About the journal

About us

Tecnología y Ciencias del Agua (Water Technology and Sciences), formerly Ingeniería Hidráulica en México (Hydraulic Engineering in Mexico), is a highly specialized journal with an

  •  interdisciplinary approach and
  •  an international scope of authors, editors, reviewers, and readers.

It is a descendant of the journal Ingeniería Hidráulica en México (Hydraulic Engineering in Mexico), published in its second series since 1985 by the Mexican Institute of Water Technology (IMTA), which in turn was the continuation of the journal Irrigación en México (Irrigation in Mexico) (1930-1947), Ingeniería Hidráulica en México (1972-1978), and Recursos hidráulicos (Water Resources (1972-1978).

The journal is geared towards researchers, academicians, specialists, and professionals interested in the analysis of, research in, and search for knowledge and solutions to water-related problems in the Spanish-speaking world.

Its contents are interdisciplinary in nature, with unpublished water-related articles and technical notes derived from research, that offer original scientific and technological contributions or innovations, within the fields of several disciplines, such as:

  • Water and energy.
  • Water quality.
  • Physical, biological, and chemical sciences.
  • Hydroagricultural sciences
  • Political and social science.
  • Scientific and technological development and innovation.
  • Water management.
  • Hydrology.
  • Hydraulics.

Its strict peer-review process establishes that each contribution be analyzed separately by at least three reviewers. Participating in this process are high-level experts, of renowned national and international prestige in their professional field, with the ability to evaluate both the quality and originality of contributions, as well as the degree of scientific and technological innovation of the material submitted for possible publication.

An average of almost 50% of its authors belong to foreign institutions, from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Greece, Italy, Peru, Portugal, Spain, The United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

It is included in several national and international indexes and abstracts, such as the Index of Mexican Scientific and Technological Research Journals of the National Council for Science and Technology, as well as the Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index® (ISI) and  Expanded Thomson Reuters Research Alert® (ISI).

The journal's Editorial Board is comprised by an editor in chief, several thematic editors, and a technical secretary; all of them from both national and international institutions. The Board's job is to make sure the journal maintains its standards of quality and excellence as a publication dedicated to the dissemination of water knowledge.

The Editorial Committee is comprised of prominent personalities of the world of science and technology in diverse fields of knowledge, both in Mexico and abroad. The committee is currently 67-member strong: 7 from IMTA, 16 from other Mexican institutions, 41 from institutions from 14 countries, and three independent consultants.

It is a quarterly journal sent

to different subscribers, universities, research institutions, and international organizations.

Mission Statement
To disseminate water-related knowledge and scientific and technological advancements through the publication of original and unpublished articles and technical notes.

Our principles

  • Impartiality.
  • Objectivity.
  • Honesty.

Our values

  • Knowledge.
  • Experience.
  • Thematic authority.

Content
The journal's content is interdisciplinary in nature, with unpublished water-related articles and technical notes derived from research, that offer original scientific and technological contributions or innovations, within the fields of several disciplines.

Thematic Scope
Interdisciplinary, water-related, giving priority to the following knowledge fields:

  • Water and energy.
  • Water quality.
  • Physical, biological, and chemical sciences.
  • Hydro-agricultural sciences.
  • Political and social science.
  • Scientific and technological development and innovation.
  • Water management.
  • Hydrology.
  • Hydraulics.

Types of Contributions
Technical article:
A scientific document describing for the first time the results of research or a successful innovation contributing to or increasing current knowledge on water-related topics.
Technical note: A text dealing with advances in hydraulic engineering and the professional practice in other water-related fields, which, while not necessarily an original contribution, must be previously unpublished material.

Some articles submitted to the peer-review process may end up being published as notes or vice-versa. This is done by proposal and with the mutual agreement of the author(s) and the appropriate thematic editor. Both have virtually the same structure (abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions, references).

Peer-review process
The journal carries out a rigorous peer-review process which demands that every paper be analyzed separately by at least three reviewers, who recommend its acceptance, its acceptance with minor changes, its acceptance with major changes, its rejection or its acceptance as a technical note with the appropriate changes.

It will be sought that at least one of every three reviewers belong to a foreign institution.

The reviewers cannot belong to the same institution as the authors submitting the article for publication.

In case of opposing or inconsistent judgements, the intervention of other reviewers or members of the Editorial Board can be solicited.

In exceptional cases, the approval or non-approval of an article will be decided on with the report of two reviewers, plus the opinion of the corresponding thematic editor or that of the editor in chief.

An article that has been rejected will not be admitted for a new peer-review process.

The peer-review process will be carried out in such a way that the authors and reviewers are blind to each other.

Participating in this process are high-level experts, of renowned national and international prestige in their professional field, with the ability to evaluate both the quality and originality of contributions, as well as the degree of scientific and technological innovation of the material submitted for possible publication.

This participation is considered a professional contribution, and is thus honorary.

Reviewers have a "Reviewers' guide" provided by the journal's Publishing Coordination.

Final judgement
The final judgement resulting from the peer-review process is indisputable.

Authors
Authors of any nationality may submit papers as long as they are in Spanish;  however, we also accept papers submitted in Spanish and English.

Responsibility of the authors
Submitting a paper to our journal entails the commitment of its author not to submit it simultaneously to another publication. If the case should arise that a paper has been submitted to another medium for publication, the author commits to notifying the Publishing Coordination, which will put the peer-review process on hold and will inform the Editorial Board about the decision taken by the author.

Collaborators whose papers have been accepted will formally cede copyrights of the articles over to Water Technology and Sciences.

The content of the articles is the sole responsibility of their authors.

The author is responsible for the quality of the Spanish used.  If the writing is poor, the contribution will be rejected. Water Technology and Sciences, formerly Ingeniería Hidráulica en México, will only proofread for style and minor spelling and punctuation mistakes.

The author agrees to make the adjustments indicated by the Editorial Board within the specified time; otherwise, the article in question will be withdrawn from the peer-review process and will be classified as rejected.

The author should be attentive to solve the doubts and proposals presented by the editors and the publishing coordinator.

Every author should validate the final printing proofs or his or her text.
