About the journal

Aims & Scope

Chemistry and Ecology publishes original papers, short communications and occasional review articles on the relationship between chemistry and ecological processes. The journal will reflect the fact that chemical form and state, as well as other basic properties, are critical in their influence on biological systems and that understanding of the routes and dynamics of the transfer of materials through atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic systems, and the associated effects, calls for an integrated treatment. Chemistry and Ecology will help to promote the ecological assessment of changing chemical environment and in the development of a better understanding of ecological functions.

Chemistry and Ecology encourages multi-disciplinary approaches dealing with:

  1. Environmental pollution: distribution, fate and ecological implications of pollutants including nutrients and key elements, in the atmospheric, soil and aquatic environments.
  2. Ecotoxicology: responses to toxic agents at community, species, tissue, cellular and sub-cellular level, including aspects of uptake, metabolism and excretion of toxicants.
  3. Environmental bioremediation and biotechnology: laboratory and field research on the identification, evaluation and use of biological/biotechnological items and supporting physical treatments for the restoration of contaminated soil and aquatic environments; laboratory and field research on microbial, plant or animal fouling and its monitoring and their treatment;
  4. Biogeochemical cycles: biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with special emphasis on the potential effects of pollutants.

All published research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two expert referees.

1. Introduction

It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. Failure to follow them may result in your paper being delayed and the effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.

Types of Contributions
Research papers: exciting findings fitting in the aims and scope of the journal. Priority will be given to well focused interdisciplinary manuscripts. Long manuscripts are also considered.

Review articles: state-of-art evaluations on defined research areas of general interest within the scope of the journal.

Short notes: are short communications (generally less than 7 printed pages and include no more than 4 tables or figures). Notes carry no more than 20 reference citations and do not require a separation between Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion

Ideas: very short (less than 4 printed pages) essays expressing novel ideas or correspondence with respect to previous work.

Book reviews: reviews and comments no recently published books in the fields of Chemistry and Ecology.

2. Submitting a Paper to Chemistry and Ecology

Papers for consideration should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at the address below:

Prof. Roberto Danovaro
Institute of Marine Science
University of Ancona
Via Brecce Bianche
60131 Ancona
Italy
Email: r.danovaro@univpm.it

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts electronically. Electronic submissions should be sent as email attachments using a standard word processing program, such as MSWORD or PDF. If email submission is not possible, please send an electronic version on disk along with three paper copies together with one set of high quality figures for reproduction.

When the accepted paper is submitted in final form, please send two paper copies and a copy on disk - see Electronic Processing.

Please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.

3. General Guidelines

Chemistry and Ecology considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Chemistry and Ecology, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Chemistry and Ecology incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Chemistry and Ecology must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees.

The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors who propose publishing figures in colour should consult Taylor & Francis to agree a financial contribution to additional colour reproduction costs. Figures which appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

Writing your paper

  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
  • Each paper should have three to six keywords. In addition to Keywords, authors are encouraged to provide three to six classification codes from the ACS classification system.
  • Papers are accepted only in English.
  • Manuscripts should be typed on single sides of good quality white A4 or 8 x 11 inch paper, double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (3 cm) margins.
  • All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of manuscripts.
  • Abstracts of no more than 200 words are required for all papers submitted and should precede the text of a paper - see Notes on Style.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual sheets); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
  • Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark authors must use the symbol ?or TM or alternatively a footnote can be inserted using the wording below:

This article includes a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark. Its inclusion does not imply it has acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other judgement implied concerning its legal status.
