Guide for Authors

Biochimie is a multitopical journal publishing original works, short communications (4 printed pages (approximately 2500 words) maximum, including title, references and only 2 figures or tables) as well as review articles in all areas of biology (enzymology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, structure of macromolecules, etc), provided that the approach adopted stems from biochemistry, biophysics or molecular biology. Interesting nucleotide sequence data are also welcome.
There are no page charge for texts or colour figures upon approval of the Editors. Authors are asked to provide a list of five possible referees for manuscripts submitted for publication. Authors are encouraged to submit a file in pdf format with their manuscript, to accelerate the review process.

Written in English, manuscripts will be considered regardless of their country of origin. They should be sent in triplicate to:

For Europe: Rédaction de Biochimie, M Hassini, Centre Universitaire des Saints-Pères, 45, rue des Saints-Pères, 75270 Paris cedex 06, France

For Japan and Asia: Yoshikazu Nakamura, Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo, 4-6-1 Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo 108, Japan

For the USA: John Hershey, University of California School of Medicine, Dept. of Biochemistry, Davis, CA 95616, USA

For Russia: L.L. Kisselev, Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology, Academy of Sciences of Russia, Vavilov Street 32, 117 984 Moscow B334, Russia

On-line submission as alternative for paper submission

Authors can also upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word? WordPerfect?or PostScript or document via the "Author Gateway" page of this journal http://authors.elsevier.com, where you will also find a detailed description on its use. The system generaties an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the file is suitable for reviewing. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary.

Presentation

The text should be as clear and concise as possible, typed in double spacing with wide margins. Articles should be drafted as follows: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion.

Title page

Should contain a short and precise title; surname and initials of the authors in lower case, indicating the corresponding author with an asterisk and a telephone- and fax number and an e-mail address of the corresponding author, postal address of the laboratories, each following a superscript number; a summary in English which does not exceed 300 words and 4 or 5 key words, suitable for indices and abstracting services; abbreviations and their explanations.

Figures and tables

They should be marked on the reverse side with the number and first author's name, on paper not larger than 21 x 29.5 cm. Lettering, numbers and symbols should be the same as in the text, and should be of sufficient size to remain legible after reduction. Legends should be presented on a separate page.

Photographs should be sharp, well-contrasted and glossy.

Figures should be prepared whenever possible for 1 column width (76 mm) or a page width (160 mm) with a maximum height of 210 mm.

Figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals, tables with Roman ones.

Suitable tables will be photoengraved in their submitted form. To that aim, dividing horizontal lines should be restricted to 3, and vertical lines omitted. Only the first letter of headings should be capitalized, and the column headings typed in italic.

References

They should be cited in the text, in square brackets, only one reference per number, in the order of appearance in the text. Submitted manuscripts should be cited "in press" with the name of the publication only if they have been accepted. Otherwise, they are cited in the text as "submitted" or "in preparation" following the authors' names. Full titles of articles and book chapters are required.

Miscellaneous

Molecular weight should not be expressed in daltons since it is defined as molecular weight ratio. The term molecular mass is no longer recommended and should be replaced by relative molecular mass (Mr). If, however, molecular mass is used, it should be expressed in daltons (Da).

Labeled elements are written as follows: 14C, 36S... and isotopically labeled compounds as [14C]urea, or, when the substance is marked with the same isotope in several positions (here two): [14C2]glycolic acid.

Expressions such as 131I-labeled albumin should not be contracted to [131I]albumin (since native albumin does not contain any iodine). However, 131I-albumin is accepted.

When the above means are not explicit, use the following labeling rules:

- [1-2H1]ethanol for CH3-CH2H-OH

- L-[2-14C]leucine or l-[-14C]leucine

- [carboxyl-14C]leucine

- [3,4-14C236S]methionine

- [3-14C, 2,3-D215N]serine

Square brackets should not be used for simple molecules, e.g. 14CO2, nor when the isotopic symbol refers to a word that is not a chemical name, an abbreviation or a symbol (e.g. 14C-labeled molecule).

Proofs and reprints

Proofs will be sent to the author indicated on the title page. They should be carefully corrected and returned to the publisher as soon as possible, within 48 hours at most. If this period is exceeded, no reminders will be sent. The galleys will only be proofread by the editorial staff of the publishing house and printed without the author's corrections. Should substantial changes in the original manuscript be requested, they will be made at the author's expense.

Fifty free reprints per contribution will be sent to the author indicated on the title page. An order form will accompany the proofs and should be returned to the publisher with the corrected proofs.

As soon as the article is published, the author is considered to have transferred his rights to the publisher. Requests for reproduction should be sent to the latter.
