About the journal

Social Dynamics

Social Dynamics is the journal of the Centre for African Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. It has been published since 1975, and is committed to advancing interdisciplinary academic research, fostering debate and addressing current issues pertaining to the African continent. Articles cover the full range of humanities and social sciences including anthropology, archaeology, economics, education, history, literary and language studies, music, politics, psychology and sociology.

Social Dynamics is a peer-reviewed journal that runs themed symposia and publishes general papers across three issues per year. Articles appearing in Social Dynamics are indexed in the Social Science Citation Index and other abstracting and indexing services. The journal is edited by three academics and has received international recognition as a leading Africanist publication.

Instructions to Authors

1. Submissions should not have already appeared in print, nor should they be under consideration elsewhere. If parts of the article have appeared elsewhere, but have been significantly reframed, they should not be reproduced in whole or in substantial part without permission from Social Dynamics . Please contact the editors if you have any queries in this regard.

2.  Social Dynamics uses the Chicago Author-Date style. All submissions should conform strictly to the guidelines supplied in these notes and in the style guide. Articles that do not conform to our house style will be returned to the authors.

Please use British spelling (e.g. colour, organise) but US punctuation. Use double quotation marks with single within if needed.
This journal requires a short paragraph of biographical details for all contributors.

3.  All articles should adhere to a word limit of 5,00 up to a maximum of 8,000 words, including all notes and references. Please indicate the word count on the cover page of your submission. Under special circumstances longer papers will be considered; approach the editors if you have queries in this regard. Reviews should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words, and review essays 1,500-3,000 words, unless otherwise agreed upon with the editors. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here .
 
4.  All submissions should be accompanied by a cover page that includes the title of the article and the author’name and contact details (postal address, email, telephone and fax). Please ensure you remove to this cover page any endnotes or acknowledgements that may reveal your identity. The article can then be sent to our readers for anonymous review. Please supply also on the cover page the email address and institutional affiliation that will be printed on the first page of published article (if there is more than one author, please identify the corresponding author).

5.  Please supply a biographical note of about 50 words on your cover page (which will be moved to the end of the article following review). The note should include such relevant information as your affiliations, academic history, previous publications and research interests.

6.  Please supply on the cover page three to six keywords for your article.

7.  An abstract of up to 200 words must be included. This should summarise the argument and findings; it is not a list of contents.

8. Section headings and sub-headings should be clearly indicated by the use of bold typeface (section headings) and italics (section subheadings) respectively.

9. Endnotes should appear at the end of the article or review and before the bibliography. They should be indicated by numerals embedded in the text (i.e. automatic endnote formatting in MS Word). Endnotes are for explanation and comment, or to refer to the reader to additional entries in the bibliography, but should not be used to supply references to in text citations.

10. Paragraphing: indent the first line of new paragraphs.

11. Quotations in the text should have single inverted commas (with quotations within quotations identified by double inverted commas). Quotations longer than 40 words should be indented. Interpolations into or changes to quotations, and ellipses that have been inserted into quotations, should be indicated by square brackets.

12 . Provide translations of all material in languages other than English. Translations should be incorporated into the text, following the relevant term or passage.

13. Page proofs: Authors will receive email notification from the publishers when their proofs can be downloaded for checking, provided there is sufficient time. These must be corrected immediately and returned. Only printer’errors should be corrected; major changes or corrections are not acceptable.

14. Complimentary copy: all contributors of articles and essays will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which their article or essay appears.

15. Free online access: all authors will receive free online access to their article through Taylor & Francis Online, an electronic offprint and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in Social Dynamics can be purchased through Rightslink when proofs are received or alternatively on our journals website. 16. Copyright: To assure the integrity, dissemination, and protection against copyright infringement of published articles, you will be asked to assign us, via a Publishing Agreement, the copyright in your article. Your Article is defined as the final, definitive, and citable Version of Record, and includes: (a) the accepted manuscript in its final form, including the abstract, text, bibliography, and all accompanying tables, illustrations, data; and (b) any supplemental material hosted by Taylor & Francis.
