Instructions to Authors

European Journal of Teacher Education (EJTE) welcomes articles of between 5000 and 6000 words on subjects of interest to an international audience of teacher educators. EJTE provides an opportunity for the dissemination of educational research which investigates theory, policy and practice in teacher education at pre-service and in-service levels predominantly in the countries of Europe. Relevant articles from other countries will be considered.

Articles may be written in English, French, German or Spanish. All articles should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 150 words and 3 to 5 relevant keywords. Abstracts should be provided in English and, where applicable, in the language of the article if not English. All pages should be numbered and footnotes avoided if possible.

Articles may be reports of empirical research conducted by the author(s) or discussions of current issues of international interest in relation to teacher education. Where articles report research the methodology should be clearly described and the ethical issues acknowledged.

Literature cited should be up to date and relevant. Tables where provided should be numbered and names and inserted at the end of the text, with clear guidelines in the text as to where the tables should be inserted.

According to the editorial policy approved by the General Assembly of the ATEE (Lisbon, 1993 and Leipzig, 1999), papers presented within the framework of ATEE scientific seminars, and those produced within ATEE Research and Development Centres, will be welcome, as will unsolicited manuscripts.

All submissions, including book reviews, should be made online at the European Journal of Teacher Education Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review

Click here to see the criteria used in the evaluation of articles submitted for consideration for publication.

Anyone wishing to review one of the books on the list should contact the Deputy Editor, Geri Smyth, via email g.smyth@strath.ac.uk and request a review copy.  Reviews should be around 1000 words in length and should refer to the significance of the text for teacher educators and for an international audience.  A date for submitting reviews will be negotiable with the Deputy Editor.  Anyone who has a book they wish to review or who wishes their own publication to be reviewed should also contact Geri. Click here for further information on the books available for reviewing.

Electronic Processing

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.
