  • the epidemiology and pathology of fetal abnormality (including fetal infection)
  • fetal and maternal factors relating to intrauterine development
  • antenatal care in relation to the prevention of fetal abnormality
  • genetic counselling and selective termination of pregnancy
  • psychosocial aspects of prenatal diagnosis
  • the development and evaluation of services for prenatal diagnosis
  • all aspects of fetal imaging, including ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging
  • developments in the field of amniocentesis, chorion villus sampling, fetoscopy, and fetal blood and tissue sampling
  • medical and surgical treatment of fetal disorders
  • developments in genetic linkage and DNA analysis for the diagnosis of gene mutations
  • diagnosis of metabolic defects from chorion villus samples and amniotic fluid
  • advances in amniotic cell culture and cytogenetic techniques
  • pre-implantation diagnosis
  • first-trimester maternal serum screening and early amniocentesis
  • multicolour fluorescence in situ analysis for aneuploidy detection in interphase

Preimplantation Genetics and Diagnosis should submit original research and review articles to:

PG&D SECTION EDITOR, EUROPE

Joyce Harper, PhD, UCL Centre for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University College London, 86-96 Chenies Mews, London WC1E 6HX, UK, Fax: 44(20) 7383 7429, e-mail: joyce.harper@ucl.ac.uk

UNITED STATES

Eugene Pergament, MD, PhD, Northwestern University Medical School, 333 East Superior Street, Chicago, IL, USA, Fax: 1(312) 908-0806, e-mail: epergame@nmh.org

Review Articles and Invited Commentaries will be considered following invitation by the Editor-in-Chief, Editors or Invited Commentary Editors.

Authors must also supply:

  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this, we are unable to accept the submission.
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
  • A signed consent or statement to this effect, if photographs or any other identifiable data are included. Whenever possible, the consent should refer to use of the data at restricted-access sites on the Internet. A Patient Consent Form may be obtained from the Publisher. It is also good practice to indicate in the figure legend or article that such consent has been obtained. Actual patient names or initials must not be used in the manuscript. If applicable, the editorial office should also receive assurance that the work performed on human subjects complies with human studies guidelines and standards which apply to their institution and country.
  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. It is the responsibility of the authors to advise the Editors of any circumstances which might pose a conflict of interest, whether by personal or commercial affiliation, directly or through immediate family, in such areas as expert testimony, consulting, honoraria, stock holdings, equity interests, ownership, patient-licensing situations, employment or academic competition. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Electronic submission

The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style

The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3 cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

  • The title page must list the full title, short title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply a structured abstract of up to 200 words for full articles and short communications. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. Structure abstracts using the following headings: Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusion. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to 3-5 key words that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
  • Brief reports of a special interest, published as Short Communications, should not exceed 2500 words.
  • Letters to the Editor are encouraged and may cover commentary on issues arising from recent articles, or for recording brief original observations. The Editors may send the letter to the authors of the original article in order to publish their comments at the same time.
  • Invited Commentaries and Letters to the Editor should not exceed 1500 words, including a maximum of 15 references.
  • Short, non-structured abstracts are required for Invited Commentaries and Reviews, but not for Letters to the Editor.

Reference style

References should be referred to in the text by name and year, and listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. Use Index Medicus abbreviations for journal names. They can be found at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Chitty LS, Pandya, PP. 1997. Ultrasound screening for fetal abnormalities in the first trimester. Prenat Diagn 17: 1269-1281.
Petrikovsky B M (ed). Fetal Disorders: Diagnosis and Management. New York: Wiley-Liss.
Baraitser M. 1997. Uses of databases in dysmorphology. In: Thorogood P (ed) Embryos, Genes and Birth Defects. Chichester: John Wiley & Sons; 89-99.

Illustrations

Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure that the top of the figure is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs - photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies); tints should be avoided. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Colour illustrations will be published at no cost to the author IF the colour is necessary for the biomedical meaning of the illustration (e.g. Doppler, FISH). Non-essential colour illustrations (e.g. a colour photograph of a fetus or specimen, or a sepia scan) will be accepted only if part of their costs are borne by the authors as before - £300 per page. These may be submitted as prints or transparencies. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright

To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Prenatal Diagnosis. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further Information

Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimize the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints of papers will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
