About the journal

PHOTOSYNTHETICA publishes original scientific papers and brief communications, reviews on specialised topics, book reviews, and bibliographies of reviews and methodological papers, in all fields of photo-synthesis research. Photosynthetica publishes papers dealing with physiology and ecology of photosynthesis and the analysis of primary production, biochemistry and biophysics of photosynthesis, and the composition and structure of the photosynthetic apparatus, in English. Papers should not be published or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript (preferentially electronic version in MS-DOS or MS-DOS compatible format sent by e-mail, or electronic copy on a 3 ½ inch disk plus one printed copy sent by mail, or two printed copies sent by mail) and all correspondence should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. The preferred word-processing system are MS Word, MS Word for Windows, Word Perfect, and Word Star.
The address of Editor-in Chief is: Dr. Zden¨§k Šest¨¢k, Institute of Experimental Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, CZ-160 00 Praha 6, Na Karlovce 1a, Czech Republic. Phone: (+420) 233 331 032, fax: (+420) 224 310 113, e-mail:
photosynthetica@ueb.cas.cz or sestak@ueb.cas.cz.

Every manuscript is reviewed usually by two reviewers familiar with the relevant field of photosynthesis research, being from a different country from author. Papers accepted are published as soon as possible. The author receives 50 reprints of the paper free of charge.

ORIGINAL PAPERS

The length of a paper should not exceed 10 printed pages, including figures, tables, and references. The paper should be divided as follows:

      title
names and addresses of the author(s)
abstract (up to 20 typed lines)
      introduction
      materials and methods
      results
      discussion
      references

The tables (numbered and with a heading) and figure legends should be typed on separate sheets of paper and should be self-explanatory without reference to text. Units, dimensions, terms, symbols, abbreviations, etc., recommended by the Syst¨¨me International d'Unit¨¦s (SI) should be used (see the section SI units and symbols). (Consult the manuals of Socrates and Sapper 1969, and Šest¨¢k et al. 1971 and the paper of Salisbury 1991-see the references below.) Manuscripts should be typed double spaced throughout, i.e., including footnotes, figure captions, tables, and references. Any suggestions as to size or kind of print should be noted on the margin of the sheet in pencil (not by underlining words).

Text figures should be prepared electronically (the preffered graphic systems are TIF, PCX and JPG) or drawn in Indian ink and should be surrounded by a frame that forms their axes (see the Examples of figure design). Grid marks should point inwards. Alongside the scale of the ordinate and abscissa the quantity measured should be given, followed by appropriate units or dimensions, e.g.: Net photosynthetic rate [mg(CO2) m-2 s-1]. As far as possible, different curves should be individually labelled. Photographs must be of the highest quality with a full range of tones and of good contrast. References in the text should contain the authors' names followed by the year of publication, e.g. Amesz (1989) or (Pokorný et al. 1989, Herbert and Nilson 1991). References at the end of the paper should be arranged alphabetically (by authors' names) as follows (for abbreviations of journal titles see the section Most common abbreviations):

Socrates, G., Sapper, L.J.: SI and Metrication Conver-sion Tables. - Newnes-Butterworths, London 1969.

Titles of articles (not books) written in languages other than English, French, or German are given only in English translation - see the above example. For other details consult recent issues of Photosynthetica.

BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS

Manuscript not longer than 100 typed lines of text [including title, abstract in English (usually one sentence only), text without subdivision, references] plus maximum of one table and one figure or two figures or two tables are published more rapidly than the longer papers.

REVIEWS ON SPECIALIZED TOPICS IN PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

Short but comprehensive reviews with full bibliography are accepted after preliminary discussion of the intended topics with the editors.

BOOK REVIEWS

Reviews of new books (usually up to 60 typed lines) dealing in full or part with any field of photosynthesis, sent to the Editor, are published as soon as possible.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF REVIEWS AND METHODOLOGICAL PAPERS

This regular section contains a full bibliography of new reviews on photosynthesis and of new papers dealing with methods applicable in photosynthesis research. To help compilation, the authors of relevant papers are asked to send reprints to the Editor.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REPORTS

Photosynthetica publishes short announcements and reports of conferences, symposia, etc. in all fields of photosynthesis research.
