Instructions to Authors

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
On February 15, 2002 Current Eye Research launched Manuscript Central Ophthalmology, its online peer review system. All authors are now requested to submit their manuscript online. At the bottom of this page a link is provided to the online system.

Please read these instructions carefully before submission and follow them strictly to ensure that the review and publication of your paper is as efficient and quick as possible. The Editorial Office reserves the right to return manuscripts that are not in accordance with these instructions. If a considerable amount of language revision is required, the Publisher will have to charge authors the additional costs.
Language, Structure, and References

  • Manuscripts should meet high academic standards. Contributors need to remember that they are writing for an international audience. National colloquialisms and idiomatic use of language should be avoided and gender neutral language used.
  • Before submitting you paper check and improve where necessary consistency of spelling, punctuation and use of abbreviations.
  • It is a requirement of the journal for authors not fluent in English to have their manuscript professionally edited for correct us of language before submission.
Structure

Article types

Minireviews are accepted for publication only if they have been invited by the Editors. Authors who would like to submit a minireview on a topic in which they have expertise are asked to communicate their interest to the Editors. Invited minireviews are subjected to the same peer review process as are original research papers. The journal accepts letters (not to exceed 750 words) concerning articles already published in Current Eye Research. Announcements of forthcoming meetings, courses, etc. may be published.

Title page

The title page should carry the title, the authors' names and affiliations and current addresses. In the case of a long title, an abbreviated version of no more than 40 characters (including spaces) should be supplied by the author for running heads.

Abstracts

The manuscript should be accompanied by an abstract not exceeding 150 words. Current Eye Research publishes abstracts using the structured format. The abstract should therefore be divided into sections with the following headings:
  • Purpose
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions
Keywords

Up to five key words, which may or may not appear in the title, should be given in alphabetical order, on the title page, each separated by a semicolon (;). In addition to being printed in the article these key words form the sole basis of the annual Subject Index. Thus please give them careful consideration.

Text

The text should be divided into the following sections:
  • Introduction
  • Materials and methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Acknowledgments
  • References
Not more than three levels of heading should be used: capitals, bold l.c., italics l.c.

Acknowledgments

These should be included at the end of the text and before the references.

References

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in superscript. References cited only in tables or in legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure. List all authors in the reference section; with 3 or more authors the reference should be mentioned as follows in the body text: Reed et al. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus , published annually as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus. The list can also be obtained through the library's Web site (http://www.nlm.nih.gov). References to papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as "in press" or "forthcoming"; authors should obtain written permission to cite such papers as well as verification that they have been accepted for publication. Information from manuscripts submitted but not accepted should be cited in the text as "unpublished observations" with written permission from the source. Avoid citing a personal communication unless it provides essential information not available from a public source, in which case the name of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. For scientific articles, authors should obtain written permission and confirmation of accuracy from the source of a personal communication. The references must be verified by the author against the original documents.

Illustrations, figures and tables

  • Digital files of figures and illustrations should be stored with the "save as" option of your editing program in .EPS or .TIF format. Formats such as JPEG, GIF, PCX, Pict and WMF are not acceptable for further processing. When a .TIF or .EPS file is not available submit high quality hardcopy.
  • Grayscale images should be saved or scanned with a resolution of 800 dpi (dots per inch), whereas photographic images should be stored with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
  • In line graphics, lines should not be thinner than 0.25 pt.
  • Line drawings should be large enough to permit reduction to the specific journal size without affecting legibility. If scans of line drawing are submitted, please scan at 150 lpi (lines per inch) or 300 dpi.
  • Submit your figures in the original program they were made in and submit them separately from the text files. Do not embed them in the text file of your manuscript.
  • In-fill patterns and screens should have a density of at least 10%. Please avoid shading or elements filled with patterns in the figures as much as possible. If shading is necessary, please note that the shade will darken considerably when reducing the figure. Different types of shading must, therefore, be very distinct.
  • Freehand or typewritten lettering is not acceptable.
  • Use a compression program such as Winzip or Stuffit when submitting figures as an e-mail attachment.
  • Tables (including headings and notes), figures and figure legends must be presented on separate pages.
  • · Tables and figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals. The approximate position of figures and tables should be clearly indicated in the text. All tables and figures to be placed in the text should be referred to in the body text.
  • The costs of coloured illustrations and halftones is $ 1000,-- per page and must be met in full by the author(s). Prepayment is required and estimates can be obtained at the time of submission of the manuscript for review.

Copyright and permissions

It is a condition of publication in this Journal that authors assign copyright to Swets & Zeitlinger Publishers. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that this Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication. Therefore the Manuscript should be accompanied by a signed Consent to Publish and Transfer of Copyright form Please note that your manuscript can only be taken into production once the signed form has been received. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of illustrations or tables from unpublished or copyright material. Submission of a paper to this Journal implies that it has not been published before and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

The Editors and the Publisher of Current Eye Research are not responsible for the scientific content and statements of the authors of accepted papers.

Submission of manuscripts
  • Submit your article in a frequently used word processing package under operating systems MS Dos, Windows or Apple Macintosh. Do not submit your article in ASCII , Postscript or Works.
  • Name files using Dos conventions (8 characters, dot, 3 characters). For example: figure1.eps
  • Make sure that the correct version of the manuscript is submitted for processing (original, revision, final manuscript). Please note that the manuscript file should include titlepage and abstracts.
  • Always retain a backup copy of your manuscript (both digital and on hardcopy).
  • Please note that the manuscript has only been submitted once the message 'successful submission confirmation' appears.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a letter of submission containing a statement that the manuscript reports unpublished work that is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. If the manuscript describes drugs or other chemical agents, devices, or techniques in which one or more authors have a financial interest, this must be stated in the cover letter. Authors who wish to publish color illustrations must state in their covering letter their willingness to assume the charge of $1000 per page.

Human and animal experiments
The Editors draw the authors' attention to the Declaration of Helsinki and The Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals (DHEW Publication, NIH 80-23). These are reproduced in detail in Vol. 15 no. 1. The Editors reserve the right not to accept papers unless adherence to the principles embodied in these documents is apparent. A statement to the effect that these principles have been adhered to must be included in the 'materials and methods' section of the manuscript.

All communication regarding the manuscript will be done by e-mail. An e-mail address of the corresponding author is therefore mandatory for all submissions.

Please note that you will be able to upload your manuscript in Manuscript Central Ophthalmology in one of the following formats: .txt, .html, .rtf, .ps, or .pdf. Save a copy of the original word processing and graphics files from your manuscript on your own computer. You will need them when you revise your manuscript and will be asked to submit these files for production if your manuscript is accepted. For reviewing purposes only, the Editorial Office accepts low resolution images. Please note though that, once a manuscript is accepted, .TIF or .EPS files should be submitted (see instructions regarding illustrations).

Authors who are unable to submit a full electronic copy of their manuscript online are requested to contact the Editorial Office at submissions@swets.nl
