About the journal

The Journal of Social Work Practice publishes high quality refereed articles devoted to the exploration and analysis of practice in social welfare and allied health professions from psychodynamic and systemic perspectives. This includes counselling, social care planning, education and training, research, institutional life, management and organisation or policy-making. Articles are also welcome that critically examine the psychodynamic tradition in the light of other theoretical orientations or explanatory systems. The Journal of Social Work Practice is committed to a policy of equal opportunities and actively strives to foster all forms of intercultural dialogue and debate. The journal thus aims to:

  • provide a unique forum for the application of current understandings of unconscious processes to social work practice with individuals, couples, families and communities;
  • relate these ideas to institutional life and social policy formation
  • link the psychodynamic tradition with other theoretical orientations
  • foster intercultural dialogue and debate.

In future the journal will publish a broader scope of material, to include shorter commentaries, conference reports, items addressing professional debates and material which reflects on the social and political context of practice. The core of the journal will continue to be high-quality refereed articles devoted to the exploration and analysis of social work practice themes from psychodynamic and systemic perspectives.

The new Editors would like to to encourage shorter items for publication as well as longer articles conforming to the existing style and would be pleased to discuss proposals or 'early ideas' with potential contributors.

Group for the Advancement of Psychodynamics and Psychotherapy in Social Work (GAPS), the owner of Journal of Social Work Practice, exists to promote good practice in all social work agencies. GAPS runs conferences, seminars and local groups and is run on a voluntary basis. For further details and membership enquiries, please contact: Secretary, Jude Toasland, NSPCC, 28 Addiscombe Grove, Croydon CR0 5LP.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts should be sent to: Stephen Briggs, Tavistock Clinic, 120 Belsize Lane, London NW3 5BA, UK or Email sbriggs@tavi-port.nhs.uk and send a copy to Simone Silverstein at ssilverstein@tavi-port.nhs.uk. Papers can be considered only if three complete copies not exceeding 5000 words are submitted, and all submissions will be sent anonymously for the observations of referees. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins of at least one inch and the approximate number of words should be stated. The first sheet should include the title of the paper, name(s) of author(s) and for each author academic and/or professional qualifications as commonly used by the author, main appointment and address. The second page should repeat the title, and contain a summary of not more than 200 words. Where English is not the language in which the article is first written, a further summary should be provided in the author's first language. The third page should repeat the title as the heading to the start of the main text of the paper. All pages should be numbered. Proofs for checking will normally be sent to the first author named to whom any correspondence and offprints will also be addressed. Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Papers will be considered providing that they are not submitted simultaneously elsewhere for publication.

References should follow the Harvard system, i.e. they should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's names, with the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith (1984); or if there are more than two authors, Smith et al. (1984). If several papers from the same author(s) and from the same year are cited, (a), (b), (c), etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full alphabetically at the end of the paper on a separate sheet in the following standard form:

DONALDSON, M. (1976) Development of conceptualism in: V. HAMILTON & M. D. VERNON (Eds) The Development of Cognitive Processes, pp. 277-303 (London, Academic Press).
GAGNE, R. M. (1977) The Conditions of Learning (New York, Holt, Rinehart & Winston).
HERRIOT, P. (1970) An Introduction to the Psychology of Language (London, Methuen).
MAGUIRE, P. (1984) The way we teach: interviewing skills, Medical Teacher, 6, pp. 128-133.
Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.

Illustrations should not be inserted in the text but each provided separately and numbered on the back with Figure numbers, title of paper and name. Three copies of all figures must be submitted. All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as Figures and should be numbered consecutively in the text in Arabic numerals (e.g. Fig. 3). A list of captions for the figures should be submitted on a separate sheet and should make interpretation possible without reference to the text. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Tables should be typed on separate sheets and should be given Arabic numbers (e.g. Table 3). Their approximate position in the text should be indicated. Units should appear in parentheses in the column heading but not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines; 'ditto' or 'do' should not be used.

Proofs will be sent to the author if there is sufficient time to do so. Proofs including proofs of illustrations are supplied for checking and making essential corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs should be corrected and returned within 3 days of receipt.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in GAPS. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Carfax, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Carfax is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorized.
