Instructions to Authors
- The Editors welcome submission of manuscripts. By submission of a manuscript , an author certifies that the work is original, has not previously been published, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all the authors. All Manuscripts are subject to anonymous peer review.
- Articles should fall within the range of 4000 to 7000 words. Contributions to the Policy Review section should normally be 2000 to 3000 words (but with the prior agreement of the Policy Review Editor may be as long as 4000 to 5000 words).
- Four copies must be submitted to Roger Burrows and Janet Ford, Editors, Housing Studies, Centre for Housing Policy, University of York, Heslington, York YO10 5DD, UK. Tel: +44 (0)1904 433691. Fax: +44 (0)1904 432318. Email: housing-studies@york.ac.uk. Contributions must be in English, typed double spaced, using one side of the paper only, with a margin on all sides. Manuscripts will not be returned.
- In order to facilitate the anonymous refereeing process, the author's details - full name, institutional, affiliation, mailing address, telephone, fax, and e-mail-must be provided on the title page only. The manuscript should start on page 2 and should repeat the title of the article but exclude the author's name and address. A short abstract of about 150 words should follow the title and precede the introduction. The abstract should be clear and informative, giving an indication of the scope of the paper and a summary of the results. The abstract should be followed by three key words which best indicate the content of the article. Any acknowledgements should be given at the end of the article. Measurements should be given in metric units.
- Authors should send the revised, final version of their articles in both paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the paper version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy of the disk you are sending. Submit two printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5-inch high-density disk. Disks using Microsoft Word in a PC format are preferred, but most other common word processing programs, including Apple Macintosh format, can be accepted. Please specify which program and format is being used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only". Files should be checked to remove any computer viruses.
- Tables and figures should not be inserted in the text but gathered together at the end. Refer to all tables as Tables, which should be numbered consecutively. Refer to all other illustrations (maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, etc.) as Figures, also numbered consecutively. Tables and figures should include short, informative captions; all captions should be gathered onto a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript.
- Contributions should conform exactly to the Housing Studies style. Authors should check the format of their own manuscript with that of a recent issue of the journal, paying particular attention to references, tables and figures.
- References should be cited in the text by giving the last name of the author(s) followed by the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith & Jones (1990); (Smith, 1992a, 1992b). For three or more authors, use the first author followed by et al.
- The full reference list must be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. References should include all authors' names and initials, year of publication, title of article or book, the full title of the journal, volume and page numbers and, for books and other documents, the publisher's name and place of publication. For example:

Karn, V. & Wolman, H. (1992) Comparing Housing Systems (Oxford, Clarendon Press).
Kennett, P. (1998) Differentiated citizenship and housing experience, in: A. Marsh & D. Mullins (Eds) Housing and Public Policy (Buckingham, Open University Press).
- Endnotes are not normally permitted and should be avoided if at all possible. All relevant information apart from references should be incorporated into the main text.
- All contributions to the journal should use gender-neutral language. They should be written in clear and concise English. Authors should clarify the meaning or role of terms, institutions, and other material that may not be familiar to readers from countries other than their own.
- Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
- Book reviews should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only. Only one copy need be submitted, together with an electronic version. The heading should include the title, author, origin, publisher, date, number of pages, and price, as in the following example:
Housing Policy, Jean Conway, Eastbourne, Gildredge Press, 1999, 176pp, ?.99.
- It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables full copyright protection and ensures dissemination to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats. Authors may use the article elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to use copyright material from other sources.
