript means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication.

Copyright Assignment Form

Manuscripts accepted for publication may not be published elsewhere, in any language, without the written consent of the publisher. Articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all articles published in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm, videocassettes, or by electronic means, nor reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of the publisher.

Page charges: Authors are urged to be as concise as possible. Current page charges are DKK 950 for each page in excess of 7 printed journal pages (approximately 21 pages double-spaced typescript).

Ethics in science: In all reports of original studies with humans, authors should specifically state the nature of the ethical review and clearance of the study protocol. Informed consent must be obtained from human subjects participating in research studies. Some reports, such as those dealing with institutionalized children or mentally retarded persons, will need additional description of ethical clearance.

Title page: The title page should contain the following information in the order given: (1)Full title of the manuscript; (2) Full names of all authors; (3) Authors' institutional affiliations including city and country; (4) A running title, not to exceed 60 letters and spaces; (5) The name and address, including e-mail address, of the author responsible for correspondence about the manuscript.

Abstract page: A separate abstract page should contain the following: (1) Authors' last names (surnames) and initials; (2) Title of manuscript; (3) Abbreviated title of journal; (4) The heading Abstract, followed by the abstract itself; (5) Key words according to Index Medicus; (6) The name and address of author to whom requests for offprints should be sent. Reports of original research should write a structured abstract under the headings Objectives - Methods - Results - Conclusions.

Abstracts should be restricted to 250 words as far as possible, since longer abstracts are frequently truncated for electronic storage in MEDLINE.

References: References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in texts, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses, e.g. (1, 3-6, 9). Use lowercase letters for authors' names and book titles, with italics used only for genus and species names. The list of references begins on a fresh page.

The journal uses the Vancouver style of referencing. For correct style, authors are referred to: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Ann Int Med 1997;126:36-47. For abbreviations of journals, consult the Index Medicus list of journal abbreviations.

Avoid reference to "unpublished observations", "personal communications", and papers not yet accepted for publication. References to abstracts should be avoided if possible; such references are appropriate only if they are recent enough that time has not permitted full publication. References to written personal communications (not oral) may be inserted in parentheses in the text.

Examples of the Vancouver reference style are given below:

Illustrations: All graphs, drawings, and photographs are considered figures and should be sequentially numbered with Arabic numerals. Each figure must be on a separate page and each must have a caption. All captions, with necessary references, should be typed together on a separate page and numbered clearly (Fig.1, Fig. 2, etc.). Figures should be planned to fit the proportions of the printed page.

We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form accompanied by a sharp laser print. Please save line artwork (e.g. graphs) as EPS files and half-tones (e.g. photographs) as TIFF files. If computer graphics are not available, photographic prints or hand-drawn artwork are required. Color illustrations must be paid for by the author at current rates quoted by the publisher.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (Table 1, Table 2, etc.), with each table on a separate page and with due regard to the proportions of the printed page. Double documentation of data in graphics and tables will not be accepted.

Abbreviations, symbols, and nomenclature: Authors can consult the following source: CBE Style Manual Committee. Scientific style and format: the CBE manual for authors, editors, and publishers. 6th ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1994.

Offprints: Offprints can be ordered on the offprint form which will accompany the page proofs prior to publication.

Extra issues: Larger papers, monographs, and conference proceedings may be published as additional issues (numbered as ordinary issues). Full cost of these extra issues must be paid by the authors. Further information can be obtained from the editor or publisher.

Review procedures: All manuscripts (except invited reviews and some commentaries and conference proceedings) are submitted to at least two reviewers for peer review, and comments from the reviewers and the editor are returned to the lead author. The letter of acceptance for publication will be accompanied by a copyright clearance form and instructions for preparing the final manuscript and accompanying graphics on a diskette. When submitted with the final copy of the manuscript after reviews are completed, the computer disk must contain an exact copy of the manuscript with tables and figures in a separate file. Two final copies of the manuscript and a diskette should be sent to the editor as soon as possible after the acceptance letter has been received.
