The Journal of Environmental Psychology publishes original empirical and conceptual articles which advance understanding of the relationships between people and their physical surroundings. It covers theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of that understanding and seeks to foster the scientific development of this interdisciplinary field. The physical surroundings are taken to include the built and man-made environment as well as the natural environment. The objective of the Journal is to publish papers of ahigh academic standard which have the potential for increasing human wellbeing.

Submission Guidelines
Contributions must be typed in double spacing with wide margins and on one side only of each sheet. Sheets must be numbered. Four good copies of the manuscript should be submitted and a copy should be retained by the author. When supplying your Final Article (i.e. after all revisions have been made in accordance with reviewers comments) please also include a disk containing your manuscript prepared on PC-compatible or Apple Macintosh computers.

Tables should be typed in double spacing on separate sheets. Each should have a self-explanatory title and should be comprehensive without reference to the text.

Authors are encouraged to submit to JEP by email. For first submissions, please send a single file containing the entire manuscript in either Word, PDF or PostScript format. For revised submissions, please send a single file containing the entire manuscript in either PDF, Word or PostScript format, in addition to separate text, table and figure files in their original file format.

If a long title is necessary (more than 80 letter spaces), a short title should also be given as a running headline to the pages of the article.

Any acknowledgements should be set after the main text, before the references. Any footnotes will be set as endnotes before the references.

All articles should be preceded by an Abstract of between 100 to 200 words (less in the case of a short paper), giving a concise statement of the intention and results or conclusions of the article.

Illustrations are welcomed, in the form of Black and White photographs, line drawings etc. Wherever possible photographs or drawings of environment being studied should be included with the original manuscript. Each figure should have a self-explanatory legend which should be comprehensive without reference to the text. Provide all illustrations as high-quality printouts, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Clearly mark all illustrations on the back (or - in case of line drawings - on the lower front side) with the figure number and the author's name and, in cases of ambiguity, the correct orientation. Photographs are only acceptable if they have good contrast and intensity. Sharp and glossy copies are required.
Reproductions of photographs already printed cannot be accepted. Mark the appropriate position of a figure in the article.

Preparation of electronic illustrations
Submitting your artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail.

Files can be stored on 31/2 inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh).

Formats
Regardless of the application used, when your electronic artwork is finalised, please "save as" or convert the images to one of the following formats (Note the resolution requirements for line drawings, halftones, and line/halftone combinations given below.):
EPS: Vector drawings. Embed the font or save the text EPS as "graphics".
TIFF: Colour or greyscale photographs (halftones): always use a minimum of 300 dpi.
TIFF: Bitmapped line drawings: use a minimum of 1000 dpi.
TIFF: Combinations bitmapped line/half-tone (colour or greyscale): a minimum of 500 dpi is required.
DOC, XLS or PPT: If your electronic artwork is created in any of these Microsoft Office applications please supply "as is".

NOTE: The journal now accepts good quality black and white photographs (140 mm ' 130 mm) which may be used as cover illustrations. (Alternatively, good contrast colour photographs or slides are acceptable.) These should be relevant to the subject matter in general, and an appropriate caption should be provided.

Please do not:
* Supply embedded graphics in your wordprocessor (spreadsheet, presentation) document;
* Supply files that are optimised for screen use (like GIF, BMP, PICT, WPG); the resolution is too low;
* Supply files that are too low in resolution;
* Submit graphics that are disproportionately large for the content.

Colour Reproduction Submit colour illustrations as original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35mm slides. Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to 'grey scale' (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

References
Bibliographical references should be cited in the text by giving the last name of the author (or authors) followed by the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Gray (1998). Gray and Regan (1998) or (Gray & Regan, 1998). If there are three or more authors, citations should read Brandstatter, Koulen, and Wassle (1997), first citation; Brandstatter et al. (1997), second citation. If there is more than one work by an author (or authors) in a given year, then they should be labelled alphabetically within each year (e.g. Gray, 1998a,b).

The full references should be typed on a separate page and placed at the end of the article. They should not be given as footnotes. References should include the names of all the authors and their initials, the year of publication, the full title of the article or book, name of the journal, the volume number and the pages. For books, the city of publication and the publisher should be given. The following may serve as illustrations:

Unpublished work, work in press or conference proceedings should be cited only exceptionally, and preprints must accompany the paper if they are essential to its argument.

Measurements
Measurements should be in units of the International System adopted by the General Conference of Weights and Measures.

Review Process
Manuscripts, including occasional solicited contributions, are normally reviewed on the advice of two independent referees. Blind review is undertaken and consequently the author should remove all identifying material from the manuscript. Empirical papers are normally sent for review to three internationally recognised experts. Other submissions are usually reviewed by members of the Editorial Board.

Every attempt is made to provide authors with a response on conditions for acceptance, or a rejection, of the submission within two months of its initial receipt of the managing Editor.

It is the policy of The Journal of Environmental Psychology to publish within the subsequent twelve months, if revisions are returned within two months of receipt of the editor's comments.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by e-mail. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all inclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete. Should you choose to mail your corrections, please return to: Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.

Reprints
Reprints may be obtained at a reasonable cost, provided that they are ordered when the proofs are returned and using the reprint order form which will accompany the author's proofs.

Copyright
All authors must sign the 'Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see http://authors.elsevier.com).

This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided. If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact ELSEVIER, Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Enquiries. Authors can keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway http://authors.elsevier.com. For privacy, information on each article is password-protected. The author should key in the "Our Reference" code (which is in the letter of acknowledgement sent by the publisher on receipt of the accepted article) and the name of the corresponding author. In case of problems or questions, authors may contact the Author Service Department, E-mail: authorsupport@elsevier.com.
