About the journal

 

Aims and Scope:

The Information Society is an international, refereed journal that publishes scholarly articles, position papers, short communications, and book reviews. The journal serves as a forum for thoughtful commentary about impacts, policies, systems concepts, and methodologies related to the rapidly emerging information society. Topics covered include:

  • the rise of virtual communities through worldwide many-to- many communication
  • cross-border data flows
  • fears of cultural imperialism and inundation
  • (inter)national information infrastructures
  • and implications of options for electronic democracy.

Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted in five copies to: Dr. Harmeet Sawhney, Editor, The Information Society, Department of Telecommunications, R-TV Center, 1229 E. 7th St., Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-5501, USA.

Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on disk. The disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors?names, file name, and software program. A hardcopy printout that exactly matches the disk must be supplied. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. All titles should be as brief as possible, 6 to 12 words. Authors should also supply a short version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more that 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text.

Include full names of authors, academic and/or other professional affiliations, and the complete mailing address of the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent on the title page.

Book Reviews

All book reviews are solicited. If you wish to be placed on the list of potential book reviewers, please send your qualifications and areas of specially to the book review editor: Chris Ferguson, The Information Society, Center for Social Informatics, School of Library and Information Science, 10th & Jordan, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, 47405-180, USA.

References

All references should be listed alphabetically at the end of every paper. In the text, references should be cited by author's last name, year of publication, and page in parentheses. For further information, consult the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed. Examples:

Journal:

Buchanan, Thomas. 1985. Commitment and Leisure Behavior: A Theoretical Perspective. Leisure Sciences 7(4):401-420.

Book:

Kelly, John R. 1982. Leisure. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice Hall, Inc.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1,200.00. Subsequent figures, totaling no more than 4 text pages, are $500.00 each. Good quality color prints should be provided in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25 percent. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend, and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.

Page Proofs

All proofs must be corrected and returned to the publisher within 48 hours of receipt. If the manuscript is not returned within the allotted time, the editor will proofread the article and it will be printed per his instruction. Only correction of typographical errors is permitted.

Offprints

An offprint order form will accompany proofs. It should be completed and returned with proofs. Corresponding authors will receive one complimentary copy of the issue.

Reprints

Each author of the article will receive a complete copy of the issue in which the article appears, up to a total of 3 copies per article. The corresponding author is responsible for distribution of copies to co- authors. Reprints of an individual article may be ordered from Taylor & Francis. Use the reprint order form included with page proofs.
