About the journal

The Journal of Applied Toxicology is devoted to publishing original research, theoretical and literature reviews relating to the toxicity of drugs and chemicals to living systems at the molecular, cellular, tissue and target organ level. This also encompasses teratogenesis, carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, mechanistic technology, pharmacokinetics, environmental toxicology and environmental health (including epidemiological studies) in addition to analytical and method development studies. Papers dealing with in vitro techniques and alternatives to the use of animals are encouraged. Experiments on animals should conform to prevailing national or international standards of welfare, care and handling of animals (eg, NUH guidelines). Investigations in human volunteers and patients must indicate that relevant ethical reviews and guidelines have been followed including obtaining informed consent.

Papers must be of clear scientific value and contribute to knowledge and advancement in toxicology. All papers will be independently refereed. Contributions must be in English and not have been published elsewhere except as abstracts at scientific meetings. Review articles will be published and prior consultation with one of the editors is reommended. Review articles will also be refereed. Authors must agree not to communicate the same material for publication elsewhere

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Electronic submission

The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style

The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

  • The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply an abstract of up to 250 words for all articles except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to 10 keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
  • Authors should conform to nomenclature, symbols and abbreviations given in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals prepared by the International Steering Committee of Medical Editors. Reprints of this document are available form the Editor, Annals of Internal Medicine.
  • The Experimental section must be precise and give all details necessary for repeating the work. Accurate and detailed descriptions must be given of the methods used. Particular attention should be given to chemicals and reagents used (supply, constitution, purity, etc) and to full descriptions of animals and their housing and environmental conditions (strain, supply, weight, caging including size and numbers per cage, ambient temperature, humidity, lighting regime, and food and water supplies). Similar detail should be provided for ex vivo and in vitro studies including derivation of tissue and cell lines, incubation and treatment procedures. However, procedures described fully elsewhere, can be referred to by reference only.
  • Short communications should not exceed one printed page in length, including a short abstract.
  • Toxicology updates. This section covers particular substances, reviewing the recent pertinent information about the effects of acute and chronic exposure. Both clinical and analytical aspects of the substances will be outlined. Authors wishing to submit toxicology updates should consult Harry Salem to obtain special submission instructions.
  • The editors invite correspondence to be published, at their discretion.

Reference Style

References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets, and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate and must use Index Medicus journal abbreviations for links to MEDLINE. To check for correct abbreviations please see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi.. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Illustrations

Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure that the top of the figure is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies); tints should be avoided. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing. The artwork must be sized to the text width of 84mm to fit a single column and 177mm to fit a double column.

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright

To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of the Journal of Applied Toxicology. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further Information

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five (25) complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors
