About the journal
The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a professional organization of more than 32,000 registered nurses and other healthcare providers dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, research, and administration in oncology nursing. The overall mission of ONS is to promote excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care.
Instructions to Authors
The Oncology Nursing Forum (ONF) publishes manuscripts that focus on nursing achievements in the field of oncology including, but not limited to, clinical advances, research findings, educational developments, administrative issues, and role and theory development.
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they are contributed solely to this journal, that the material is original, and the articles have not been published previously. If a work has multiple authors, the paper is reviewed on the assumption that all authors have granted approval for submission. All submitted papers are subject to blind peer review. Papers will be judged on the quality of the work and suitability for the audience.
The initial review process takes 4-6 weeks. Reviewers' typed comments are shared with the authors. Substantive revisions, when necessary, are done by authors based on feedback from the editor and the peer reviewers. Accepted manuscripts are subject to editorial revision for clarity, punctuation, grammar, syntax, and conformity to journal style. Authors will have an opportunity to review final manuscripts prior to publication. Queries should be sent directly to
ONF Editor Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson, MN, RN 27955 Trillium Lane, #62 Valencia, CA 91354 661-257-6932 (phone and fax) ONFEditor@ons.org
Manuscript Submission To submit a manuscript, go to http://onf.manuscriptcentral.com (or go to www.ons.org and link to online submission in the Library). Full instructions for this process are available at the site, and help also is available from Administrative Assistant Natalie Tooch at 412-859-6303 or pubONF@ons.org (e-mail). Receipt of all manuscripts submitted online will be acknowledged. Online submission requires that the primary or corresponding author represent all of the authors in answering questions about authorship and financial disclosure. In addition, each author must complete and sign an Author Understanding form transferring copyright of the article to the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), disclosing any financial interest in the manuscript, and, if appropriate, giving permission for ONS to provide an e-mail address for contact. This form transfers ownership of the material to ONS. In the event the manuscript is rejected or withdrawn from consideration by the author, copyright reverts to the author. The corresponding author must gather an Author's Understanding form from each coauthor and mail or fax the complete set within five days of manuscript submission to
Oncology Nursing Forum Attn: Natalie Tooch Publishing Division 125 Enterprise Drive, RIDC Park West Pittsburgh, PA 15275-1214 412-859-6163 (fax)

Authorship The corresponding author will be required to represent all of the authors when responding to this question: "Each of the indicated authors has participated sufficiently in the conception and design of this work, the data analysis (when applicable), and the writing of this manuscript to take public responsibility for it. Each of the authors has reviewed the final version of the submitted manuscript and approves it for publication."
Financial Disclosure Each author must disclose any financial interest in products mentioned in the manuscript or in the company that manufactures the products, as well as any compensation received for producing the manuscript. A submitted manuscript that is the result of funded research must cite the funding source on the title page. A manuscript that originated as a thesis or dissertation prepared by an author on an educational scholarship must cite the name of the scholarship. In general, this disclosure will not preclude publication in ONF providing that the manuscript meets the appropriate standards for acceptance. When appropriate, this information is shared with ONF reviewers and readers.
Manuscript Preparation Papers should be prepared using standard manuscript form according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th edition (2001). (Visit www.apastyle.org for assistance.) Length should be 12-15 pages (4,000 words), exclusive of tables, figures, and references.
Manuscripts should be computer generated, double spaced on 8? x 11" page size, with margins of at least 1" on all sides. Number the pages and enable line numbering. Most common file types are acceptable. Upload your entire document to the system following the instructions provided on Manuscript Central. If you have any difficulty with the process, assistance is available on Manuscript Central 24 hours a day or by contacting ONS Administrative Assistant Natalie Tooch at 412-859-6303 or pubONF@ons.org.
ONF is blind peer reviewed. Remove the author's name and all identifying information from all headers or footers. Once you submit your manuscript online, you will have an opportunity to review a file made from your original document and approve that file before officially submitting the manuscript for consideration. Keep the following in mind while creating your document.
- Title page: Titles should be brief, specific, and descriptive. Remove the names of all authors from the title page. This information is entered elsewhere in the system.
- Structured abstracts: An abstract is required for all articles. All abstracts must be double-spaced and can be written in phrases instead of complete sentences (e.g., "Setting: Rural health clinics in the southwestern United States," rather than "Setting: The study was conducted in rural health clinics located in the southwestern United States.").
- Research abstracts: Abstracts must be no more than 250 words. The following headings for reports of quantitative research must be included in the abstract. Variations for reports of qualitative research are in italics.
Purpose/Objectives: Clearly state the purpose(s) or key objectives of the study and the major hypotheses tested, if any. Design/Research Approach: Describe the basic study design (e.g., descriptive, experimental, survey), randomization, blinding, criterion standards, and temporal direction (e.g., prospective, retrospective). Describe the general research approach used (e.g., phenomenology, grounded theory, and theoretical foundation, if appropriate). Setting: Identify the study setting (e.g., primary or tertiary, private or institutional) and other characteristics (e.g., rural, urban, geographic area). Sample/Participants: Summarize characteristics of the sample (e.g., diagnosis, age range, sex, ethnicity), selection procedures, entry criteria, and number of participants entering and finishing the study. Describe the participants and the rationale for participant selection . Methods/Methodologic Approach: Describe interventions, data-gathering procedures, and instruments. Describe the methods for data collection (e.g., personal interview, telephone interview, participant observation), methods for determining saturation or rationale for termination of data collection and generation, methods for data analysis and synthesis (e.g., constant comparisons and immersion), and procedures to ensure scientific merit. Main Research Variables: Indicate the primary study variables as planned prior to data collection. Findings: Summarize the results of the study, including all significant findings. Present the major findings (e.g., themes, meaning in context, recurrent patterns). Conclusions: Describe conclusions supported by the data (avoid speculation and overgeneralization). Give equal emphasis to positive and negative findings. Implications for Nursing/Interpretation: Describe the specific clinical applications of the research, including educational and policy implications, if applicable. Describe the findings in light of disciplinary knowledge and discuss the value of the findings for practice, policy, research, and education.
- Abstracts for clinical, review, or theoretical papers: Abstracts must be no more than 150 words. The following headings mustbe included in the abstract:
Purpose/Objectives: State the purpose, key objectives, thesis, organizing construct, and scope (comprehensive or selective) of the review or paper. Data Sources: List all of the data sources (e.g., published articles and abstracts, conference proceedings, references from bibliographies of pertinent articles and books, computerized databases). Data Synthesis: State the main findings and how they relate to the purpose and objectives of the paper. Conclusions: Describe conclusions supported by the evidence reported (avoid speculation and overgeneralization). Implications for Nursing: State the specific clinical, research, educational, and policy applications of the findings.
- Key Points: Prepare three or four statements that cover main points readers should remember on the topic in general. Content of these points should not duplicate information in the abstract.
- Text: Use headings and subheadings as appropriate. Explain abbreviations on first mention. If specific drugs or products are included, use the generic name when possible. If you must use the trade name, use the register (?/SUP>) or trademark (? symbol on first reference in the text, and in parentheses include the manufacturer's name and location (city and state).
- Tables: Number tables consecutively. Each should be typed, double spaced on separate pages placed at the end of the text. Every table must be referred to in the text.
- Figures: Figures should be professionally drawn or computer generated. Every figure must be referred to in the text, appropriately titled, and included on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Figures prepared electronically should be submitted as high-resolution (300 dpi) jpg or tif files.
- Photographs: High-resolution (300 dpi) black-and-white or color photographs can be submitted electronically in most common file formats (i.e., jpg or tif files). Do not supply photographs in word-processing formats. If a high-resolution electronic file cannot be provided, the original photograph must be submitted via mail to Oncology Nursing Forum, Attn: Natalie Tooch, 125 Enterprise Drive, RIDC Park West, Pittsburgh, PA 15275-1214.
- References: The reference list (not a bibliography) must be typed and double spaced using APA format (in text and reference list). All references must be cited at least once in the text. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and correct formatting of all reference citations.
- Permissions: It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permissions from the author(s) and publisher for the use of any material (e.g., text, tables, figures, forms) previously published or printed elsewhere and to bear the cost, if any, of using the material. Original letters granting this permission must be mailed to the editor when the final manuscript is uploaded. If the manuscript reports the results of an investigational study involving human subjects, the text must include a statement indicating institutional review board approval and informed consent when appropriate. Both legal and ethical considerations require patients' anonymity; avoid the use of identifying information. Authors must obtain and forward a signed statement of informed consent to publish in print and online patient descriptions or case studies, photographs, and pedigrees from all individuals or parents or legal guardians of minors who can be identified in such written descriptions, photographs, or pedigrees. Such individuals should be shown the manuscript before its submission. Click here for a sample “request for permission?letter. The author is responsible for obtaining permission to include institutions' or colleagues' names.
- Acknowledgments: Any acknowledgments should be submitted with the final version of the manuscript following acceptance for publication.
Online Exclusives A small number of articles may be designated for online publication only. Decisions regarding online publication are made by the editor in consultation with the authors only after a manuscript has successfully completed peer review and been accepted for publication. Once designated as an online publication, articles are placed online in conjunction with a print issue of the journal. The print issue will list the article in the table of contents and include the title, abstract, and key points of the article along with information necessary to access it online. Access to online-only articles is unrestricted.
Features ONF features are not peer reviewed and will be submitted directly to the appropriate associate editor for consideration.
Clinical Challenges: This feature provides readers with a forum to discuss creative clinical solutions to challenging patient care problems. Case studies or problem descriptions may be submitted with or without discussion or solutions. References, tables, figures, or illustrations can be included. Materials or inquiries should be directed to the associate editor.
Leadership and Professional Development: This feature provides a platform for oncology nurses to illustrate the many and varied ways that leadership may be realized and professional practice may transform cancer care. Possible submissions include, but are not limited to, overviews of projects, interviews with nurse leaders, and accounts of the application of leadership principles or theories to practice. Descriptions of activities, projects, or action plans that are ongoing or completed are welcome. Manuscripts should clearly link the content to the impact on cancer care. Manuscripts should be six to eight double-spaced pages, exclusive of references and tables, and accompanied by a cover letter requesting consideration for this feature.
Continuing Education: Manuscripts are selected for Continuing Education credit by the editor. Authors will be asked to consent to the use of the manuscript for this feature. Preparation of test questions is the responsibility of ONF; however, authors will be given an opportunity to review and respond to the questions prior to publication.
Documentation: This feature provides an opportunity to share tools that have been used successfully in clinical practice to document various aspects of patient care (e.g., flow sheets, assessment forms, summary sheets). The tool must be accompanied by a two- to six- page narrative, a structured abstract, permission to print the tool, and references. The narrative should address the rationale for development of the tool described, the process of development and implementation, benefits of using the tool, special issues associated with its use, and evaluation results.
Patient Education: This feature highlights teaching tools (e.g., teaching booklets, cards, fact sheets) and programs and issues associated with patient, family, and public education relevant to cancer care, as well as innovative methods of delivering education. A manuscript accompanying a specific tool should identify the need for the tool and its purposes and objectives, developmental process, target population, reading level, and evaluation strategies.
Research Brief: Preliminary research, pilot studies, and studies with very small samples or negative results may be submitted in an abbreviated format. These brief reports of research should not exceed 1,500 words and may be accompanied by a maximum of two tables or figures. Include a structured abstract and key points. A maximum of 15 key references may be included.
Letters to the Editor Written (mail or e-mail) letters are encouraged and will be published at the discretion of the editor on a space-available basis. Letters should not be submitted via ONF's Manuscript Central online submission site. E-mail letters should be sent to ONFEditor@ons.org. Letters must be signed; however, on request, names can be withheld on publication. All letters are subject to editing to enhance clarity and accommodate space requirements.
Letters that question, criticize, or respond to a previously published article will be sent to the author of that article for a reply. This type of professional exchange is encouraged. Letters that question, criticize, or respond to an ONS policy, product, or activity should be directed to the ONS News and automatically will be sent to the ONS Board of Directors or to the appropriate ONS project team leader for a reply.
Policy Regarding Complimentary Copies Corresponding authors receive one complimentary copy of the issue in which their article appears for each of the authors. If the authors are ONS members, they also will receive a copy in the mail as part of their regular membership benefits. Authors interested in ordering professional copies of their article should send an e-mail to reprints@ons.org; those interested in permissions to photocopy their article should send an e-mail to pubpermissions@ons.org; those who would like to purchase additional copies of the full journal should contact Customer Service at customer.service@ons.org or call 866-257-4ONS (toll-free).
